The inTOXICATED DC Boards Lounge - Part 2

I don't think I would call Daredevil grimdark really. It's not colorful or anything, but I can't say it's really all that dark either, outside some of the stuff with the Kingpin and his past.

I also don't agree with almost any of your assessment either, though. I don't think the reaction to the show has anything to do with either of those points, I think the positive reaction is due to the show just being good and well made.

It's a good show and well made.

But do you really feel that if it wasn't a Marvel Studios production the reactions would be this overwhelmingly positive across the board? in this era where Marvel Studios can do no wrong in the eyes of many?

Know what? don't answer that I already know your answer.

As I more often than not do with you I'll agree to disagree and keep it movin.

I see what you mean there, but I don't know, I feel it's pretty warranted here. I seem to recall a lot of people being skeptical about the Netflix shows, too, though I admittedly didn't follow it a huge amount. I also really don't think that point is the same you were raising in your early post which basically seems to boil down to people liking the show so just because they know nothing about Daredevil, or at least, that's what I took back from what you said.

Alright, that's fine, too.

I made more than one point and that was one of them yes. Another had to do with people thinking they had the live action Marvel universe figured out tonally when in reality it had been to proven that it is as diverse as the Marvel Comics universe is long ago. The honeymoon phase not being over between MS and fanboys online is another but nevertheless...

In adaptions so far they didn't make him the angry walking trope -I think- so there may be hope for his show.

Never seen any adaptations with Power Man in them but I hope you're right.

I haven't really seen half of their output, so I can't really comment there.

I avoided stuff like The Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy but clearly just off clips and the trailers you can tell that they're in 2 completely different dimensions tonally. Yet they still manage to co-exist in the same universe.

Even going back to phase 1 which I did see Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Thor and The First Avenger were also very diverse from each other. Even though they had one general underlying formula which they all adhered to (which was arguably the flaws of the phase 1 movies) and again co-existed in the same universe.

As somebody who doesn't particularly care for Daredevil, the success of his series has made me super excited for Cage and Iron Fist's shows. I get the complaint about Cage being over-the-top to fellow people of color but I don't think he'll be that exaggerated in his series.

It's a toss up between Iron Fist and Jessica Jones for which one I'm more excited for. Don't particularly care about Luke Cage, either, to be honest. I'll check his series out, though.

I didn't think anybody was looking forward to Jessica's show. I didn't watch Alias and the character has been a nuisance in Avengers comics for the last decade. I see her show being the most disturbing if they get into some Purple Man sexual assault territory.

I haven't really followed Avengers for a long time, but I really loved the Alias comic and the character there. I even like The Pulse, though it was obviously the lesser of the two series.

I read and own a lot of old Luke Power Man comics and the whole angry black man thing is far over blown. Luke Cage is not angry all the time in those old comics and he had legitimate reason to be angry on many occasions (framed for crime he didn't commit, betrayed by his best friend, racist physical and mental abuse, ect). Luke Cage actually portrayed as more levelled headed and well rounded as character in some of those older books than he is in some of his more recent appearances.

As a black man I give his older portrayal a pass. You have to remember that the character was a product of the Blaxploitation boom of the seventies and was a couple of white guys attempt at mimicking the genre in superhero comics. It is easy to look at those books with modern eyes and dismiss them but they were a product of their time. There is also sorts of politically incorrect distasteful in older comics.

The sort lived Chicago era Luke cage solo series written by black writer Marcus McLaurin was the one I grew up reading that made me like Luke Cage.

That's understandable.

Trust me I real a lot of golden age and silver age stuff that would never fly today and that as a black hispanic sometimes has elements that make me cringe. Moments that don't just belittle people with black or brown skin but also people from latin and carribbean nations too (my family hails from the DR). I also read comic books within the context of the era they were created in so I get that they're just reflections of their time.

I also get that there aren't too many people in the industry who may look like you or me or come from similar backgrounds so there will be a lot of unauthentic minority voices in a bulk of the books I read. I touched on that in my previous post. I have the same problem with any minority being badly written BTW. I have the same issues with writers who clearly have never been around women in a social setting (be it a friend or cousin or their sister) and don't know how to write convincing female characters one bit. So yeah man I do understand; so that's not the problem.

It's just I've come across way too many Power Man features (more so ones made after the 70's as you noted) that make me go "c'mon son!"

More than there should be anyway. Especially since they're from time periods that should've been beyond that type of writing. With that said though if live action Luke is handled with care and respect I'd put up with him no problem whenever he pops up in something I watch.

The Cage showrunner and lead is black. I imagine some of the writers and directors for the episodes will be black. I doubt very much the Netflix show will portray black people in an unfair negative light.

A bullet proof anti-gun black superhero is all too sadly relevant when we see black men getting gun down on a regular occurrence.

Luke Cage Max by Brian Azzarello is easily the worst portrayal of Luke Cage and that was published in the 21st Century when you really think Marvel and someone like Azzarello would know better. Cage is that book was one of the most racist stereotypes of a black man I've seen in a modern era comic book.

How do you solve a riddle like this?

Albert & Bernard just become friends with Cheryl
They went to know when her birthday is
Cheryl gave them a list of 10 possible dates

May 15, May 16, May 19
June 17, June 18
July 14, July 16
August 14, August 15, August 17

Cheryl then tells Albert and Bernard separately the month and the day of her birthday respectively

Albert: I don't know when Cheryl's birthday is, but I know Bernard doesn't know either
Bernard: At first I didn't know when Cheryl's birthday is, but I know now
Albert: Then I also know when Cheryl's birthday is

So, when is Cheryl's birthday?

i personally dig Luke cage and I'm totally excited for his new netflix debut. Luke is a product of the blackplotation era like chamber said which gave us other heroes like Shaft and Hammer and dont have a problem with the character. he was a sign of the times and him teaming up with Iron Fist was one of the best books around! showing the friendship between people of two different worlds... and also seriously Luke has one of the best origin stories. which the recent rash of Police being in the news. Seeing someone getting framed for something they didn't do and the being in jail with a crooked guard who sabotage your ass is hella more "real world" than dressing as a freaking bat!:woot: dig Luke!

Is anyone else going to pick up Archie vs The Predator? :hehe:

Are all those recent. The last I read of DD was when he was in control of some Hand ninja and he may have been a demon too?

Most of those are pretty recent outside the Frank Miller stuff which is from the mid-80s. Everything else suggested is at least 2000s, I'm pretty sure.

I haven't read any DD before.

With that said, I loved the show. I finished it last night.
