Joker "The Joker" in development with Todd Phillips and Martin Scorsese attached? - Part 2

It would be cool if Todd Phillips made the sequel about Batman battling The Joker, and just called the movie Bat-Man. Since this would be more Elseworld-ish, keep it in the same vein of being ultra grounded, and have Batman be way more realistic than even Nolan's. He wouldn't have a traditional Batsuit, instead, he would have combat boots, kevlar vest, a black trenchcoat instead of a cape, and a leather cowl...short ears. Nothing too fancy. His "Batmobile" would just be something like a 70's black Chevelle SS. Keep it an R rating, and let Todd Phillips do his thing.
He's a billionaire. Why wouldn't he have fancy and high tech stuff?

Because it's more of an Elseworld, and that's how I envision Batman in this Todd Philips universe.

I would be really interested to know what they meant by "one film is not enough time to tell the psych" yet not wanting to do a full blown clown of prince film. Unless they want to do another telling/account of the origin story, which I don't believe will be the case.

I get why they wouldn't wanna do a pure full blown joker film by himself that's why I think he needs to have an "antagonist" like Riddler, or Batman etc to have an actual arc, have his views challenged etc and if they do introduce another mentally ill adult character called Bruce Wayne/Batman in this world the commercial side of things is gonna go nuts!

The sticky issue right now is that there's a film from Matt Reeves called The Batman about to film in a few months time!

Batman as a figment of Arthur's imagination. Something more bestial and demonic. Like how Joker sees Batman in Arkham Origins.

As far as sequel goes im gonna be happy with either of the 3 options.

Not having a sequel and be a one off.
Having a sequel in the same universe as Pattinson's Batman.
Having a sequel with Batman and all but on a different universe than Pattinson's Batman.

Im in for any option.

They will 100% do some sort of sequel after all this success thats for sure.

This movie is earning the money that Warner Bros. thought IT chapter 2 would make.

Just shows how clueless they are.. DC is their biggest franchise.
Another reminder that they should leave the output to the directors.

I don't think we'll hear any announcement of sequels until post Oscars, it'd be interesting to see if they still wanna announce that DC Black Label or they just let everyone pretend it "could" be in the same universe, or not.

I don't really want them to make a sequel anymore. Leave this film stay as a cult thing, like so many other classics (which i am sure this one will be among in some years). Making a sequel would ruin part of what makes this one special: a single piece of filmmaking studying a great character. A one shot story. Not just another comic book movie only done to set future sequels. Comic book fans need to learn not every movie needs a sequel. Taxi Driver, King of Comedy and The Network didn't need a sequel, and neither does this one.

I would prefer them to do other films with same style (JL Dark, Luthor movie, Deathstroke, etc) instead of just making this one like every other comic book project.

With the success it has had there's no way WB doesn't at least try to convince them to follow up on this somehow. Making nearly $1 Billion without China is pretty insane.
I forgot about the no China factor. That really makes this all the crazier.

No China, R-rated, No 3D, low budget without much CGI effects, not connected to any "successful" franchise and a slow burner character study. What are the chances of 1 bil. ?

On paper none, but very much like the character, Joker proved everyone wrong.

So many factors that should have been limiting its potential box office. I would have been impressed with $600m lol.

The funny thing is, before Joker came out, there were concerns that giving him an origin would ruin the character's mystique. The irony now is that a sequel to the movie might do the same.

Most movies rarely need sequels, and it doesn't mean a follow-up has to be a worst-case cash grab scenario.

Godfather 1 and 2 perfectly stand alone as their own stories, but they complement each other so well. I think both Todd and Joaquin have their head on straight with regards to this character they've created. If a sequel goes through I doubt it'll be the kind of movie people are fearing.

I don't think making a sequel is a good idea.

exactly Joaquin recently said the idea of doing a sequel because this film is successful is ridiculous

only way they do a sequel is if todd and phoniex feel like there is a compelling story to tell

Yeah, like how would it even work? I think the appeal of "Joker" is that it was a character study that involves a transformation (of sorts) on Arthur's part. Gotham was his antagonist. If the first movie ends with him becoming the Joker, where can you really go from there? What's the hook? Because we now know who he is, and what he's capable of. And I don't see this Joker ever turning into the "clown prince of crime".

Yeah, Joker as a villain needs Batman, and I think neither Todd Philips nor Joaquin Phoenix want to go there.

Interestingly, Martin Scorsese gives the same reason why he was not that interested in directing the movie (to him Arthur was more interesting character and he wanted the movie to tell his story and show his transition into Joker and stop there) though he liked the movie and he calls it as remarkable.

Martin Scorsese Considered Making ‘Joker’ for Four Years but Couldn’t Crack Comic Book Story

The fact that this kind of film will crack a billion WITHOUT a release in China is still pretty mind-boggling to me. A Joker film with no Batman and virtually no action.

The film's success isn't only due to The Joker being a popular existing character, although that is certainly a big part of it. But this film and story has clearly really resonated with people all around the word. Word of mouth must be super strong and people are going back to see this multiple times.

It was simple curiosity that got me to the theater. I wanted to see how they'd do an else-world standalone Joker set in the past.

I think it's the only film this year that's not Avengers Endgame that's gotten into the zeitgeist.
