Joker "The Joker" in development with Todd Phillips and Martin Scorsese attached? - Part 2

This is all moot if Phoenix's Joker dies at the end of the film. Just sayin'.

It seems to me that WB is pretty much set on this being a standalone film that will not have any sequels. If it's an enormous success, then great. They made a huge profit off of a $50 million movie. Stick it in the bank and then maybe explore other stand-alone, Elseworlds stories they could do.

It's silly to speculate on any implications this could have on Reeves' film when we have no idea if he has any intention of even using the character - much less in The Batman. But even if Reeves decided to use him in a theoretical second or third film, we're talking 5+ years down the road. It's a non-issue.

Agree with pretty much all of this... but it’s an interesting notion to spitball, I think.

It’s a strange old situation WB have managed to work themselves into!

The idea of it being a standalone doesn't bother me much. It might be a bit unfortunate not to see a great Joker go against batman (if this turns out to be a beloved depiction), but whatever. One great movie is better than a trilogy of turds anyways.

Joaquin finally getting his Oscar...he should have won for Walk The Line but here is hoping Joker finally gives him that big win

In any other year he would have won for The Master, in which he gave a titanic performance that is quite literally perfect. He had the misfortune of going up against Daniel Day-Lewis playing Abraham Lincoln.

Right, so a big question for me is...

...what the hell do they do if this film is a big hit? What if Phoenix is a massive success as the character, that everybody loves?

How on earth do they even think about bringing Leto’s Joker back?

And what about The Batman? Where does it leave Reeves if he wants to use Joker? A third version? Try to rehabilitate Leto’s, when Phoenix will always be the comparison? Or get a Phoenix in somehow, despite the fact it’s a totally different narrative universe?

It’d be almost better if this film does well... but not that well.

Leto’s Joker can easily be fixed in Reeves’ Batman. They can just have him pre-broken teeth and tattoos since it’s a prequel. I still believe Leto has it in him to deliver a great Joker given the right material.

I mean, honestly, I always assumed that this movie started as mix of ideas for King of Comedy and Taxi Driver remakes and then found it's way into becoming a DC film once someone at WB decided the film could be so much more. Kinda like how the MOS sequel snowballed into a freaking Proto Justice League film once someone went "Wouldn't it be cool if we add more Batman to this?" :funny:

This is what happened. Calling this “factually wrong” is also ridiculous, publicists and studies make stuff up all the time when they pull this, remember how many decades it took to reveal that Universal Solider was actually a He-Man movie?

This movie is sheer fluff. The purple suit is the only Joker thing about it

Why does he need to be sickly?
Why does he need to be week?
Why does he need to be Norman Bates?
Why does this have to he set so far away from Batman?

The answer-it wasnt a Joker movie until the costume department came in with a few yards of purple fabric. How can any of you be so nieve as to still drink the Warner Brothers Koolaid???

My analogy may be exaggerated but its relavant, just because one or two similarities exsist with a character does not mean its a movie about that character. Its lazy and ill-planned like everything else they have done. This is the American Godzilla of Batman Movies.

People need to stop seeing these movies so they get a handle on this.

Why do you guys think so many people stepped away from this over the years?

This is a ploy for people to use the “new and darker” card agian(all the Leto band wagoners jumped off pretty quick after Suicide Squad came out and they realized you cant judge a charatby its concept art)-Gotham News Flash-there is isnt and wasnt anything wrong with the Joker,he is dark, he is gritty, he doesnt need revamped, put an accurate depiction on the screen, write a good movie and call it a day. This is literally a reskin of some other thing.

No he can't and he won't...Phoenix to me is Joker now

This. For him to be worse than Leto, he would have to give himself a “damaged” tattoo in the middle of the movie or something. Leto is never coming back, and to that we say thank ya, praise the Man-Jesus.

This movie is supposed to be the start of the more "experimental" and darker tone of DC standalone films, correct? So if this succeeds, and Phoenix wins everyone over (and perhaps gets an Oscar nom) does he get included in a future Batman movie that's "canon" with Wonder Woman, Aquaman, JL, Shazam, etc.? I'm not so sure currently. This is supposedly in its own world, no?

this trailer is incredible & scream oscars all the way through, from acting & cinematography
i have the same feelin when i saw the trailer for bohemian rhasphody with rami malek
todd philipps kill it, now lets hope it's not just a well crafted trailer

can u imagine this joker alongside batman ? this could be bigger than life,

Follow-up thought - Phoenix was in negotiations with Marvel for multiple roles in the MCU, reportedly did not like the multiple picture clause. Should we take that into account here, as a sign that maybe this will be a one and done performance for him as Joker? Possible for sure.

Agreed. At this point it's already a given that Phoenix is 100x better than letoker and it's time for letoker to be in the ash heap where it belongs.

If Phoenix's Joker becomes loved enough and iconic, then to the hell with continuity, as we often say in comics.

In case he accepts, just put him against (Reeves) Batman toe to toe and never try to properly explain how he got there. Let it be a mystery, such is the nature of the character. Supernatural? Mystic? Superboy punched the walls of reality? Flash messed up timeline? Let the viewer theorize, if this ever comes to be.

We just enjoy the ride.

Yea. Phoenix doesn't do sequels. Whether it succeeds or it fails, it's a one and done

He doesnt strike me as the guy who would want to be in superhero movies or so.
He feels more like a guy who likes to do thrillers, dramas etc where he can really get into the mindset of a character and do something deeply emotional.

See I shared this thought exactly. My feeling is that this becomes an iconic one and done performance for him in this Joker persona.

If that's the case, does that make Joker untouchable in the Reeves Batman movies moving forward? Considering we've had two Jokers now within such a short time span already (Leto and Phoenix) perhaps it's time to solely focus on other Batman villains and bring them into the spotlight. (which is already rumored with the reports of Deathstroke previously and more recently Penguin and the Court of Owls)

Could be a while before we see Joker again. (and fittingly so if this performance proves to be as memorable and iconic and we think and feel)

Well, I think the thing we need to consider here is that he was in talks for this stuff. I remember a rumor that he was also considering playing Luthor in BvS. Now, a character like Luthor could potentially be a one-off (though he shouldn’t be), but he had to know that Dr. Strange would have been a multi-picture deal when he first discussed it with Marvel. He ultimately backed out (and I’m glad he did, because I think Cumberbatch is a much better fit for that character), but it sounds like he’s at least been open to playing a character more than once if the situation is right.

Anyway, I don’t think this Joker will be seen again after this film but if it’s huge and WB decides they want to use the character again, maybe there’s a chance he could come back.

Also, a final thought. Phillips said something about some of the reporting on the film being wrong, didn’t he? Is there a chance that maybe that one guy isn’t playing Thomas Wayne and that kid isn’t Bruce after all? I remember seeing that dude’s face on a political poster that said Wayne for Mayor or something but I wondered if it was fake because the name was misspelled.

It’s kind of a fitting that all the cinematic Jokers so far have only been performed once.

What will they do if this version of The Joker survives the film is a major success?

Then I suspect they will decide what to do at that point.

It's likely a standalone, but I think we need to have some patience. Whether we see this version of the character again in another film should not be the primary concern here.

Studios should do this more instead of announcing cinematic universes and sequels before the first movie is even out. Look at the embarrassing Dark Universe story.
