In the comics was The Joker ever portrayed as he was in The Dark Knight? In terms of anarchy and what not.

I'm going with the super obvious answer but The Killing Joke features a Joker who tries to prove points by breaking down heroes and causing chaos.

It depends on what you read. DC's so all over the place its insane. There is no set portrayal of the Joker. Sometimes he's a real threat like in TDK and sometimes he's bafoonish almost in a loser like way.

I guess its hard to find that mix but I guess you would need to find the Joker writer you like and stick with him. If you're looking for a great starting point pick up the Soft Targets arc of Gothem Central. Its the best Joker story I've read in yeras, at least at that time. Brubaker always rocks anyway.

That's hard to say. Perhaps in the next movie Ledger's work would have built an own "utlity belt" :hehe:

Did you ever see the 60's eps of that? It was almost word for word from the comics. (Batman 73)

you have to be a lot more specific. but to answer your question the Joker as a force of chaos or anarchy is hardly new to the film. Most Joker stories have at least a couple of references to that kind of idea, a line of dialogue or something. Some focus on it more than others such as A Killing Joke and Dark Knight Returns. If you want to read a joker that's more similar to the movie though try the Gotham Central: Unresolved Targets tpb or the Batman Confidential Lovers and Madmen tpb

Lovers And Madmen. There is a panel in it where they are breaking into a vault I believe, and with how bored he is with life, he just starts shooting to get attention so he would have some excitement, which leads into a big shoot out between Pre-Joker and the thugs.

Killing Joke is hardly anarchistic.

here are some jokers I know

the first two joker stories showed him as a thief and a murderer killing rich men and criminals and anounce his crimes to the public

the frank millier verison showed a more serious joker comiting sex crimes, attempt to posion the gotham resoviour, kill a whole audience and even kill himself

The man who laughs show pretty much the orignal joker onlt he doesn't rob anything

the five way revenge have him killing thugs who pretty much betrayed him

Arkham Asylum:a serious house on serious earth have joker having a different personality every day

killing joke is preety much what every one says

he's always been a crimnial/ thief/ murderer

aand he's been potrayed as anarchistic/chaotic personality, but only in later versions, like the 70's to today

You're right, shooting and crippling the daughter of the police commissioner and then kidnapping and torturing him is not anarchic. :hehe:
no that is one of joker's great moments. he went on cross contry killing spree spelling his names with states, came back from the dead many times kill robin the 2nd, and even had the powers of m-dog. Plus In Killing Joke Joker took off Barbara's clothes after he crippled her and took pictures of her and showed to the police commissionern when he was kidinapping and torturing him. I read somewhere the joker bombed a school while class was in session, scared Harvey Dent, killed a girl scout, and killed a bus full of people on a

No that isn't anarchy. Anarchy is causing chaos, freaking out the whole of society. I think Batgirl getting shot in the stomach would have had a small paragraph in the paper somewhere, it would have hardly sent the outside world into a frenzy

Throw a brick through a Government building window = Anarchy tendencies
Shooting someone in the stomach to send their dad insane = Not anarchistic tendencies

Joker kidnapping all the babies in No Man's Land.

The Man Who Laughs

While you aren't incorrect an anarchist is a chaotic person who uses lawlessness and disorder against an authority. Kidnapping and torturing an authority figure (Gordon) classifies itself as anarchy. It does not only have to be on a large scale to be considered anarchy.

The modern Joker is not that enjoyable. There are better characters than a guy who can be written as the writer likes it because he is "insane" and "re-creates himself every day" and has "super-sanity" :whatever:

"Slayride" was quite cool. :hehe:

I dunno but the Joker was always causing a great deal of pain....example: Commissioner Gordon's daughter Barbara (Batgirl) if I recall....Joker shot her in the back, which paralyzed her and she ended up in a wheelchair.....(Birds Of Prey) also a WB short lived television series.

The Joker is amazing, it's pure and simple. the movie was pretty much all of his comic insaneness mushed together.

So yes. He is insane.

And i love him. lol.

i think there is a resurgence in the character ONLY becAUse of the movie...

it will fade, but the character's greatness will never die!!!!!!!!!!!!

Of course it will never die.

Even if the joker dies they'll bring him back.

Remember? They were going to kill him in the very first comic...

anarchists can also be very pacifistic, so going out and killing babies or shooting someone doesn't mean anarchy....

Anarchy is thought.... the true anarchist position is using your brain to get the better of society (i.e government)

the only reason there is any correlation between anarchism & violence is because SOME ANARCHISTS take direct action a little bit too far...

anarchism is deeply rooted in politics.... just because the joker is protrayed as an agent of chaos, doesn't mean he's an anarchist....
It just means he's insane...

to be an anarchist, you have to contribute to society as much as you take away from it...

it basicall means free thinking w/o the limitations that society holds people down with (sexism, racism etc.)

I FAIL TO SEE HOW A COMICBOOK CHARACTER LIKE THE JOKER is anarchist....

he's a criminal....

he's insane

he's ruthless

he's chaotic

but he's no anarchist

AND NO ONE SAY that chaos & anarchy are the same thing... if you think that, go read some Chomsky or go research Proudhoun

this thread should take note: INSANITY & pathology doesn't have anything to do w/ ANARCHY
