Joker "The Joker" in development with Todd Phillips and Martin Scorsese attached? - Part 2

The only sequel I would want is the rise of Batman through the eyes of Joker. That could be fun.
That's how I'd want them to do it, if they do a sequel they should stick with the Joker's unreliable, twisted point of view, it could even be made ambiguous whether or not Batman even exists at all, or if it's just how Joker sees anyone/anything that poses a real challenge to him. I would not want to see Phoenix's Joker against Pattinson's Batman, this version of the Joker necessitates a very unique take on Batman from Joker's perspective, not the kind of take on Batman that we'd get in an actual Batman film.

Ya the options they have

1) take the money and go home
2) make a sequel with Batman
3) make a sequel without Batman, just Arthur upgrading himself to be Joker in his prime and hurts a lot of people
4) make a sequel with Joker going to war with Riddler or other villains etc
5) have him as the villain in Matt Reeves' Batman

A sequel with Joker's POV on Batman would be really interesting like others said, it'd be a batman from this Elseworld, but we're kinda stuck with Matt Reeves' franchise, I doubt he'd want to have another Batman in a billion dollar franchise when he's launching his own Bat franchise.

We also might have scenes where Bruce and Alfred verify the events in the new film and origin film, what's real what's not etc

1) That would be my preference
2) I think a Batman "Joker" movie would have to be quite different. I can buy a madman in makeup in this Gotham, but not Batman. Joker is a grounded movie. He wears makeup, but he spends most of the movie just shooting people.
3) I think this could also work, but to me, this would likely need to be a Joker on the run type of movie. I don't see this version of Joker with accomplices, or being a criminal mastermind. Actually, I've sometimes been curious where the Joker hangs his hat. Is he chilling out in abandoned warehouses, homes? Maybe a "Fugitive" Joker movie?
4) My least favorite idea. I don't want to see realistic takes on other villains, and just the idea of adding other villains fundamentally changes this version of the Joker.
5) I'm not sure that works without drastically aging him up.

I think based on what you said, you could almost combine 2) and 3), but swap Gordon for Batman, if Batman is deemed too fantastical for this world. More of an extension of the 2 cops in the first film, but with better resource and detective.

I wouldn't want a full Joker beating up everyone type of film though, lol, I got uncomfortable and sad watching Frank Underwood killing everyone in House of Cards S1, without a good team to bring him down.

I think 5) would be quite interesting because Joaquin gets to play a different type of character basically, a lunatic 20 years more experienced and more mature, and he looks considerably older in the ending anyway, apparently he's early 30s in most of the film, which is like a very hard life lol, Joaquin's gonna be around 50 when/if he get cast as an older Joker too. I trust Matt Reeves vision/writing as well, though it might be a miracle for them to work together at the moment.

I would honestly prefer them making more movies exploring this version of Gotham with other characters/villains.

But I wonder if it would be possible to do what this movie did with the other villains? Joker works because, as I pointed out earlier, he's just a guy in clown makeup shooting people. The makeup and the fact he calls himself Joker is the only fantastical element in what is otherwise a pretty grounded movie universe. I think you'd have to do a completely different angle for each villain:

- The Riddler as a serial killer in a hard boiled 70's thriller like Dirty Harry or the French Connection. Two detectives (Bullock and Gordon) must solve a series of murders with riddles as clues

- Clayface in a psychological horror movie. Remove the physical transforming aspect, and focus on a much more grounded, Lon Chaney type of actor who is an amazing mimic and physical actor. Someone who can completely transform himself through the use of body language. Explore the seedy underbelly of Gotham's movie industry as Clayface murders an acting rival

- Two Face in a film noir. After the district attorney is horribly disfigured, he finds himself tracking down the people who did it to him

I find these are like the sentiment right after 2008 TDK lol, make every superhero and villain characters dark and realistic, 10 years we have gone full circle

If they really have/need to do a sequel, best angle to go about it imo would be to make it an adaptation of Brian Azzarello's Joker but in the context of this universe, set like 20 years after, Joker would be about in his early 50s probably and getting released from Arkham, Johnny Frost would be one of his cult followers, Batman exists but like the comic he's mostly in the background and we don't actually see him till the very end, etc

Also I feel like Phoenix would just suit that particular version of Joker well and it gives him an opportunity to give an almost entirely new performance

if they are bold and crazy enough to do a completely different origin story for Joker i'm all for it.

My vision of a Joker origin would probably be a little something like this

The way to do a sequel is combine aspects of Azzarello’s Joker and Arkham Origin’s depiction of Batman as a wraith-like figure from Joker’s point of view.

Basically Joker would be released from Arkham and he’d get to see the legacy he has left in Gotham, as he inevitably takes his place as the Clown Prince of Crime. All the while, Joker’s deteriorating mental state leaves the question of whether the antagonistic “Batman” is real or a figment of his imagination.

Once again, this could be a gritty character study, it doesn’t have to go full comic book. Look no further than Azarrello’s Joker. There’s the blueprint right there.

^ more or less what I suggested.

Plus, doing the Azzarello story gives the movie the opportunity to do the polar opposite of the first film ; where the first film helps us understand how someone can become a monster, this film would show us how important it is to NOT be that monster or look up to him. Perfect way to silence the "they made him too sympathetic" complaints.

I don't want a sequel but here's my idea -

It's Year One as Batman, Commissioner asks him a favor, to capture Joker who has run away for Third time from Arkham, Batman starts looking into Crime files given to him by Gordon, we get few Flashback incidents involving Joker's antics, showing how dangerous and unpredictable he is, finally in third act Batman manages to corner him as Joker is about to kill someone, but is not sure if he should get him back to Arkham or just kill him.

Joker manages to get away, Batman later finds that he was captured by GCPD based on the detective work Batman did to find out his hideout (Batman shared that info with GCPD).

So essentially every other typical Batman/Joker story in Batman's perspective.

We’re definitely in 2008 again with Marvel and DC both releasing zeitgeist piercing game changing films in the same year.

This time with Marvel finishing up and DC launching their latest superhero who's gonna appear in the next 50 DC Elseworld films and defeat Darkseid with a finger snap at the end

Greta Gerwig DC Black Film?
And from a Vogue piece with Phoebe Waller-Bridge:
She seemed thrilled to be breathing fresh air. New York had been a blur of rehearsal rooms. In her little bit of free time, she’d gone to see Joker, which she thought was “absolutely brilliant.” “I think the reason people got so uncomfortable is because it feels too true, too raw,” she said. “I was watching it and thinking to myself, God, if this came out a year into Obama’s time in office, I don’t think we’d be feeling as worried about it.
