Joker "The Joker" in development with Todd Phillips and Martin Scorsese attached? - Part 2

Well, it's one of the contenders with the highest odds and chances according to Oscar predictions. I think this one could be the second cbm nominated to BP.

But who knows, maybe they nominate endgame too/instead, considering it has the hightest box office of all time.
Well, the amount of money it makes at the box office typically does not factor into what is considered. Especially if it's a tentpole film with a massive budget.

This is the first CBM ever made that I think should be considered.

That Golden Lion Winner logo really makes it a serious contender, or ammunition for its supporters to call it a snub if it doesn't win - Shape of Water and Roma were previous winners

I think BP got the nomination due to it's significance for the ethinicity around the world, and yes made a billion bucks, Endgame could get a nom because it's a pop culture event that took over a decade to build, though Joker is a pop culture event itself too, when average international news around the world started reporting how certain Americans/Europeans think it could lead to mass shootings, and then when it didn't and is on its way to a billion and possibility more profitable than Endgame

joaquin really carries the movie - i don't think it would've worked without him. that performance.

the movie might be about american society, but i feel it's a universal tale too.

it's a cautionary tale - the failure of a society and how it + classism can give birth to people like the joker.
and it's unsettling because you question - are we capable of that kind of evil that arthur becomes?
do we have it in us too?

they pretty much used the concept of joker as a jumping off point to talk bout these broader societal issues.
i think people are connecting to that as well.

I read somewhere that the movie was boring until Joaquin returns to the screen each time, then I watched it and he's literally in every single scene, so I don't know what they were talking about lol, do they want him to be in every single shot? That'd be creepy lol

and you're right he basically discovered his family is a victim of mental illness and wasn't saved by the system and it reflect our society and it's interesting how most mainstream media is only interested in repeatedly reporting deadly events around the world without actually digging in for a long period of time to pick out the issues in the system that could actually prevent, or capture patients or psychopaths.

Which is reflected
in the climax on the show really, the whole crew were more interested in continuing with the coverage and interview, and condeming Joker on live TV, to show they have great morals, to get their anger off their chest, and to boost their image and ratings, instead of cutting it off for the police and play delay tactics to calm Joker down (like how Sophie was way more calm in trying to save her and her daughter, her cinematographer said Philips told her she survived), I mean that is very likely to happen in today's world

According to some prognosticator the money it makes matter something. Not THAT much, but it gives the film presence. And EG is the highest grossing film of all time, and from what i see, many of those got a nom.

Still, i think EG has 5% chance of getting a BP nom. Not only because Marvel isn't that popular with many voters, but because i, personally, don't think it deserves one. Only cbm that deserves to be a contender this year is Joker imo.

i rewatched some of batman '89 - jack nicholson's joker is actually very morbid if you think about it.
he's talks to dead bodies, and props up these dead models for his commercial.
he has the highest body count of all the movie jokers and he clearly enjoys murdering people.
but it's played out in a "cartooney" way so you're not as disturbed by it.

phoenix's joker probably killed the least people of all the movie jokers but it's done in such a realistic way, so it's even more unsettling and creepy.

i think it's also because arthur fleck started as someone who is struggling to be a decent human being and becomes this monster over the course of the movie. it's a stark contrast.

jack napier was an evil bastard from the beginning.

lol, I still can't believe Aquaman made that much money.
Its probably due to Superhero fatigue... Oh wait..

Why cant you though ?

Great visuals , great action and a unique fresh movie. Whats not to like ?

cause Aquaman is usually the joke character and made fun of

So $100 million to go to join the Billy Club.

It'd need to stay in theaters for another month and average about $25 million a week. Not sure that's feasible, but you never know. It's defied expectations left and right.

‘Just Mercy,’ ‘Motherless Brooklyn,’ ‘Joker’- The Contenders LA – Deadline

Even two of the creative forces behind t the dark and violent Joker cracked wise about keeping up with the film’s star, Joaquin Phoenix, and his wild penchant for “spontaneity” on the set, including occasionally dislocating the props.

Production designer Mark Friedberg, who joined costume designer Mark Bridges onstage, noted that Phoenix “knocked a lot of things off of walls,” but said the designers managed to adjust. “We just got bigger screws.”

You guys think we’ll get a sequel? I’m leaning towards yes. But I don’t think it’ll be announced until a little after the oscars

According to many websites, this is a high contender for BP, so i can see WB trying to convince JP to do a sequel, or at least make more films with similar style.

@8ulk87 I am with you on not getting my hopes too high for a billie. Mostly because I want to celebrate whatever it lands on at this point because it's no small feat. Although, we have to admit now that the international gross is exceeding my estimates from last week. Admittedly I was being conservative with the international estimates to begin with(I wanted to be cautious). Jokers international drops have been way less than half every week since it's release. But in my estimates (seen below) I still cut them in half every week(to be on the safe side):

Ok so... I really want this film to make a Billie! And I think it could but I have been looking at the numbers and it might fall just short at $969 million depending on the drops. ...And this is just a guess.

So I was looking at the comparison chart on Box Office Mojo between Joker, Venom, and Logan. I am able to view it the old school way because ever since Box Office Mojo(BOM) made those stupid updates, I refused to close the window I had open prior to the updates because the old BOM website just had more details. Anyway, needless to say, the joker numbers I have on that chart stops on the 21st because BOM updated the next day. So looking at it Joker, it's 4th domestic week is comparable to Venom and Logan's 3rd domestic week.

This weekend's 18.9 box office total is slightly stronger than venom and logans 3rd-weekend box office total. and that counts as jokers 4th weekend btw which is a good thing. So it should end its 4th week around 23+ million like how venom and Logan ended their 3rd. And if things continue like this chart domestically it will go on to gross:

  • 14 million week 5
  • 10 million week 6
  • 7 million week 7
  • 3 million week 8
  • 1 million week 9
And so on and so forth by the end of its domestic run, it should gain an additional 40 million give or take for a +/- $317.5 domestic total.

Now if we look at the international numbers in a similar way, and I am no expert by any means, This is just a guestimate. It just ended an $80 million week. cutting it in half every week from here:

  • 40 million
  • 20 million
  • 10 million
  • 5 million
  • 2 million
  • 1 million
That adds up to $79 million give or take. when you add that with the 40 million that should be made domestically and the 850 million already in the bank, that adds up to $969 million

Now I hope it will make more, but I am not 100% certain it will crack a Billie. Either way, wherever it lands we should be happy. And I sure hope it cracks a billion Gitesh Pandya sure thinks it has a good shot and he is WAY more experienced at this than I will ever be. I was just doing peabrain math with no true understanding of how things work.

It appears now, that as of Thursday US time, Joker has already made around $30 million internationally since last weekend. My projection for the full international week(including this current weekend) was $40 million. At this point, it looks like it is going to exceed that by a lot if I am understanding the numbers right. The idea of it being able to reach a Billie sans China is becoming a stronger possibility. This is some nail-biting ish right here lol.

Well any chance Terminator had of stopping Joker is dead. The movie is awful anyways but it is straight up bombing last I saw. (especially overseas) Joker's legs should still hold...

I don't think Phoenix is the one they need to convince, he's already expressed interest, I think they need to get Phillips on board, I don't think Phoenix will say yes without Phillips.

Damn, it's already at $934? I thought it would tap at around lower $900. Looks like it still has a good 1-2 more weeks left.

I dunno, I was doubting a billion, but it may just hit it. We'll see....
I think they may keep it in theaters through the entirety of November.

If it gets 40 mil next week and 18 the week after then it'll only need another 8 million by the third week. Seems doable tbh.
