Robert Downey Jr. To Return As Marvel’s Iron Man

“I am Iron Man.”

Tony Stark’s famous closing line to the very first Iron Man film takes on new life today as Marvel is pleased to announce the signing of Robert Downey, Jr. to reprise the role of the “billionaire, genius, playboy, philanthropist.”

Under the two-picture agreement, Downey will star as Tony Stark/Iron Man in “Marvel’s The Avengers 2” and “Marvel’s The Avengers 3.” Downey is represented at CAA by Bryan Lourd, Jim Toth and Matt Leaf and by his attorneys Tom Hansen and Stewart Brookman of the firm Hansen Jacobson.

Downey, Jr.’s last two Marvel films, 2012’s “Marvel’s The Avengers” and this year’s “Iron Man 3,” rank as two of the top five grossing films of all time, collectively earning over $2.7 billion worldwide to date.

“Marvel’s The Avengers 2” is being written and directed by Joss Whedon. Featuring favorites from the first Avengers film and new Marvel characters never before seen on the big screen, “Marvel’s The Avengers 2” is slated to begin production in March 2014 and open in theaters May 1, 2015.

Best news so far today. Can't wait to see who else Marvel pulls in.

Great News! The rest will follow.

So between Avengers 2 and Avengers 3 there will not be Iron Man 4? If so, that is good news, that way Disney/Marvel can concentrate on other heroes. Just hope Iron Man or Iron Patriot/War Machine atleast have a cameo on the other Phase III movies.

Fantastic news! So Avengers 3 will most likely be RDJ's swansong in the role.. still, plenty of time between now and then!

This thought immediately came to mind. I think it's fine. I'm sure Stark will be at least mentioned somehow (the name Stark has been referenced in every MCU movie so far), but I don't think he'll have any substantial cameos. But you might be onto something with Rhodey, since Cheadle signed on for 6 movies I think.

Great to see RDJ put on the armor for the next two Avenger movies. Guess this rules out Iron Man sequels, or at least RDJ-fronted sequels. I think it works better this way, as IM3 had a sense of closure to it for the solo franchise.

So do I. I'm just glad that he is signing on for Avengers 3, since that might be the film they wait to use Thanos in. If Thanos is indeed in the third film, I'm crossing my fingers that the same cast will return. Well, Hemsworth, Evans and Ruffalo at least. A lot can happen between now and then so I'm hoping those three I mentioned don't drop out which would require a recast. I just want to see this current set of actors go against Thanos, after that they can recast all they want.

By the way, nice Sig!

Great news, hope they start putting the spot light on Cap or Thor (preferably Cap) and less on Tony now. But also glad to have confirmation rdj will be back for 2 more outings, even though I always figured he would be back

I'm still anti-trilogist. I just felt that IM3 brought a sense of closure to the character, almost to the point where it looks like he's hanging up his armor for good. (Of course he's not, and appearances in A2 and A3 support that.) But I don't look back on the 3 Iron Man movies and say, "Oh yeah, that was a trilogy that had a clear over-arching story." To me, it's still episodic.

I'm pleased and not pleased. Pleased that he's returning because obviously he's awesome but I was really hoping for some roster changes in the sequels.

By Avengers 3 I'd like to see at least two characters from the first movie to have been replaced by new characters such as Ant Man/Wasp/Black Panther/Ms Marvel etc.

A team of 12 Avengers just won't work and if we keep the same roster all the way through I think it will be pretty boring.

You may be right, but an Avengers roster without Iron Man would be pretty boring too. Who knows. Maybe Iron Man leaves the team at the end of Avengers 3, and you'll get what you asked for, just later.

Great news, Iron Man really puts the fun in these movies to bring in the GA. Until they can develop another breakout character to carry the franchise.

Great news.....

But I don't think this will be the end of a standalone RDJ ironman movie.

This is Disney we are talking about. If they can make a 4th pirates movies....they will find a way to fund the 4th ironman movie after Avengers 3.

This is awesome! glad they are keeping the core team in tact. It also mean Avengers 2 and 3 have a chance of breaking new records, no offense to the rest of the cast, but I think the film would have taken a major hit at the BO without Robert.

Now it's full steam ahead for the sequels!

The big three and Hulk to a lesser extent are really the most important cast members right now.

Glad they made a deal with Downey. I assume provided things go well and he does Avengers that will be his last Marvel movie.

I wonder if the deal precludes some type of team-up movie. Like not Avengers, but just say a Cap and Iron Man movie or an Iron Man and Hulk movie.

Stark & Banner on a Hope & Crosby style musical road trip. Either through New England or through Dormammu's Dark Dimension. Make it happen, Marvel! :awesome:

No clue, but the way RDJ loves doing fun stuff I wouldn't doubt he have some extra things he himself would want to do

Maybe I was taking him for granted, but I figured that RDJ would come back for A2 & 3 since the first Avengers broke records last May. Still nice to see it confirmed though.
