The Simpsons Picked Up for Two More Seasons
Source: Fox
February 26, 2009

Fox has ordered two additional seasons of "The Simpsons," which will bring the longest-running series in primetime television history through its 22nd season. The 44-episode pickup ensures the series will reach an astounding 493 episodes. "The Simpsons" airs Sundays (8:00-8:30 PM ET/PT) on Fox.

Since its debut on January 14, 1990, "The Simpsons" immediately struck a chord with viewers across the country as it poked fun of itself and everything in its wake. With its subversive humor and delightful wit, the series has made an indelible imprint on American pop culture and has become one of television's most iconic families.

"Best. 20 Years. Ever.," a year-long global celebration honoring all things "The Simpsons," launched in January 2009 and will culminate on January 14, 2010, the 20th anniversary of the series' debut.

"The Simpsons" is a Gracie Films Production in association with 20th Century Fox Television. James L. Brooks, Matt Groening, and Al Jean are the executive producers. Film Roman is the animation house.

I don't see the show ending until it's 500th episode, whenever that's going to be.

Last I remember Season 10 was the last time I enjoyed a whole episode. I caught a few episodes from season 13 or 14 an I cringed so much on how bad it was. Every once an awhile my buddy will bring over his DVD collection an we'll watch some of the great episodes of the past and crack up like its our first time watching them. I'll definitly check out the final episode though even if it has been years since Ive seen a new episode.

The best show ever made in my honest opinion.

Looks like fox is going to finally let this long dead series die.

I'm curious how the series finale of The Simpsons will go.

i can't believe this show brings in people still...

this cash cow's been milked completley dry.

In the series finale have Sideshow Bob kill Bart. There would be an unexpected finale!

Finally Fox is putting this show out of its misery. Thank goodness.

This series should have ended in 2000 with the Behind the laughter finale. I guess the show is finally no longer profitable, because it ran out of ideas in 2000.

Yeah, I'll believe the "end date" for The Simpsons when I see it, not when I read it. This is the same thing that was reported in '03 or '04 - 2 more seasons of the show & it's over. It's '09.

We can b*** endlessly about how this show lasted too much and was milked dry, and it´s all true, but the fact remains this is one of the most important TV and animation shows of all time, this status can´t be removed from it, regardless of how past its prime it´s been.

A lot of my comedic sensibilities have been shaped up, to no small extent, by The Simpsons. It still sustained excellence for far longer than pretty much any "hot sitcom of the moment" that people on the Internet praised as the new kings. I love Arrested Devlopment, I love The Office, I love Scrubs, I love South Park, but in the long run they all stand in the shadow or The Simpsons.

No offence to everybody in this thread but can any of you read?

The show's ending has not be announced, it says a year long celebration will end in 2010.

Agreed on everything but "I love Arrested Development".

Well, not everyone is going to read the full article (including THE THREAD STARTER!), but I caught that now that you poined it out. ;)

It's because for years everyone has been hailing the death nell for The Simpsons and saying its a horrible show now (as if it's somehow fashionable to say it).

Personally, I still love it. Sure they have some episodes that are meh or just bad but every show has those especially when they've been on half as long as this one has.

I can garuntee this : Once The Simpsons ends, 99% of the people who have been saying it's bad and needs to end will be saying how great the show is and that it should keep going.

Yeah, well, sometimes I still see an ep that reminds me of their good ol´ days. They also hailed a bunch of shows as the "new kings of comedy" that came and went, sometimes pretty fast.

I'll believe it when I see it. Fox has made this claim too many times. My guess is if the Cleveland Show bombs, they'll be retracting this statement like there is no tomorrow.

About 12 years too late.

I will believe when it I see it, they could always change their minds. But if it does really happen then, it will be a little weird without the Simpsons. And they should totally let them go out with a bang on the 500th episode, not when they are just 7 short of it.

After 2001 it started going downhill, everything up till then was awesome. It needs to end soon. Still the best television show ever in my opinion

For final episode they should fast forward to the future and see what the Simpsons will be like after Bart is grown up and Homer & Marge are in retirement homes.
