Still, I think that is a guilt that many guys my age (who didn't make the choice to serve) feel about the Wars.

Movie looks great, bomb disposal guys are pretty hardcore, and the movies inspired by them is pretty topline entertainment. Blown Away for example.

Kathryn Bigelow has always been great though. People who think that Michael Bay is a great visual director or a great action movie director need only watch Point Break. Or Strange Days. Or Near Dark. I wasn't a fan of Blue Steel or K-19 but she's still a great director and she makes Bay look like a hyperactive toddler with a camcorder when it comes to action films.

I was in the same boat...500 Days of Summer was sold old for me....I just couldn't make Hurt Locker. Looks like 500 Days of Summer isn't opening till next week in the Philly are.

I don't know why Bigelow dropped off the map, she's one of the best female action film directors out there. She even directed a respected cult classic like Point Break.

Hurt Locker does look cool, but I don't think it's playing anywhere near me.

Since I live in the LA area, it's definitely playing near me. But I always have reservations about seeing violent war movies on the big screen. I'm such a wuss.

That's not the best thing for me either. During my first showing of TDK, I was so tense my foot cramped for most of it.

The closest theater that's playing this is 45 minutes from where I live. Im not sure if it's worth the trip. Is there a further release date for this movie to play at more theaters?

Honestly I'm still trying to process this film. It was absolutely as tense and terrific as everyone said it would be. Some of the scenes were just jaw dropping in both the material and how they were filmed. I really don't want to ruin this film so I won't post any spoilers, because this is really the kind of film where you need to go in not knowing too much. I will say there were some shocking things.

The acting was top notch. I think we'll be seeing big things from Renner, Mackie, and Geraghty in the future, and I think Renner may even be a dark horse candidate for Best Actor. And with the academy widening the best film contender list I think this deserves to be one of the nominees.

Absolutely my favourite film of the summer. It gets a 10/10 from me.

That is really good casting. I would pay to see a Hurt Locker sequel with him in it. I know it would never happen, but he made the character so damn engaging.

I have a friend who used to do this, in terms of working on a bomb squad. Finally saw the movie.

What happened to the guy who triggered the bomb from the opening sequence? Did they shoot him, did he escape, what? I know it's irrelevant, but it was a niggling detail.

Love the dialogue between the soldiers. Easy and somewhat pointless, not measured, etc.

The movie conveys a real sense of danger, the difficulty for soldiers to trust anyone, and in some cases, the difficulty in knowing what to do.

Great tension and pacing, throughout the film. The stuff with the bomb harness that can't be removed was indeed pretty powerful.

I was surprised to see Ralph Fiennes show up, and I thought I saw Guy Pearce, but wasn't convinced of it until I read the first page of this thread again.

The film revolves around simple concepts, but they're powerful ones.

One element I really enjoyed was, unlike many war movies where the soldiers are running around screaming and firing weapons and taking pleasure in their kills (which I know happens), the disconnect from killing in this movie. The sodliers are almost mathematical in the way they take lives, and their reactions to what they've done.

The interaction and conflict between the army and Iraqis is also explored, many of whom I notice, are portrayed as complete morons who apparently want to be shot for long periods of time.

There's really not much of a story here. There's more of a semblance of a story than anything else. As such, it's not a particularly deep or even that intelligent a movie, but it is a good one. With ten minutes to go...the film finally addresses the main theme of THE HURT LOCKER, and it's kind of obvious, but touching. The moment where James is with his son talking about things that are important is touching as well.

Minor quibble: Whoever stocked the cereal shelves in the store sequence didn't make it very realistic. No store in the world has 12 or more rows of Cinnamon toast crunch. Not that I've been to, at least. .

Renner is very good, as is the supporting cast...but Best Actor? I don't think so. He's good, but while his character is intriguing, he doesn't do anything really spectacular as an actor in this movie. And I'm not sure there'd be much point to a sequel.
