I'm sure everyone agrees that the Dark Knight is a one of a kind film that breaks so many barriers and presumptions about superhero films being lighthearted, simple, predictable (Spidey 2, X2 are excluded).

But

Do you think that with directors like JON FAVREAU and LOUIS LETERRIER (I think) planning sequels to their own superhero films, they will consciously try to make the stories much more serious, even better charecterized or darker than the previous installments or do you think they (especialy Marvel studious as a whole) won't bother and just do their own thing?

I think Iron Man 2 may be able to give us the same TDK feel thanks to the "Demon In A Bottle" story that they are APPRENTLY doing....

I don't like the direction IM 2 is going, if you know what I mean... And the first was great fun (but in a good way)

They should see TDK as an example how it should be done, especially Raimi (after the disaster of SM:3)!

Precisely!
But I'm not clearly sure what you mean by not liking the direction IM 2 is going

Imagines JON grabbing Nolan by the collar and asking, "HOW THE **** DID YOU DO THAT? YOU HAVE GOT TO TELL ME!!!"

I don't feel that darker is necessarily better. But I do think that TDK has shown that quality matters. Half-assing things like Fantastic Four will ultimately lead to a sub par movie that won't excite audiences and won't have a huge BO draw.

True but do you think that movies like Iron Man need to go the extra step even though they were very good in their own right or should they simply stick with the current formula?

One of the biggest complaints with Pre-TDK movies was that none of the characters are in any real danger and you rarely feel sympathy for them
Also, the villains pretty much wait for the good guy to defeat them whereas in this one the Joker keeps doing his thing

Hulk and Iron Man need to maintain cinematic approaches appropriate to Hulk and Iron Man--not Batman. Just because The Dark Knight is dark and serious doesn't mean every superhero movie needs to be. In my opinion, the Iron Mans of the world help foster the need for The Dark Knights of the world and vice versa. Both work well for different reasons. Not all movies need to be on the same side of the spectrum in order to be good. Good quality films in the genre should inspire good quality films in the genre, regardless of tone.

I think Marvel, now that they're in charge, won't allow the whole genre to go the way of TDK in terms of every character needing to be dark.

DC tried making Flash in the mold of Batman after the movies and it didn't work so hopefully they won't do the same with their movies.

I do think there are two models to the superhero trilogy now.

Nolan-character study- (batman, x-men-yeah it came first but the team aspect made it different)
Donner- love story precedent(spidey,superman/returns,incredible hulk)

Agreed on those accounts. A supehero/comic book movie doesn't need to follow the tone of TDK to become successful. Just good writing, quality actors and smart directing are the fundamentals that they shouldn't be skimping on.

Agreed...
I was just wondering
I also take back any negative comments I may have made on Iron Man
It and even Incredible Hulk deserve the same anount of love as TDK

I was just talking about how they could take certain aspects such as the fact that everything is beginning to spiral out of control and the hero has his hands full.
Plus, just like any other war, the war on crime/evil will always have casualties

But, how do you compare the latest three (IM, IH & TDK) with the previous X-Men and Spider-Man movies, excluding the third editions of course

i dont know about you guys...but i believe that the future of superhero movies lies with these guys!

My thoughts precisely.. Ironman has to stay the course with its tone. Just cause it works for TDK doesn't mean it works for all hero movies. What Marvel needs to do and maintain is make quality writing, direction, and casting its #1 priority with all its films.

what? freakazoid?!? tick?!!? QUAILMAN?!?!?!?

p.s. not a single one fo those was serious :)

IM2 shouldnt be to far off from where it set out, I mean the movie is fun theres no need to make it super serious or dark its unessary. In fact only Batman, Punisher and Cap (depending on what time period he is) should do what TDK did the others should stay light hearted but have a good and strong story line I mean theres no reason to change them around Spidey 2 and Iron Man where great no need to screw them over for a darker story line.

If anything superhero movies have to become legit. Mixing and balancing romance, action, drama, and humor.

there are plenty of other dark characters out there...not every single hero should follow what tdk did tone wise but certainly more than just those 3....

moonknight, ghost rider*, daredevil*, elektra*, even superman could have a very dark and gritty, almost apocolyptic feeling to it. that said..you are right about im2. stick with what the 1st one did. and most others too.

* indicates films that SHOULD have been dark and gritty but were not

Not every character is dark like Batman. The dark characters can take alot from TDK, but lighter characters can learn from Iron Man and Spiderman 2. Of course, TDK is the best comic movie to date, but if done right, a lighter superhero movie has a chance to be as good or greater than TDK. You look at what TDK did.

1. Got an A-list of actors( I mean guys like Morgan Freeman in the movie for a small part)
2. A balance of good storytelling, action, drama, romance and humor
3. Not campy( You can have a lighter superhero movie without being campy)

These are things to take from TDK. Not one of those is exclusively in Dark Movies.
