With July ending in a 10 comic wallet buster, August debuts with 6 comics, two of which being priced at $3.99 - which is about average for me. Overall it looks good, although ACTION COMICS and DEFENDERS can both be very hit-or-miss. JLI is ending with this issue, aside for the annual/0 issue or whatever. Some of the recent arcs on AVENGERS ACADEMY have been past their prime so there is pressure for Gage to deliver on this one, now that the crossover's over. His last Avengers title (AVENGERS: THE INITIATIVE, which he started co-writing after issue #7 and took on fully for it's last year and a half) ended with issue #35, albeit that was in early 2010 and it wasn't double-shipped. Still, this series is solicited through issue #38 and likely will see a 40th issue, which is impressive these days. NOVA by Abnett & Lanning ended after 36 issues, after all.

HAWEYE is a definite "maybe". The highlights include an archer legacy with Clint and Kate, which makes sense and is one of the rare examples I can think of for a Marvel hero to actually and deliberately take on a young hero under their wing. Sure, Spider-Man is about to do that but he never did that for Spider-Kid/Steel Spider or Arana/Spider-Girl. Aside for an occasional visit neither Steve Rogers nor James Barnes have much to do with Patriot. Virtually nothing has been done with Hulkling being Mar-Vell's latest retcon son. The other highlight is David Aja art, although expecting him to draw more than 4 issues without aid is a tall order. He drew a lot of the Fraction/Brubaker run on IMMORTAL IRON FIST, but he also had a lot of help including a ton of flashback scenes by different artists to deliberately lower his page requirement per issue. The demerit is Matt Fraction, who even on DEFENDERS remains a very hit-or-miss talent.

I love Hawkeye and the premise of the book involving Kate Bishop but it's Fraction.......I just can't do it. If I hear it's epic stuff perhaps I'll get it in a trade paperback.
