While The Dark Knight Rises gave Bruce Wayne the storybook ending that Alfred Pennyworth always dreamed of, some fans thought that the scenario was just too good to be true.

But, Christian Bale himself confirmed that the film’s final scene was not a dream, hoax, or hallucination. When Alfred sees Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle sitting in a European cafe, it was the film's literal confirmation that Bruce Wayne had survived his voyage out to sea in the film’s climax.

When asked about the scene at an Entertainment Weekly event, Bale responded that what Alfred saw was indeed a reality.

“My personal opinion is no, it was not a dream. That was for real, and [Bruce] was just delighted that finally he had freed himself from the privilege, but ultimately the burden, of being Bruce Wayne."

And when asked if Alfred went over to join Bruce and Selina at their table, Bale concluded that Alfred hadn’t.

“He was just content with [Bruce] being alive, and left because that was always the life that we wanted for him.”

Well, that’s one Christopher Nolan mystery fans can finally put to rest. We wonder if Leonardo Dicaprio would be as forthcoming about the final scene in his Chris Nolan film, Inception?

It's annoying to me that people still even think there was any sort of intentional ambiguity there. I guess using a bunch of cast members from Inception may have planted that idea in the minds of some so to speak, but jeez...

Yeah, the ending is clear as day. Lucius finding the name on the patch that fixed the Bat having Bruce's name on it, the pearls going "missing" on the manifest. The Bat signal being fixed for Gordon.

I guess Inception's ending really screwed with people's minds, to the point of no return.

Nolan already did confirm it when Harvey Dent had a funeral at the end of TDK, and Talia was after Bruce because she blamed him for her father's death.

It's sad when the likes of Bale and Michael Caine need to confirm things like this that are already clear in the movie. Some people only see what they want to see.

I know. I read many forums back then and there was always someone insisting that they were alive, that that's the way comic book movies work and whatnot (I think Sam Raimi said that they're not dead unless you see the corpse, and even so it's doubtful when asked about whether Dr. Octopus was gonna return or not). Never saved the links to tell them they were wrong.

Not only did Nolan confirm it, but we kind of saw the funeral ourselves in the movie. t: But the thing with Ra's happened soon after Batman Begins, good seven years before The Dark Knight Rises. I guess it wasn't enough to see him in that train that exploded.

I remember him walking away, turning his head the other way. Plus even if it cut with just him sitting up, are you not paying attention to the film and what the point of that ending was? Because Alfred says early in the film, if he saw him somewhere with a wife or kids, he would just leave, they wouldnt have to say one word to each other since that is all Alfred would need to know. This is what happens at the end of the film. He's not going to walk to his table, he sees him, and that's enough. Anyways im pretty sure he walks the other way.
