Columbia Pictures has signed Clive Owen to topline The International, an action-thriller about an Interpol agent who investigates corruption at powerful banking institutions.

Variety says the film will be directed by Tom Tykwer, with shooting scheduled to begin in September.

Eric Singer wrote the script and Mosaic Media Group's Charles Roven and Richard Suckle are producing, along with Lloyd Phillips. John Woo, Terence Chang and Jeff Lurie are executive producing.

Owen, who previously starred in Closer for the studio, also stars in New Line's upcoming Shoot 'Em Up and The Golden Age for Universal. He's also been cast to reprise his role in the Sin City sequel.

Never heard of the director but With Owen involved and the concept i'm interested:up:

He just did Perfume...and Run Lola Run is fantastic.
I'll see Owen in anything right now. This sounds good.

That's two pretty divergent and critically well received movies he has under his belt

Watts will play a Manhattan assistant district attorney who partners with the agent to take down the bank.

Eric Singer wrote the screenplay. Filming will take place in Berlin.

Mosaic Media Group's Charles Roven and Richard Suckle as well as Lloyd Phillips are producing.

After making an appearance to support the film at the Toronto Film Festival in September, Owen will get right into shooting The International, the next film from German mastermind Thomas Tykwer, which he told us a little about as well. "It's like a big international, political thriller with a guy trying to expose and bring down a big bank, and every time he gets close, people are backing off, and strange things are happening with people being murdered, and he's obsessively trying to bring them down. It's like a throwback '70s very political thriller with some amazing bursts of action in there as well."

Hopefully this will have more substance than the over-rated Run Lola Run :(

You ever see Perfume? Actually has a pretty decent story, and a better style too I think.

Clive Owen in his own spy film? I like it.

He's come a long way from The Professor in The Bourne Identity.

The International Spotted in Milan!
Source: Andrea, Monte
November 30, 2007

BadTaste.it tells us they took photos of filming for The International that took place in Milan, Italy:

I have some exclusive images from the Italian set of The International, Tom Twyker's movie with Clive Owen and Naomi Watts!

They are filming some key scenes in Milan, and two our readers took some images from the set. You can view them here.

Our reader wrote us some spoilers from the scenes too... They said that Italian actor Luca Barbareschi will portray a financier who turns to politics, and in those scenes he's on the stage during an electoral talk in; suddenly a killer from the roof of Grand Hotel Gallia shoots him. Barbareschi gets killed, and policemen rush to the hotel, while people run terrified. Naomi Watts and Clive Owen are having a drink in a pub the production built near the electoral stage (you can see on the right of the wide photo). Owen discovers the true killer and throws himself into a car-chase through Milano's streets. But due to traffic the killer must stop the car, so Owen tries to approach his car, but when he gets closer he finds that the killer has escaped without being seen...

Be sure to check out the photos at the link above! The Sony action-thriller, opening August 15, centers on an obsessive Interpol agent (Owen) who spearheads an investigation into one of the world's most high-profile and powerful banking institutions in an attempt to expose them for worldwide arms brokering, corruption and murder. Kind of sounds like a John Le Carre novel. That plus Clive Owen will guarantee that I will be there

I'll watch anything with Naomi Watts.

Looks like it's cashing in on the whole Bourne/Bond genre which has become very popular at the moment, however it does have a better director and star, but whether it makes the grade is dubious.

The fact is has Clive Owen means it will sell anyway, especially with the genre. I don't expect the film to be great, but most likely better than Bourne.
