More than four years after "Foxcatcher" was first announced, director Bennett Miller ("Moneyball") has found his leading man in Steve Carell, who's attached to star in MRC's true story of John du Pont.A paranoid schizophrenic and heir to the du Pont chemical fortune, du Pont built a wrestling training facility called Team Foxcatcher on his 800-acre Pennsylvania estate, where in 1996, he shot and killed Olympic gold medal-winning wrestler David Schultz.
Schultz was a longtime friend of du Pont who had repeatedly tried to help him. Police never established a motive for the crime, which was witnessed by Schultz's wife and du Pont's head of security. After the shooting, the multi-millionaire locked himself in his mansion for two days while he negotiated with police on the telephone. Authorities turned off his power and were able to capture him when he went outside to fix his heater. Du Pont died last December at age 72.
Miller will direct from a script by E. Max Frye and Dan Futterman, who wrote Miller's debut feature "Capote." Miller will also produce with Jon Kilik and Anthony Bregman. Production is expected to start in March.
Carell recently exited NBC's "The Office" and just wrapped Lorene Scafaria's "Seeking a Friend for the End of the World." He's currently filming Sony's "Great Hope Springs" with Meryl Streep and Tommy Lee Jones, and he's also attached to topline New Line's magician comedy "Burt Wonderstone."
