The General Comic Discussion Thread - Part 2

Some good selections here, though I remain annoyed that DC continues to give Azzarello’s WW run the treatment they should be giving Greg Rucka’s…

I am of the opinion that Rucka’s WW run in Rebirth is the definitive presentation of the character. I loved his WW: Year One
Yeah it's weird that Rucka's run is getting snubbed. I really dig these compact comics but I'm scratching my head as to why DC chose Earth One followed by the New 52 to represent for Wonder Woman.

Mariko Tamaki’s Zatanna book has been an unfortunate disappointment in my eyes. I would’ve thought that would’ve been a good pairing but I found it a more boring version of a story that we have seen from other writers/stories.

Hopefully this one is good.

As someone who hasn't read a ton of Wonder Woman, but have read both Earth One & Rebirth... Rebirth is by far one I gravitate more torwards to. Very odd choice indeed.

Also, can't wait for a new GLC! I'm gonna have to make some cuts on some of these titles I am picking up at some point. Sheesh!

Please for the love of god, not a big crossover event again.

So, DC universe infinite is now avaliable here in Germany.
But its rather pointless still to me because the earliest you get the newest comics, is 30 days after release.
Which is crazy because right now i can buy this weeks Batman on Amazon...but even with the 90€ subscription on DC Universe Infinite...i would get the same comic late january.

DCs official subscription service doesnt offer DC comics that come out this week...its completely useless for me this way.

Yeah, DC Universe Infinite comes out 30 after release here as well. I’m definitely good with that. I’m willing to wait and it saves me a ton from buying so many physical copies of everything I read.

Its true value comes from reading older stuff anyway. I’ve probably read 50 issues of House of Mystery this past year. Those are a pretty penny at my local comic shop. Right now I’m reading Ram V’s Swamp Thing run. I probably wouldn’t have read that otherwise because it isn’t Alec Holland as Swamp Thing. But it turns out that I love the run. So I read things that I would not normally read.

I find myself reading anything Kirby, Maggin, Englehart, or O’Neil. And I don’t have to pay the premium for those as well.

I definitely get my money’s worth out of the subscription.

To me its that i like to talk about the new issues and stuff, that is a big part of why i buy them Digital to begin with.
I like to discuss and theorize with people after an issue comes out.
That is just not happening when i only can read an issue 30 days later...so for someone like me, who loves reading comics as much as talking with others about them...its a huge problem that they dont offer the newest issues right away.

For those that dont really care about the Discussion, i can see why the 30 days are not a huge deal.

The real beef in most subscription services is the library yes.
Having access to so many DC comics, is just a very tempting offer.

DCU Infinite is perfect for me because I pretty much NEVER read things as soon as they come out. I mean, there are a few exceptions, but outside of following the writers I love, I basically just choose books to read based on word-of-mouth, and that takes time to get to me anyway. I need to hear more than "the 1st issue was great" in order for me to give something a shot. It's gotta at least be, "this arc has been great" to motivate me to start reading.

Speaking of which, your weekly reviews are sorely missed. :)

I miss doing them too, but im just too busy to do them at the moment.
I hope that changes next year, because i had a lot of fun doing those.

I'm not quite at the point where I'm going all digital but I have been picking up some first issues, like JLU, and the new Question book, to see how they are before deciding to read them digitally. As the "All-In" initiative keeps progressing, I'm finding that DC keeps putting more books out that I wanna read but no longer have too much physical space to keep them.

The Absolute line has been great so far. While I think some of the cracks are showing in Batman, Wonder Woman has found a great way to skirt the kinda boring marriage to Greek mythology to make it more interesting and keeps her adjacent to military partnership which always felt sort of odd to me. Superman is my favorite of the books this far. I love the exploration of the politics of Krypton and the throwback to Superman as a champion of the people. While Morrison did the same thing, I find this one much more palatable and profound than Morrison's which didn't feel as explored a concept as it should have been. My only worry with this line is how long can it sustain itself before it becomes just another series of superhero comics repeating themselves? Superman vs Brainiac...but different? There's only so many ways to make that interesting and I'm not sure if those ways haven't already expired.

I've read the Batman: Dark Patterns preview in this week's books and damnit, I think I'll be picking this up. Dan Waters is a special writer when he's on point and Hayden Sherman is such a nice breath of fresh air as far as artists go. Also, I'm a sucker for the oval bat-logo. The book looks so good.

I'm all over Ram V's New Gods as my most anticipated book. Tom King's Black Canary debuted and was quite good while his Jenny Sparks book remains confoundingly awful.

The big book for me this year, from DC, has been Si Spurrier and Aaron Campbell's Hellblazer. An excoriating examination and deconstruction of the American Dream as a nightmare inherent in the very fabric of the country, this has been probably THE smartest book and most political DC has published in a long time, perhaps moreso than Tom King's Rorschach book.

Unfortunately, it sounds like critics really got to Spurrier regarding his Flash run. The art has taken a downward turn and this current arc feels a little too generic for me, though I think Inspector Pilgrim is a great character who needs to be kept around. I found myself getting pretty bored with this lastest issue, even though that pinball machine cover was pretty awesome.

Has anyone been reading Watters's Nightwing and/or PKJ's Batman & Robin?

I read both, so far nothing too special.
I like that Batman & Robin so far focuses a great deal on Damian and him dealing with his identity, who he is and who he wants to be.
It is what Williamson already started in his last issues, here we seem to continue this and i like it.
So far i quite enjoy it.

Nighwing is only i think 2 issues in, so its not yet clear which direction Watters will go, but so far i like it.
The current arc is one that has been used quite often in Comics, where Police or some other group gets to turn a city into a police state, which always turns out is bad because the people in power are bad.
So the arc so far isnt anything special, but i tend to like such arcs from time to time.
Writing so far is enjoyable, art is good...i cant say much bad about it at the moment.

Dan Waters is a special writer when he's on point
Glad to see others giving Waters his due. I love his writing. Sword of Azrael from a few years back was a beautiful and tragic story. He really kills it when he is firing on all cylinders. I’m expecting good things from his Nightwing run.

Fourth World is very special to me and I tend to be very critical of most writers’ takes on it. I absolutely adore Kirby’s work when he created it. I firmly see Fourth World as Kirby’s opus. Only Tom King has come close to capturing the beauty of Kirby’s world building. I’m not a huge fan of Ram V, though I will say that his Swamp Thing run was great. I’ll be looking at this with a judgmental eye for sure.

Jenny Sparks is just flat out unreadable to me.

I have been so disappointed with Spurrier on Flash. He had big shoes to fill coming in after Adams, and he has not succeeded for me.
Wally is one of my favorite characters and Spurrier really doesn’t write him well at all.

Im very behind on Flash, which is a shame.
Its not that the Run is particular bad, its just rather boring somehow.
Nothing that really grips me to keep reading compared to Adams run.
