This is an appreciation thread dedicated to the greatest Batman villain of them all, The Joker. He is certainly my favorite Batman villain, and like with my fav Spidey villain Doc Ock, I'd like to start a fan thread for The Joker.

Discuss all things that is Joker. From the comics, to the cartoons, to the movies.

I'd like to kick off a topic which I'm sure is on alot of Joker fans minds, and that is Heath Ledger's casting as the Joker. How does everyone feel about that??

Personally, I think he can do it. Physically he's good for the Joker. So that's half the battle. As an actor, from what I've seen of him he is good. nd I know he must of done a hell of a good screen test for Nolan to hire him.

Great idea! I think Heath will be fantastic as long as they nail his look. I can't talk crap because Nolan and Bale are saying how great Heath will be. I belive in Nolan.

At last, someone shows an interest. I was beginning to think Mr J had no fans around here!

I too have faith in Nolan. He's been the most faithful to the comics than any other comic book movie director. And I like that. He respects the source.

Ok, favorite Joker moments in the comics. A few of mine would be:

-When Scarecrow sprayed him with fear gas in the Knightfall saga. And it had NO effect on him. He just laughed it off. The Joker fears NOTHING!!

-When he beat Jason Todd with a crow bar, and then said afterwards while his hands were dripping in blood "My, but that was fun. Kind of messy though" It's that kind of sick humour that I love about him.

-In the Long Halloween, on New Year's eve when he steals a plane and plans to kill everyone with some lethal gas, so he can kill the Holiday killer, he and Batman are fighting on the plane and Joker says "One question. At midnight do I get a kiss??" :joker:

Hey! I was just about to make a thread like this!

When talking about my favourite Joker moments, I can't fail to mention "The Killing Joke". I'd say it's the best comic book ever written.

And here's another awesome pic of The Joker, from "The Man Who Laughs":

I loved the joker in "Arkham Asylum". Not only was the art done well, his character was incredible. The first time I saw him in it I almost craped in my pants. That part in "Long Halloween" was great too, Doc Ock. But I also like all of Tim Sale and Jeph Loeb's Batman comics. It seems some of the darker comics such as "The Killing Joke" and "Arkham Asylum" is when the Joker is at his best.

Hey, welcome Keyser. I was hoping you'd see this thread ;)

Defo

The art compliments the dark and gritty story. I think this was a turning point for Joker too. Its where he was shown what he's really capable of. Prior to the Killing joke he was the psychotic madman who terrorized Gotham with his sadistic pranks and crazy schemes. Which was fine. But with this story, he finally stepped over the line and hit Batman where it hurt. He attacked a friend.

And here's another awesome pic of The Joker, from "The Man Who Laughs":

Great story. Very faithful to Joker's original story in Batman #1. My only gripe is that Joker wasn't in it as much as I would have liked.

Hey Ock, too be honest I thought you would have started a thread like this a long time ago.

Some Joker goodness

I know, I've been lazy. To be honest, I thought someone around here would have done it years ago. I mean its the Joker. He deserves a thread where he is the king :joker:

Sweet

I never read the Last laugh. Is it any good??

What do y'all think of the proposals that some fans have stated they would like to see in TDk, such as -
No bright colors, pale albino like skin, not chalk white. Dark green hair, almost black. Carved smile, carves smiles on his victims, is basally just a serial killer, Doesn't act "zany", etc., all supposedly to fit In Nolan's "realistic" bat-world
Myself, I think they don't get the Joker. As a matter of fact, Nolan probably gets it more than they do. I mean he's Hired Jerry robinson as advisor. and I put forth that there's no-one more qualified as an expert on the Joker than him.

Then those people do not want to see the Joker on screen. No bright colours, carves the smile on his victims, doesn't act crazy and zany??

That would be JINO.

I was very happy to hear he hired Jerry. Nolan seems to respect the comic books. So he should make the Joker exactly what he should be. There is no middle ground with a character like Joker.

Either you do him right or you don't.

Nolan also said in an interview that his two main influences on this interpretation of The Joker will be "The Killing Joke", and The Joker's first appearance back in 1941. So that means we'll be getting the Joker we know and love. And as for the whole thing about the white skin and green hair, why is everybody agonising over the logistics? Why worry about whether its make-up, or he's albino, or if he fell in a vat of chemicals. I think it would be cool if it's never explained. He's just The Joker, and that's the way he is. Draw your own conclusions.

And here's a couple of cool manips of Heath Ledger as The Joker:

The Joker wasn't very zany in his first appearance. I think Nolan might be taking his lust for killing his victims with style from that one. And hopefully taking the Joker's witty, zany insanity from the Killing Joke. Its one of Joker's most psychologically powerful stories.

