It depends, historically it is easily Street Fighter. Now-a-days, Soul Calibur. Smash Brothers isn't a fair comparrison to any of these as it is entirely unique and in a genre of its own.
The poll in that thread and this is exactly the same without SSB and added Dalkstalkers.
...and the VS series is essentially Street Fighter, not it's own thing...
It's between Virtua Fighter and Tekken for me, but I eventually went with Virtua Fighter. Street Fighter may have heralded the genre, but for me, it doesn't stand up against modern fighters.
Easily Street Fighter. Aside from helping pave any fighter that came after it and basically making the genre (in my eyes atleast), it still is a great game. Street Fighter 2 still is a fun game after all this time, and the MVC series is just mindless combo fun and very popular at the arcades. Not to count Street Fighter 4 should be out in a few years and I'm eager to see what they do with the series .
