The New Ghostbusters - Part 8

I was LITERALLY saying to someone yesterday how I half expected to see Melissa McCarthy kick a ghost in the balls and the ghost’s eyes would cross...

And then this happens:

*sigh* Seriously. A kick in the nuts joke is as original as a loud angry black woman.

Kick in the nuts joke and horrible lookin CG Stay Puft. This looks worse and worse. Seriously why does Stay Puft look so bad.

Yeah....it's not as genteel and refined as the "This man has no dick!" joke from the original.

Stay Puft is a ghostly parade balloon in the movie. It's meant to look cartoony. It isn't the Destroyer form, it's just a goofy balloon of the Stay Puft mascot.

Why is Stay Puft Marshmallow Man even there? I mean i know WHY he is there, its a nostalgia trick, but why is he there as a ghost? that could be like a 5 second cameo for all we know but somehow this fan service is not helping them and i can't say i was excited seeing that.

Every callback, cameo, reference, in the movie is done in such a shoehorned, nostalgia driven, fan service for the sake of it way that it's distracting, annoying. But I am sure some will like it.

That's actually a perfect example of comedy that works vs comedy that doesn't.

That joke was actually funny and clever. Aykroyd makes almost a throwaway reference to Peck as "dickless" and Murray lands a great joke with perfect comedic timing.

Getting kicked in the crotch is low-brow slapstick. It's not clever and it's not funny.

I think the context of the scene helps. We have yet to see any of these jokes in a full scene. I'm sure that line would not nearly be as good if it was in the trailer with him just saying that.

Some classic movies are held up to an ideal that they never achieved. I see this in Star Wars all the time.

Ghostbusters comedy wise was often more subtle then that, none of the characters needed to be loud to be funny.

Well maybe there was some loud moments in the original but i can't think of them off the top of my head but i can think of several alone with the reboots trailers and tv spots.

Lots of hate for it, I dont expect anything much from it myself, but Im willing to give it a chance, at least theyre trying to make it somewhat different and fresh by changing the sexes, who knows

I'm hoping for a fun movie. It'll never top the original because I'm 33 instead of 4. I'll never get the experience of seeing it for the first time again. Though the first time I saw it I thought it was good, but a poor adaptation of the cartoon, thinking the cartoon came first.

If I laugh a bit, get to see a few awesome busts and find excitement in those climactic moment, I'll leave the theater smiling. So far I've had a few of those moments during the trailers and vignettes. Some jokes fall flat, yeah, but some have landed.

I guess my disappointment comes not from the fact that this looks like a lame remake of a cherished franchise, but the fact that the movie-going audience isn't demanding more from their movies.

So many people say what JangoNate just said. "I'm not expecting much. Some jokes land, some don't. I just hope it's fun."

They say it about Ghostbusters, about Ninja Turtles, about Spider-Man, about TONS of movies. Is it wrong to expect a movie with hundreds of millions of dollars behind it be better than just okay?

Not at all, though malingering won't make it any better.

Isn't that the whole point, though? Have some fun. I mean, if you only expect perfect movies, you are going potentially miss out on a lot of stuff you may enjoy.

If Ghostbusters is some highly vaunted masterpiece that you can't ignore when seeing this film, fine. But don't belittle people who actually interested in this movie. Is this going to be the original, no. Will it be a classic, probably not. But that doesn't prevent it from being an enjoyable time.

Movie making is an art, not a science. The amount of money that gets pumped into it doesn't guarantee quality. At times, I think people with low expectations enjoy things more.

If movies are art, this looks like Paint By Numbers.

That 'quoting' made me sound like an idiot and was not at all what I said. I basically said I want to laugh, see some good action, and have fun. As the post above said, to experience what blockbusters were made for in the first place. What I was saying is that I want to enjoy it and to enjoy it means it's more than ok.

I think the problem I encounter is that in these fan communiteies we have to always take sides against those who feel differently than us. We think in extremes. If it doesn't blow our minds it has to be garbage. And if we don't like something we hope it fails in spite of the fact others in our community might enjoy something.

I'm sorrg you don't like what you see. I do and all that this means is that we have different tastes. Not that one of us is demanding more or less from these films.

I just got back from seeing the original! It's so good to see it on the big screen from time to time. I was surprised to see that they actually showed a very brief shot of Sigourney Weaver's cameo in the BTS footage from the reboot.

Re: Quality of Blockbusters and summer popcorn flicks. I worked in Hollywood for a decade of my life. In that time I learned a lot about the industry and worked on some excellent movies, and some terrible ones. Did you know that each and every one of them was a labor of love and took hundreds of skilled craftsmen and dedicated performers. Filmmaking is such a collaborative effort and so much can effect the final product. The writers try and write a good script, the director tries to oversee the filming, the talent tries to put their mark on it, the studio comes in and mucks with things to protect their investment. Good movies are sometimes accidents, and horrible movies are a collection of tiny mistakes that snowball. This reboot was doomed from the beginning, and while I don't agree with every decision they made along the way, I'm confident that everyone involved did what they thought was the right thing at the time.

The result was enjoyable (to me). It was fun (for me). It doesn't make me a traitor to my favorite movie of all time. It doesn't make me an idiot for liking it. It doesn't mean that I don't wish it was spectacular like its predecessor...but let's face it, it never could be. Ghostbusters was a perfect storm. It was lightning in a bottle. There are parts of the reboot I absolutely loved, and parts that made me cringe. I'm also hopeful that with finished effects, a polished edit and final score and music it will impress me more.

There's a rumor going around

That the ending "Patty listening to an audio tape and asks the girls who is 'Zuul'" scene has been updated, now she hears the original GBs interviewing Dana.

Not sure if there's any truth to it, but that's the latest.

Doubt it, because throughout the rest of the film doesn't it present them as the first generation?

That wouldn't make sense without really reworking the hell out of the entire movie...not that it even needs to make sense I guess. It would be a really odd choice, considering This immediately follows Sigourney Weaver's cameo.

Yup, and one of the main threads that runs through the movie is the development and refinement of the proton packs, as if they are a brand new concept and technology.that wouldn't make a lick of sense if there was a first generation of Ghostbusters. Also the name Ghostbusters is created when Kevin answers the phone and can't remember what the organization is called. The logo is created in the subway by a graffiti artist that's essentially making fun of the questions he is being asked.

I really don't understand the hate for this? The trailers show a fun and good lucking movie. In no way can this be worst than Ghostbusters 2.

What is so bad about it? Is it because it's a woman cast?
