The New Ghostbusters - Part 8

Except they were offered and quickly refused. They specialize in "This sounds awful on paper" and they avoided this? Red flag from the start.

While they like to choose projects that are said can't be done, they were also burned out from doing 22 Jump Street and The Lego Movie back-to-back and then were starting on Last Man on Earth, meaning they didn't feel they could put their full effort into Ghostbusters. I do know that now that the Ghostbusters franchise is not a continuation of the first two films (which was still up in the air when they were asked,) their names are still being bandied about a potential male Ghostbusters film, but with them attached to the Han Solo film, I'm not sure they're going to do it.

I still believe that instead of an all-female cast, they should really have gone with a mixed cast (2 men, 2 women.) I think that a directing/writer duo like Lord and Miller could have worked well for a Ghostbusters movie.

One of the things that irks me about this particular movie is people who think the all-female team needs to happen. 'Girls need heroes too' is what I've heard a lot with regards to this movie, and whilst I agree with that sentiment the fact remains it's a statement made with the assumption that there are no heroes for girls already. Over the last few years we've had a bunch of female lead action heroes, or strong female action characters in supporting roles - Katness Evergreen, Rey, Black Widow, Scarlet Witch, Catwoman, Furiosa, Hit Girl, and Supergirl are just a few, plus a bunch of X-men characters. We can go further back to Alice from Resident Evil, the Bride from Kill Bill, Sarah Conner, Ellen Ripley, and Trinity from Matrix. Coming up we've got Jyn Erso, Wonder Woman, Captain Marvel, and Lara Croft. And that's just the ones I can think up off the top of my head.

Been listening to Midnight's Edge video from a month ago, and they make a good point why this Movie probably won't work. Paul Feig's strength is to make subversive parody Movies. In his words, no one would let him make a Bond or Bourne Movie, so he made his own and created Spy. And now that he finally got handed the keys to a main franchise with the Ghostbusters, instead of taking it seriously like he would a Bond or Bourne Movie and create a proper new installment in the Ghostbusters franchise, he's treating it like another of his subversive parodies.

EXACTLY. This is what I have been saying since this movie was revealed to be a reboot/remake. This is clearly a "what if the the original Ghostbusters were all women" parody movie, and that is why I believe this movie is getting so much hate and why I think that it will under perform at the box office.

Instead of making a movie with jokes, Feig's essentially made a movie that IS a joke. That's where the concept started, and they filled in the rest.

The original movie is a great comedy before it's "Ghostbusters" as we know it iconically. Feig is doing the opposite by making "Ghostbusters" and trying to make it funny. It needs to be a good movie first. It's basically the opposite of what we wanted.

If you notice in the original film, 99% of the jokes aren't about ghosts or ghostbusting... They're just good jokes that would work in any great comedy, but they happen to be in a movie about ghosts.

- This man has no d***.
- I'm going to go to her place and check her out.
- Look at all the junk food.
- You're more like a gameshow host.
- That's the bedroom, but nothing ever happened in there. / What a shame.
- That's gotta be some cockroach. / Bite your head off, man.
- Back off man, I'm a scientist.
- You're not gonna lose the house, everybody has three mortgages nowadays.
- Would you like a mineral water or something?

Feig's movie is relying on ghosts to be funny, with the possession scene, the dragon sitting on Leslie's shoulders, the ghost throwing up in Wiig's face. None of this stuff could happen in a regular comedy.

This is one of life's mysteries in how an 80's action comedy flick has a fandom that supposedly rivals SW and LOTR in anger and hostility.

I could be wrong, but I think that GB's fan base has grown over the years because of reruns of the REAL GHOSTBUSTERS animated series (which, IMO, was better than the movie) and the original movie frequently being rerun on TV.

One, that's a drop in the bucket. A handful of characters over 5 years and 100 movies isn't a lot.

Two, that wasn't the argument. The point is who gets to dictate when isn't okay to be reimagined in whatever way they want?

Look at that anger over the Harry Potter play in England with a black Hermoine. Who gives a crap?! It's not like there will never be another white actress to play her and there already was one. Race changing is a part of theater culture.

Ghostbusters can be anything. 2 men, 2women. A three man team. 4 women. 3 men and 1 woman. All could be Ghostbusters.

Just being 4 women didn't invalidate it as Ghostbusters any more than getting 4 terrible male comedians would make it a GB movie.

I dunno about parody movie but i am gonna take a guess and say the directors view on the original ghostbusters movie is basically that its a couple of male Saturday night live comedians making a supernatural comedy movie and its like you know what would be interesting? if we rebooted but with a couple of female Saturday night live comedians?

There are two possessions and they take up maybe 10 minutes of screen time.

One of the things I loved about the original is that the humor and horror were mixed so well. The comedy was adult. It was sarcastic,slick and dry. And the ghosts themselves were all kind of creepy. Clearly this was a movie not made for kids.
This remake seems to lean more towards slapstick and lowbrow laughs. And I understand CGI is a constant now but I'm tired of seeing so much of it,and this movie feels like one of those types of films.
I actually would've loved a new Ghostbusters movies with a different cast,either with men or women,and I loved Kristen Wigg(or is it Wiig?). But everything I've seen so far had failed to make me laugh,or be impressed at all. Plus,I've read that the director and some others have been badmouthing those who don't like it. Not exactly a good way to get people to see this. I'll probably watch it when it comes on cable but I'm not interested in paying to see this.

I think the thing is if they went with the mixed gender they would've been forced to shoehorn in romance subplots. Kevin is lusted after as a hot dumb admin but that's about it. I don't know if there's a male Dana here for one of them.

You ignore things like Ray's dream. Slimer. Pretty much the opening sequence. Possessed Louis. There is significant comedy related to ghosts and ghostbusting. You don't like what you see, that's fine. Everyone's tastes are different. But let's not twist the original into something that it wasn't just to make a point.

I could be wrong, but I think that GB's fan base has grown over the years because of reruns of the REAL GHOSTBUSTERS animated series (which, IMO, was better than the movie) and the original movie frequently being rerun on TV.

I think it was for my generation. Which is why I am kind of excited, because I see plenty of influence of the cartoon on this, in particular the ghosts.

Not sure about one particular busting job, but I'd imagine Kevin is Dana and Janine rolled into a hot dumb guy, sinc ehe's the receptionist, and then he gets possessed by the main villain.

I would have actually been onboard with a movie based on the Extreme GB cartoon. If anyone remembers that. The characters were quite likable and it had a darker tone in line with the original film. Most importantly it was a group of kids from Igon's class handpicked by him. Making it have continuity. Would have totally preferred that and I would have actually been somewhat excited as the original guys still would have had a minor role.

Exactly and another reason for this movie is to get a cash grab which they might not get with all the hate on it.

Well, to me the only funny thing in Spy ended up being Jason Statham. But that doesn't have anything to do with gender. It's just that the film didn't really do it for me, and from the trailers I'm not really looking forward to this, either.
