Well, it doesn't exist, that's for sure.
I want a superhero video game that incorporates epic action and storyline with sandbox freedom and immersive minigames to approximate the secret identity/mundane side of the superhero life.
After playing Spider-Man 2, I found out what it was like to be able to move quickly and freely all around the game world like a superhero, so that even just MOVING was fun.
After playing Hulk: Ultimate Destruction, I found out how much power I could have in the game world, to level buildings and execute complicated move-throw-punching combos with just a few face buttons and d-pad. The WORLD was destructable.
After playing Rockstar's Bully I found out that even the most mundane parts of a secret identity can be fun in small doses and help add to the coolness of the high flying over-the-top parts of the gameplay. I felt like I was truly NORMAL BY DAY.
After playing Superman Returns I found out that giving a player all of his abilities up front is pretty danged fun! That flying through a city at super speed is just plain cool. I felt like I was truly SUPER.
After playing Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and peeking at Just Cause I found out how HUGE gameworlds can be, and still be FULL of things to do and stories to engage in and people and traffic to sort of background the place.
After playing Shadow of the Colossus, and fighting all these unique beasts I found out how EPIC BOSSES could be if each one is given enough care instead of treated like a cameo to fulful some kind of 'how many villains can we shove in' quota... that they could truly be supervillains that have to be outwitted and figured out instead of me running around to find a panel to hit to shut them down long enough for me to put 2-3 combos in before they come back online.
After playing Freedom Force, I found out how important COMEDY is to comic book lore, and how much value can be added if we stop taking everything so seriously for just a few seconds at a time. (I'm talking to you, Mr. Miller!)
After playing City of Heroes, I found out how rewarding MULTIPLAYER team ups of heroes can be. That working together with diverse powers is about the funnest thing in existance.
After playing games like Beyond Good and Evil, Prince of Persia and the like, I realized that a good STORYLINE is what takes a good game into the realm of excellence.
And of course, I learned from playing Spider-Man on the PS1 by Neversoft that UNLOCKABLES based on 40+ years of comics that many properties have... I learned that those unlockables make the game very VERY replayable, and fun to do over and over again.
That's the game I want to play, I want it all, STORYLINE, to feel SUPER, to have fun just MOVING in a HUGE, FULL world while being NORMAL by day, with a touch of COMEDY before fighting EPIC BOSSES for lots of UNLOCKABLES.
If a superhero game had this, then, I'd buy it without a second thought. Even if I didn't like the superhero that much, I'd go for it. Funny thing is, almost ALL superheroes have the ability to fit this mold, and yet we never seem to get this? Why?
Iron Man would own with this concept, as would Wonder Woman. Of course Superman, Batman and Spider-Man, but even Flash, Robin, Thor and Cloak and Dagger could benefit from this format.
