The Horror Thread - Part 7

It's October....I made a list....

A few notes regarding the list: Films are listed chronologically. Any franchise longer than a trilogy I only listed the first film. I controversially decided Alien is sci-fi, not horror. These are based entirely on my own tastes, obviously.

Ha. I get that. But I feel they are very relevant to such a list, if anything on the account there is nothing else like them in horror or anywhere else. They may not be everyone's cup of tea, but I feel they qualify as being necessary watching for any devout horror fan.

Happy October fellow horror fans! The biggest and best time of the year for us. Anyone started off with any films? Last night I did Behind The Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon and tonight it’s The Hills Have Eyes remake. :word:

I saw Slice... it could have been better.

New to me movies so far this month: Street Trash (B-), Trick Or Treats (D), It Stains The Sands Red (A-), The Quarry (D), Hell House LLC II: The Abaddon Hotel (D+)

And just started Sam Was Here.

I watched Night of the Living Dead for the first time yesterday because of its 50th Anniversary, it was great. Haven't seen anything today, I might watch Shaun of the Dead 'cause I haven't seen it in a long time.

Nice list (I love lists). Lot of those I still haven't seen that I need to.

I can understand HG Lewis importance and influence, but I can't stand watching his films.
Two Thousand Maniacs is my favorite of his movies I've seen. It's stupid, goofy fun and gave use the hilariously bad 2001 Maniacs remake-quel. Man, I need to try and squeeze those in this month around everything else.

Happy October fellow horror fans! The biggest and best time of the year for us. Anyone started off with any films? Last night I did Behind The Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon and tonight it’s The Hills Have Eyes remake. :word:
I do 31 Nights of Halloween every year (along with Animated August, Sci-Fi-September, Arnold SchwarzeNovmeber and DVDecember. Lotta movies the latter half of the year). Since I hurt my back over the weekend, I caught up on the first 8 Friday the 13th films. I think I've only really ever seen 1, 2 and 8 all the way through until yesterday, and I only saw 2 and 8 because I saw them in theaters. I have a pile of 90 horror flicks sitting in my bedroom for the month, all from my unwatched pile only. I only got one piece off my pile becayse all 8 films came in one collection.

I watched Night of the Living Dead for the first time yesterday because of its 50th Anniversary, it was great. Haven't seen anything today, I might watch Shaun of the Dead 'cause I haven't seen it in a long time.
One of my alltime favorite films. I own at least 4 copies of it. If working at NYCC doesn't break me Friday I might wander to Brooklyn to catch a midnight viewing of it.

Considering I keep acquiring movies and taking forever, I think this October, minus my annual Halloween viewing of Trick ‘R Treat and the Halloween series, I think I’m going to see how many not viewed horror films I’ve got and start watching them for my usual October marathons.

Slice felt like some lost eighties B-movie

So apparently I'm the only person on the planet who thinks Hereditary was awful. Shrug.
I wasn't a big fan either. Not as disappointing as It Comes At Night

People kept saying it was super scary but then I watched it and I didn't find it scary at all. I wouldn't all it that original either. It probably feels original if you don't watch many horror films but if you do then you can see influences from the likes of the Exorcist, Rosemary's Baby, the Omen, the Babadook and so on. I do think it Hereditary was well made though. Cinematography, sound production, ect was solid.

The Autopsy of Jane Doe, Let Us Prey and Jessabelle are some good underrated horror films from this decade in my opinion

Saw that "The Endless" was on Netflix now. Think I'll check it out tonight.

I saw Hell House LLC, and honestly it wasn’t bad. Pretty low budget, a lot less “loud noises, nothing happens” than Paranormal Activity, with some good tension. I feel the reveal doesn’t actually reveal much but it was still pretty interesting. I haven’t seen many people talking about this one here.

Oh yeah Autopsy of Jane Doe, that was fun. I was genuinely upset like I hadn't in a long time with a horror film.

I remember Hell House LLC being okay. The sequel was a letdown, even by mediocre standards.

So I'm watching at least one horror movie a day that I've never seen before all month. I've always wanted to do this.

Current progress:

Oct 1st: Winchester
Oct 2nd: The Pact
Oct 3rd: Absentia
Oct 4th: The Devil’s Candy
Oct 5th: Sam Was Here

THE PACT, ABSENTIA, and THE DEVIL'S CANDY were all terrific movies. All three genuinely unnerving and well crafted. WINCHESTER was dull and SAM WAS HERE is one of those tedious movies where you're just waiting for it to get to the inevitably underwhelming twist at the end.

I didn't care for the end of Sam Was Here either, but I liked it up till the end.

I've watched this the last few days -

The Mummy (1932) Boris Karloff
The Mummy's Hand (1940) Dick Foran
The Mummy's Tomb (1942) Lon Chaney Jr.
The Mummy's Ghost (1944) John Carradine
The Mummy's Curse (1944) Lon Chaney Jr.
The Mummy (1999) Brendan Fraser
The Mummy Returns (2001) Brendan Fraser
The Mummy (2017) Tom Cruise

Mine is Invisible Man, Claude Rains chewed every bit of scenery.

Mine is Invisible Man, Claude Rains chewed every bit of scenery.
I'll be watching that sometime this week. Right now I'm starting the Creature trilogy.

Saw Insiduous: The Last Key the other day.

Some interesting bits but not great. I still need to see the 3rd film. Liked the first 2 and wouldn't mind rewatching them.

Ghost Stories... ahh, I loved it up until the last 10 minutes. If the whole “skeptical guy comes around to the paranormal” was in itself the twist, I’d been happy. But, the twist-twist was dumb and not a solid result for the film.

I’ll add Upgrade to my recent viewings, that movie was a solid delight. And those fright scenes were pretty horrific.

Showed my girlfriend Trick R Treat. She enjoyed it, but not as much as I have through the years. Still surprised we haven’t got a sequel yet.

I can’t wait to drive to Omaha for the 40th Halloween showing on the 17th and then do a late night showing of the 2018 Halloween on the 18th.