As for the manips, I like the 2nd one the best. His hair is not green enough in the 1st one, nor are his lips red enough. Not to mention no purple suit.

I, as of recently, just got interested in the Joker. Can't wait for the movie.

You just got interested in The Joker, eh? Well, if you haven't already, check out "The Killing Joke". That will get you A LOT more interested. :joker:

I think they have been attempted before, but not lasted very long. let's see if we can make this one just a little different. They obviously didn't have the right people before.

Sweet

Ashamed to say I have not read it either.

As far as Joker in TDK, I don't want to see an origin for him. I want it to be left up to our own devices to draw a conclusion of where this man came from. With Nolan saying he's drawing from The Killing Joke aswell, then it leads me to believe we may some kind of origin story for him.

Plus, who thinks he's going to go the Babs Gordon route and paralyse Rachel Dawes?

I'll make it work. Like the Joker, this thread shall not die :joker: :hq:

Ugh, I hope he doesn't do that. It wouldn't have the same impact as Barbara's crippling did. Joker trying to prove a point with Barbara and her dad. There's no reason to cripple Rachel. Anyway, I don't think the fans care for Rachel nearly as much as they do for Barbara, who has two things going for her:

1. She's Gordon's daughter
2. She used to be Batgirl

So she's special to both Gordon and Batman. Its a double whammy. No, presonally I hope Joker just kills Rachel in his usual theatrical and nasty style.

I don't know, I don't think she's going to be just there as fodder for Mr J. I think something will happen to her but it may be killing or it may be the paralysing. To be honest, Nolan strikes me as someone who has originality to him. So it could be something totally different.

I think she may strike up a relationship with Harvey, so then whatever Joker does to her, it will piss both Dent and Bats off.

Although, with Joker doing something to her, I hope it's sick, twisted and downright evil.:joker:

Oh I'm not saying she will be. I'm sure she'll have a purpose in the story. She knows Batman's identity now too. So that'll be interesting.

As long as she dies, I'll be happy. Joker has to kill someone significant in this movie IMO.

Sick, twisted, and evil is all he knows ;)

Just let her try and use her little stun gun on the Joker, she'll regret it

This is a great idea, Ock.

Allow me to cast my vote with the lot who feels The Joker should kill Rachel. The intense dynamic between Batman and The Joker needs to be firmly established. In the comics, it goes beyond just 'good v. evil', primarily because of the personal havoc that Mr. J has wreaked upon Batman. No better way to transfer that relationship on screen than having our dear Clown Prince of Crime murder someone who speaks to both Bruce Wayne and Batman.

Exactly.

There should be no crippling, only death. Joker has to kill a significant character, and a character who really wont be terribly missed. Rachel fits the bill nicely. Plus it makes it seem nastier that he murders a defenseless woman, who was Batman's childhood friend.

How would you guys like her to die?? Joker just shoot her?? Poison her with his smilex?? Lethal handshake??

I always thought it would be cool if the Joker used one of Batman's tools, like the batgrapple, changed it so it would be more like a "Joker-Grapple" and shoot it through someone. Not saying I want that to happen with Rachel, but to somebody.

I'd like for him to shoot her, but with some style; maybe even a slight resemblence to the scene from The Killing Joke. Someone had an idea awhile back about making the shooting a bigger spectacle. I'm babbling on the rest.

Instead of shooting Rachel when she opens the door, The Joker forces his way inside with a gun drawn on her. Joker goes on a dramtic rant about how she's limiting his fun and how he plans to turn all of Gotham into his stage. After Rachel noticeably feels she's about to die, Joker pulls the trigger only to have the gun seemingly revealed to be a toy equipped with one of those 'BANG' flags. Joker says "Gotcha" starts to laugh maniacally. Rachel looks upon this crazy clown with much confusion and some relief when suddenly Joker pulls the trigger again and the gun impales Rachel with the flag. She falls to the floor and Joker says "Gotcha again" and continues to alternate firing shots and saying "...and again ...and again". The camera is focused on Joker's nearly orgasmic face while he laughs hysterically, then flashes to Rachel's near-lifeless face and then pans out behinds Joker as he reaches into his pocket for something. The camera continues to back out through the still-opened door while the laughter continues.

Upon forwarding to the crime investigation scene, it would be discovered that Rachel was dosed with Joker venom before she finally died, contorting her discolored face into a grotesque smile. A blood-stained Joker playing card would also be left behind.

...or something like that, PG-13 of course. :joker:
