James Cameron's Plans After Avatar?
Source: The Hollywood Reporter May 16, 2008

"After 'Avatar,' I want to do something a lot smaller," James Cameron told The Hollywood Reporter on Thursday.

A possible next project is The Dive, a true story about the romance between controversial Cuban free diver Francisco "Pipin" Ferreras and Frenchwoman Audrey Mestre. Under his guidance, Mestre became a free diver who broke several world records but died in 2002 while competing.

"It's a drama, a love story," Cameron said. "This will require underwater photography, which will look gorgeous in 3-D."

I'd love to see Cameron work on a small film after Avatar. But then there is the urge to see him take on Battle Angel, a film that I've been waiting for.

Cameron loves liquids.

Martin Campbell to Take The Dive

March 21, 2012

Martin Campbell has landed the director's chair on The Dive, Deadline reports. Originally planned for James Cameron to direct, the Avatar helmer will still produce alongside Jon Landau and Rae Sanchini.

J. Michael Stacynzski (who has worked with Cameron on the proposed upcoming remake of Forbidden Planet will adapt the true story of Fracisco "Pipin" Ferreras and his wife, Audrey Mestre. Together, the pair broke records as freedivers (diving without the use of breathing equipment) until Mestre tragically lost her life during a 2002 dive.

Campbell is best known as the director of Casino Royale and most recently helmed the DC Comics adaptation, Green Lantern.

Um, not to sound harsh, but is the story of a person drowning for such a self-serving and stupid reason really worthy of a "tragic tale" movie?

Jennifer Lawrence is, according to a story today at The Wrap, looking to reteam with director Francis Lawrence for The Dive, the long in development true story of Fracisco “Pipin” Ferreras and his wife, Audrey Mestre. Together, the pair broke records as freedivers (diving without the use of breathing equipment) until Mestre tragically lost her life during a 2002 dive.
James Cameron, who is attached to produce the feature, was, at one time, planning to direct the film himself. Over the years, a number of other directors have nearly took the reins on the true story with Casino Royale and Green Lantern helmer Martin Campbell being the most recent. The screenplay was initially written by Laeta Kalogridis with J. Michael Straczynski having stepped in to rewrite back in 2012.
Despite matching last names, the Lawrences are not related. They did, however, work together on the latter three films in The Hunger Games franchise, including the upcoming grand finale, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2. In The Dive, she’ll play Mestre with the Ferreras role yet to be cast.
In addition to Cameron, Barry Josephson and Rae Sanchini will produce with Mark Roybal overseeing the production for 20th Century Fox.

Seems like a good role for Jennifer Lawrence.
