The current "Gauntlet" storyline in ASM and the tie-in villain stories in Web of SM will finally include the Lizard this coming February!

For those who might not have been keeping track of the Lizard's recent appearances (and aside from me, that's probably most everyone), old Lizzy hasn't had a current, in-continuity storyline devoted to him since 2006. That was the mostly-forgettable "Feral" storyline, seen in Sensational Spider-Man #23-27, where a meteorite stolen by Stegron the dinosaur man causes animalistic rages in certain humans and animal-based heroes and villains. Among other unlikely scenes, we saw Lizard get violently savaged by the Black Cat, so it wasn't one of Lizzy's greatest moments.

Since then, Lizard has only been featured in villain montages, flashback stories (X-Men: First Class,Spider-Man in Secret Wars), and oddball guest appearances in stories with questionable continuity (White Tiger, Spider-Man/Red Sonja, Marvel 1985).

So the "Gauntlet" storyline will involve Curt Connors and the Lizard around ASM #621, while Lizzy gets a lead-in solo story in Web of SM #5. I'm curious to see how Lizard might be "upgraded" for the Gauntlet storyline.

I kinda figured since he was going to be feautured in the January issue WoS :hyper:

I can't remember: Are they still running with the Connors-was-always-in-control-this-whole-time twist from a few years back, or has that been ignored since then?

That seems to have been ignored, thank god. Paul Jenkins really screwed up on several levels with that Spectacular SM storyline. One good thing coming from "Brand New Day" is Dr Connors once again not knowing Pete is Spidey, so that particular Jenkins mistake is now erased as well.

Zeb Wells and Chris Bachalo's Lizard story actually won't ship until May 2010. I know I'm bummed too as this story was announced to originally ship in Feb/March. So the Lizard won't appear in Amazing until around issue 630 or so.

However, the Web issue is still scheduled to ship in February.

G4's Attack of the Show in their "Fresh Ink" segment revealed (along with the best comics of 2009) some sneak preview pages from Zeb Well's Lizard story for Amazing Spider-Man coming out in April 2010. Apparently
Curt Connors not only completely succumbs to becoming reptilian (and yes, Chris Bachelo's updated version of him made me go :wow:) but apparently he'll now be able to control not only reptiles, but the "reptilian brain" within the human beings, causing people to succumb to their baser instincts.

Hmmm -- so the Lizard is being made to look more savage and dinosaurian (which was done with the Lizard-clone in 1995), and will have [blackout]the upgraded ability to influence the reptilian parts of people's brains, presumably making them act violently[/blackout] (which was done with a pheromone-power upgrade to the Lizard in Marvel Knights: Spider-Man in 2004).

That's a bit of a let-down.

Bachalo's somewhat hit or miss for me, I loved his art on his first arc with Wells, but thought it looked really cluttered in the Hammerhead arc. Gotta say it looks great there, though. Those details on the plot sound pretty interesting.

Hmm...well, in an interview Zeb Wells did with Newsarama last week he stated, [BLACKOUT]"there's a twist halfway through [the story] that sort of changes his [the Lizard] status quo." And now Blair Butler tells us that Wells told G4 that, "a shocking and devastating event will cause Doctor Curt Connors to be completely over taken by his scaly altar ego."[/BLACKOUT]

You guys think this means [BLACKOUT]Billy Connors is going to bite it?[/BLACKOUT]

Also I kind of have a feeling that at the end of this story, Spidey won't be able to cure the Lizard back into Doc. Connors.

By the way stillanerd, thanks for sharing the G4 segment.

Forgot to add what I think of Bachalo's rendition of the Lizard...It's awesome.

I was wondering about this. In the 2006 "Feral" arc, Curt was under the brainwashing influence of the meteorite rock and he injected Billy with the Lizard formula, turning him into "Lizard Jr". Billy was transformed back to normal, but of course the Lizard formula is still in his system.

True, so maybe their using that angle as a springboard for something to happen from going bad to worse with Billy?

And I just gotta say this since we're talking about this Feral arc, man what a disgrace, this story is horrible if you're a fan of the Lizard. The Black Cat wailing on Connors (Spidey's words), my ass. And it happened twice in the story.

Like you said, this story is mostly forgettable.

Hmm, interesting, looks like Black Cat going to be in this story too.

Thought I'd post these from over in another thread for all the Liz-o-maniacs. When Bachalo isn't trying to confuse the **** out of you, he's pretty good...

He is art makes me want to hurl.

Not liking the sounds of this. Sounds like they are rehashing again.

Is it me, or is Bachelo getting better? I use to really dislike his style until the recent Dark Avengers annual. It seems like he's using less lines or something.

I think Bachalo's art has improved enormously within the last two years. It looks a lot more clean and clear making it so one can tell what's going on in his panels.

I really like Bachalo's art!

By the way,
JustABill, love your current avatar!

While I'm waiting for the Lizard's appearance in Web of Spider-Man this month, here's a page from Lizzy's guest appearance in the humorous (and presumably non-continuity) Wolverine one-shot, Wolverine: Savage...

I always thought a Wolverine/Lizard battle could be pretty cool if handled correctly, but it was pretty much just played for laughs here. Oh well.

Actually on the letters page in Web #4 they show that issue #5 is going to feature the Vulture. I think Marvel decided to flip flop the villain stories in issues #5 and #6 around.

By the way, thanks for bringing the Wolverine one-shot to my attention.
