The England Riots

I think the advent of porn on the internet has curbed some of that Irish Fire. :o

I wouldn't say so when was the last time dissident republicans in Ireland did any terrorist acts in Britain?

Even in Northern Ireland they aren't that active in the way they used to be.

Almost all the time. There are almost constant bomb alerts and shootings.

I think that Islamic fundamentalist groups are most likely to be eyeing the London Olympics as the moment to try something unpleasant.

I think you are correct, DBryan, to say that the Islamist threat it probably somewhat exaggerated. The reason that the riots were not taken by them as an opportunity to commit some sort of atrocity is probably that Islamist groups tend to be quite insular, and were probably more surprised than most by the way events unfolded. Having said that, Irish dissidents have not achieved a 7/7 style attack on the British mainland for many years. I would say that Irish republican groups feel less compulsion to murder us than the Islamist fanatics do, but the Islamists are usually less competent.

There wouldn't really be apoint for terrorists to attack during a riot Londons, Manchester, Nottingham was already on fire.

With all the racist comments coming out I wouldn't be surprised to see a Neo-Nazi/Far-Right terrorist pop up like that nail bomber a decade ago or the Norway nutter.

Just as many of those lunatics are out there are the fundamentalist terror groups.

I have very little doubt that someone somewhere out there is planning right now to do something unsavoury at the Olympics be they Irish dissidents, Islamic extremists or any other plain nutjob(s) with an agenda. It goes without saying. Before these riots I was certain that the police would be fully capable of managing and preventing threat. Now, I'm not so sure. All it takes is one person to slip through the net...

Which racist comments do you mean? I know the David Starkey business has caused a lot of upset, but I haven't been aware of many others.

The BBC once again misrepresenting the view point of someone, this time a person saying we need to look at and change the education system. And this is a person who's out there helping to clean up.

The guy specificially said that punishment can and should be part of the solution!

Why is it that people like him are being demonized?

He was right punishment alone won't change any of the problems they need to educate these young people better.

Regarding benefits though, I do feel something needs to be done because there is this mentality in england amongst young people that they don't have to do anything in life but just claim benefits because they "deserve" it.

Maybe some feel like that.

But I dunno, when you don't have a job, and if you're not studying, you feel like you don't have a purpose, like there's no real reason to get up in the morning.

Discontent is as much behind this as feelings of entitlement.

I get that but you find a lot of them are in that position because they felt that they didn't have to find a good job or study because in the end they could always go on benefits.

Not saying everyone is like that but I've been hearing it far too often.

That's very true.

Millionaire Conservative MP James Clappison, who owns twenty four homes (twenty two of which he rents out) and a cricket club whilst claiming £100,000 in expenses to pay for his second home in London, calls for benefits to be stripped from rioters.

Excellent.

What a ****. I do think the benefit system here is stupid. But it's not just things like job seekers etc. It's the benefits MPs and bankers get.

Why does someone who takes home £100,000 a year (sometimes more) deserve a penny from anyone else?

Why does someone who takes home £100,000 a year (sometimes more) deserve a penny from anyone else?

Because the someone or someones in question have lost their rights to the sort of dignity one would afford a human. Acting as animals, they should be stripped of their money and reeducated.

Huh? I think you're missing the point i was making.

Why do people who make stupid amounts of money, like MPs, deserve any type of handout? Especially handouts that help pay for their second or third home? It's absurd.

Hear hear!

Let's further disenfranchise people who already feel marginalized and ignored. That can only end well.

Yea. They should be punished. But what do you think will happen if you take away money from people who are already robbing people/places and selling drugs?

It'd make things a million times worse.
