No idea if it was noticed previously but here goes...

Didn't you feel also a clear influence from manga and japanime on the film ?
I don't know who's responsible for this or if it's just an ensemble but I spotted many things reminding of famous japanese franchises.

Akira first : there was a lot of that with the bridge being taken apart and also the kiddy bedroom set for Leech.

DBZ : Iceman Vs Pyro was very much a batlle of kamehamehas.

DBZ and other Poke/Yu-Gi stuff (I suppose) : the whole stuff about levels in mutant powers, up to class 5 with Phoenix...

And it's maybe far-fetched but the tats on the Morlocks reminded a little of yakusas (+ many looked asians or polynesians)...

Was there other references you noticed yourself ?

OMG I'M SO GLAD YOU DID THIS!!!!

The last battle had me and my other otakuy friend rolling in the floor. DP's last scene, the whole post apocolyptic debris being swirled around a psyhic that's out of control. Totally Akira!

Ice vs. fire. COMMON. Its obvious that Ratner is a DBZ fanboy. I can't stand the series myself, but it did make me wanna scream, "KAAAAAaa-meee...," you get the drift.

Leech did remind me of the creepy kids in Akira. He was even shaved like them.

Yeah it looked Leech was around 13-14 years old but some toys in his room were for little kids.
It could mean Leech's been held here not long after the Worthingtons intro scene (but powers manifest at puberty, right ?) or that he aged faster than regular kids, like in Akira.

Agreeing also on Dark Phoenix, it felt also like a DBZ character or Testsuo charging up. :)

Lol, now that you've mentioned it, the Iceman/Pyro fight does remind me a lot of the kamehamehas in DBZ. :p

I need to start reading the DBZ manga again, lol.

and dont 4get about Dark Phoenix "Zombie" look. she basicly looks like ne Jap ghost figure. like Ju-on [the Grudge], Ringu [the Ring], or the Eye

You may be right !
It was more an obvious influence in Silent Hill but her face and eyes going dark reminded of that indeed.

i just HAD to sign and mention this, im pretty sure the xmen stories have been around a lot longer than animes, as well the visuals that go with them. so i say NO to this.

In most cases powers manuifest at puberty. But nightcrawler, for example, was born looking like that.

Actually, to be fair to the thread maker and those in agreement, some of the scenes and visuals they are describing are not really from X-Men continuity--i.e. the Dark Phoenix visuals, the tatoos on the bad mutants, etc. All of those are pretty much new to the X-world via the film and don't really stem from the comic books . . . so they could be influenced by anything, as a lot of it really isn't necessarily taken from the source material. Who knows? Visuals can be influenced by a multitude of things.

ok i can tell you've NEVER read an X-men comic...

first of all the bridge was inspired by one of the issues where Magneto did a similar act to one of the bridges in NYC

second the kiddy room for leech was ripped from the astonishing x-men comic featuring the cure, of course his was a boys room as opposed ot the comics girl

have you never seen pyro or iceman in action... ANYWHERE? lol

and guess what X-men in the comics do have levels, except level 5's are known as omega mutants

and the morlock tattoos... lol dont even go there

*sigh*
I stopped reading the X-Men comics around the Phalanx storyline, I couldn't find time, money or interest in reading the following issues (have in mind I'm from France, and at that point the publisher of the Marvel comics changed).

Akira in manga form was published in 1982 ; in anime in 1988.
Dragon Ball manga 1984, DBZ tv serie 1989.

It'd be pretty presumptuous not to admit japanime & manga influence over X3 or the X-Men comics (Madureira style, hello ?)

and guess what.. most of what you tried to compared has been around since the 60's just because someone has a "kid room" and a bridge breaks doesnt mean its ripped from manga or influenced get over it...

this is giving be bad nightmares of morons saying dock ocks tenticles were a rip off of the matrix:o

When I saw the Iceman VS Pyro fight I thought of Street Fighter not DBZ. Do we know which came first? Haduuukin or Kamehameha?(sp?)

The X-Men have been fighting with these super powers since the 60's, long before any of this stupid anime crap.

It was X-Men influence, not Dragonball Z influence.

*sigh*

/Nell2ThaIzzay hates anything and everything anime

Kamehameha came first

To say that american comics haven't been influenced by any foreign influences including manga is plain ******ed.

I also think to claim to hate an entire medium is very close minded

and its pretty close minded to assume anime thought of everything... when american comics spawned sooo much more then you will ever realise. to assume anime never borrowed or got ideas from american comics is completely ignorant:down :o

i see these comparisons as simple as an anime fan boy drawing straws and trying to find as many comparissons as possible because he knows the medium well

its like supes fans saying spidey ripped off superman by ripping open his shirt... like superman is the only superhero whos allowed to rip off his shirt?

If we're gonna be dragging years into this.

X-Men comics- 1963-Present
Enough said.

The first reconizable signature Japanese Manga was Astro Boy wich started in 1952. It was a national phenom before 1960. In 64 the anime premired.

So, um yeah.

It's not closed minded to hate an entire medium when you've been exposed to a good chunk of that medium and think it's crap...

I think it's closed minded that every ****ing video game ever to come out anymore has to be anime. Talk about over-exposure.

Well, without the international success of Astro Boy other anime like DBZ and Akira wouldn't have been imported.
