The Joker Thread - Part 1

DC/WB want Leonardo DiCaprio as the Joker for the stand-alone film:

"This plan was not met with applause in all quarters: Insiders say Jared Leto, the actor who portrayed the Clown Prince of Crime in last summer's Suicide Squad and is slated to reprise the character not just for a sequel but for another spinoff movie (with DC villainess Harley Quinn), was caught off-guard by the plans. Leto is said to have made his displeasure with the notion of multiple Jokers known to his CAA agents, and rival agency WME has been using the concern to court him."

Continuity means **** now, it's official.

DiCaprio as The Joker would be a huge get, but I'd say it's as likely to happen as me getting the role.

They also said that when Margot Robbie and Will Smith were offered roles in Suicide Squad.

Robbie was still a bit of an unknown (Girl from Wolf of Wall Street) and Smith who is more likely to do a film like SS than DiCarprio who spent the last 4-5 years trying to do Oscar nominated features.

The fact that he finally won an Oscar might make him more open-minded to tentpole projects such as this. Might.

Still, it's not like he's completely averse to blockbuster films (Inception) or villain roles (Django Unchained). But they would really have to knock it out of the park with the script for this to even be a remote possibility. The Scorsese connection wouldn't hurt, but even that isn't set in stone yet.

If Scorsese doesn't sign on the dotted line the project takes a major step back in terms of expectations. It's gonna be a funny anecdote if this Elseworlds crap doesn't happen at all.

Something that I felt I had to do (considering most of the latest news)... Enjoy :D It's 99% Joker filled with a lot of DCEU-related information and a special emphasis made on Jared Leto (every single medium is represented). Took me to a very special place, this project (couldn't do it without such talents as Jay Nelson & Mark Hamill).

I'd imagine that if this goes ahead with DiCaprio, Leto will tell them where they can stick it. Wouldn't blame him, either.

This.

Though I think from a career standpoint, it's unlikely. Unless Scorcese had a script he adored, and was directing VS producing, or something along those lines. Or Leo himself was directing, perhaps.

But in terms of being associated with the role...Ledger is hardly a distant memory, and is pretty much known for the role, as is Nicholson. Leto got a lot of flack for a misstep in the portrayal. I can't see Leo wanting to risk it.

Still, even if they're looking for that caliber of actor for any of these films, it's a solid sign. Heck, looking at actors the caliber of Jared Leto was a good sign.

I've heard people today say Leto just needs to suck it up. The reality is this isn't what he signed up for. I'm betting he drops out if this elseworlds movie goes ahead.

If Leto drops out there would be like a lot of good actors shooting for the role, the comparison will be with Leto's Joker instead of Ledger's.

But this movie might not happen for a long time, if it ever happens.

It's not a deal breaker if it does happen but I'm kind of still hoping Leto stays on board rather than drop out because of the Elseworlds thing. I'm still interested in seeing what he could do with the role under the guise of a director who better understands the Joker & with a better script at hand.

On the other hand, in the meantime maybe Leto should consult with Bill Skarsgard? :D

Leto responding to people who don't like his performance.

“Was I focused when doing all of these scenes? Of course. You’re stepping into big shoes. Look. You work the way you work. I work the way I work. You can kiss my ass if you don’t like it. I’m talking to the public. You know.”

I never saw the film, but I did watch various scenes with Leto's Joker and I didn't like it.

And you can kiss WB's ass if you actually want the role back , not that you deserve it....

He doesnt say we can kiss his ass if we didn't like his performance. He said kiss his ass if you don't like the way he works. That's fine. He's a good actor who didn't deliver a performance that I loved for ONE character. I liked a couple of scenes with his Joker and I see potential to correct things, even though I don't think he will change anything once he plays the character a second time. He's a bit pretentious as a person but I don't mind the way he works.

If he said kiss my ass if you don't like my Joker, I'd say screw you Jared. I don't think he meant that.

Leto voicing his displeasure with the future plans of multiple Jokers? That reminds me of Nolan not liking multiple Batmen on screen when they were planning a Justice League during TDK. I get it. But Dicaprio or a Gyllenhaal as Joker in a stand alone ? Taxi Driver style? That sounds amazing. As long as it makes sense.

Hahaha Ratner. That's going to be a hammy disaster.

Jared Leto is a good actor, it's a shame he wasn't cast as another Batman villain. I think he could've been a good Riddler. His Joker is just not that good.

I think Leto would be a great fit for a TDKR-style Joker. One that is more controlled and calm and not so manic and over-the-top. Play it creepy, basically.

You're actually right. His performance in Blade Runner 2049 (from what I've seen) really reminds me A LOT of Emerson's Joker in TDKR.

I also think that Leto's Joker visually resembles TDKR Joker more than any other iteration.

Honestly, watching that one Blade Runner short with Leto, he definitely gave me some TDKR vibes. I was wondering if anyone else thought that, and I appear to not be alone, lol

Leto in Blade Runner seemed like he was doing a Jeffrey Combs impression. His mannerisms and voice anyhow.
