The Good Citizens of Metropolis: The Casting Thread

Wolfgang Novogratz (25) and Auli'I Cravalho (22)...

I know what you are getting at by Cornsyrup doesnt embody the look of a 25 yr old. He looks strongly in his 30s.

As for other comments on how he doesn't look like Cavill... There are numerous pages of sites comparing the two. It isn't just me that thinks it.

I’ll throw this out while I am here. Samara Weaving for Supergirl.

Corenswet played a teenager when he was well into his 20s and hasn’t aged dramatically since then.

As for him looking somewhat like Cavill… so what? All Superman actors have had a somewhat similar look because that’s how Superman looks. I don’t think anyone would mistake him for Henry unless they aren’t all that familiar with either actor.

And there are plenty of people who think KJ Apa looks totally wrong for the role and can’t act. It’s fine that you keep championing him here (I haven’t seen him in anything so I can’t say one way or the other) and if Gunn or whoever is handling casting wants him, then fine. But let’s not act like a handful of fans on a message board saying someone isn’t a good fit for a role or looks too much like someone else automatically rules them out.

Starting to feel like the best route is to just cast someone we’ve never heard of.

Most of these actors look like they'd be better suited playing Superboy. Even Pattinson almost looked too young as Batman.

Apa is not a good actor. When Riverdale was promoting the death of a significant character(was not that significant really), many fans of the show were hoping is was Apa/Archie. If fans are hoping for the death of the lead character, never a good sign, for the show or the actor.

I do wonder how soon we will hear of a casting call? In past times we were lucky to know many names and their reactions to the casting process. We even knew the final three for Flyby(I think it was that not made film) and that Walker had pulled his name at the very end of the process, shortly after it occurred.

can I tell you, I’ve started seeing Wolfgang’s name pop up a lot so I watched some YouTube clips and he definitely has the look. That kind of kindly midwestern almost hallmarkish look. His voice is not perfect but you can probably train him there. And of course always I adore Auli’l

I didn't say he is auto ruled out because myself and others think he looks like Cavill, I just think if we want to distance ourselves from the last films then why pick someone that resembles the last guy.

Reeve looks nothing like Cavill nor do either of them look like Cain... Sure they might share similar qualities but you wouldn't find anyone confusing them for one another where as Corenswet does with Cavill.

... No offense, but did you miss the part about Clark being early-mid 20's?
No, I saw that. Just can't wrap my mind around a Superman that looks fresh out of high school. The role requires maturity and gravitas, something that only comes with age. 28's probably the youngest I'd go.

I have to think Gunn definitely has a picture in his mind of how he wants his superman to look, so he probably already has actors in mind that fits that, whether he has started casting or not.
He prolly also knows how he wants the rest of the cast to look and act also.

The actor who ends up playing Superman may very well end up being 28 or 27 anyway .
It's just that the character may be 25 in the script or the film.

They'll look at an age range possibly between 25 and 29, if the actor can pass for being in their mid 20s , which lots of actors can.

If the character is 25, they aren't going to restrict their casting call to just 25 years olds.

Gunn has also stated that this version when we meet him is Superman not Superboy, so I don't think the fresh out of highschool look is gonna make it in terms of casting.

I agree , they're going to want an actor with Gravitas and Presence ,even if the character is a rookie Superman.

It’s an interesting time to play superman isn’t it. When he first appeared it was the world war 2 era and whoever the actor is will have to play to two very different sides of America and unite them as much as possible. And the world for that matter

That was a stand in for Cavill, there's absolutely zero evidence that he would be looking for a Routh/Reeve physique. Most actors aren't built like superman already so they'll work to achieve whatever look the studio wants, even Cavill was slender and before MoS.
The Peacemaker Batman/Wonder Woman cameo looked liked Ben and Gale. I just found that interesting. The reality is at that time Ben and Gale appeared to be coming back. I am just speculating but I think Gunn will go for the tall thin Superman over the bulky Henry Cavill type. Looking forward to casting.

They were supposed to look like them they represented Ben and Gal. Peacemaker was filmed long before all of this DC switch up, at that time Ben and Gal still had roles (even if Affleck was on his way out)

Right. I think people are just going to have to accept the Justice League cameo at the end of Peacemaker as a minor continuity error moving forward - especially if Momoa and Miller end up getting recast. It can't be helped. As you said, it was shot before Gunn took on an executive role with DC. Executive James Gunn will have to make some decisions at the expense of Creative James Gunn. Comes with what he signed up for.

Having the audacity to question…the guy in charge of this whole thing.

That’s not mental gymnastics. That’s mental Cirque du Soleil.

Christopher Reeve was 25 when he played Superman for the first time. I don’t see what the issue is.

Just going by what Gunn is saying, this superman will prolly be in his 2nd or 3rd year as the hero.

Clark will ( probably? ) already be established as the iconic reporter also.

Let's hope this time we see him doing some actual investigative reporting.

Plus they were barely visible so you can just redo with having to think about it.

The general audience doesn't care about casting changes if the film is good.

All of the actors in Sawyer's tweet look like boys. Superman: The Movie was almost 50 years ago, people aged differently back then. I mean, just look at the cast of Cheers:

Reeve really did look well into his thirties when he started playing Supes.
