The Good Citizens of Metropolis: The Casting Thread

I would simply suggest... if a certain Latverian resident doesn't pan out... then a certain billionaire megalomaniac might be right up a certain Ken doll's alley...
Gosling? Don't really see him fitting well as Doom OR Lex.

I'm kind of growing on the idea of Teller as Lex, though. Unpopular, but I really think it could work.

I always thought Liev Schrieber might make a good Lex

I have been Watching the Guardians of the Galaxy movies getting ready for Volume 3 and can’t help but be fascinated by the idea of a young Chris Pratt playing Big Blue. He could have pulled of the big ole country boy and Dorky Clark Kent. He also would have been a striking Superman.

For me it's all in the tone. I want lots of shots that are bright and hopeful.
I want my superman to be proud of his powers and happy in who he is.

But I think because his previous scary angry character is still a joke that people will struggle to separate them. It's like everytime I see Tim Hiedecker in something, no matter how straight he plays it I can't help but laugh because he often plays the straight hi guy but his history makes it hard to separate them.

I dunno , I just honestly think people would laugh straight away in the cinema when they see Glenn before he even opens his mouth.
Howerton clearly has more dramatic roots than Hiedecker though. That is one of the reasons why he's so great as Dennis. - I don't know if he's a great dramatic actor but I have my suspicions he is. I frankly think worrying about typecasting in that manner is old fashioned and has been disproven time and again - if he's great or even good it isn't going to matter, worrying that people will just see Dennis is a waste of time for them to even consider if he's the guy they wanted. Very few things are more fun to see than actors proving the public perception of them wrong.

I want Luthor to be a pretty damn serious character since every iteration of him on film has been played at least a little comically but you gotta assume that this movie will have a reasonably strong comedic edge to it - Luthor having a bit of Dennis in him would be an assert, not a hinderance if that is the tone. I can see him absolutely rocking a characterization close to Morrison's Luthor.

I'm personally tired of the "importance of Superman" stuff we keep getting, it's so dreary and comes across as a bit pretentious.

I want to have fun not cry because I am proud of Superman, I want to smile and cheer for Supes.

The tone of this trailer is the opposite of what I am after. They did a great job piecing it all together and I did like most of the casting but I feel it certainly unsold me on Corenswet though.

Thanks for sharing!
Yep. Overthinking the cultural and mythic importance of Superman rather than just treating him as an interesting, engaging character like any other is a massive issue with most Superman media. Most of the best Superman stories have some of that but its a big part of why so many Superman adaptations fall into the trap of framing him as a God rather than just a really nice man who has the power of a God. A highly important distinction.

Trailer is neat though. I just... struggle with seeing Corenswet being interesting in the role. He's a solid actor and has a lovely charisma, he just feels like a decent and safe choice rather than something bold and potentially great.

There are two Always Sunny clips I'd recommend: Dennis Gets a Valentine's Day Gift and The Gang Fakes Dennis' Death. Can't link to them because I'm not sure if there's any cursing that violates Hype rules.

Howerton is funny, charismatic, genuinely scary and (from time to time) heartfelt in It's Always Sunny. Can't speak to what he did in A.P. Bio (never watched it), but he's getting strong reviews for Blackberry. My honest instinct is he'd be great as Lex.

You ever been in a storm, Boom?

Yeah, definitely on the Howerton train. I love me some left-field casting.

I also am digging Lewis Pullman for Clark Kent / Superman. He’s 30, and 6ft.

I'm weary of left field casting for Lex. They tried it last time and it blew up in their face.

It was a disaster.

I'd rather they play it safe. Get a big name but someone we can trust.
That was about 200 miles to the left of left field lol. I’ll take full on classic Lex, but I also don’t mind something a little different as long as it’s a sensible deviation while keeping the core Lex attributes.

This isn't a "Prove it then" moment but I'm curious as to where you get this idea from?

Outside of Tim and Eric, Heidecker's roles are usually pretty serious in a pretty similar way to Howertons. They both play the serious straight man but we know it's comedic because of the context. I would even think Heidecker has had more film roles overall than Howerton, and it's very much a part of Heidecker's shtick to play a serious character that feels unsettling and unhinged next to someone playing a lighter role.

I have to be honest: I was almost entirely unaware Heidecker had done anything resembling dramatic or straight roles - looking at his filmography he's not really been in more than one or two things that've been on my radar. So, fair point. All I meant was that Howerton's original background was in drama rather than comedy and I just think that shows in his style, the reason Dennis is so unbelievably funny is that there's something strangely real about his emotions and outbursts even when they're goofy which speaks to Howerton's dramatic roots.

There's also, and this is entirely subjective, just a natural goofiness to Heidecker's entire vibe and presence that isn't there in Howerton. Howerton's natural vibe isn't terribly goofy. He just has a completely different quality to Heidecker. Also he's a vastly better actor, IMO.

Oh fair enough, Imo Heidecker is a much more versatile actor and has shown it throughout his career in the many things he has been a part of. I don't think Howerton is a bad actor by any means but from Sunny to A.P Bio (can't think of what else he has been in) I think I have seen only a few sides of Howerton compared to the many sides of Heidecker who has a much broader career and broader character catalog. Its all good though, no harm just opinions. :)
