My review

Holy f*** this was insane. Timo Tjahjanto who's done Headshot and worked closely with Gareth Evans has done an amazing job on trying to keep the Indonesian action film genre going. To use an analogy, where The Raid and Raid 2 is like the Predator of Schwarzenegger's filmography, The Night Comes For Us feels like the Commando of Indonesian action films. The script isn't as sharp, but it makes up for it with some gruesome over the top action scenes. Some of the cast from the Raid movies are back like Iko Uwais, Joe Taslim, and Julie Estelle and they all deliver... especially Joe Taslim who's the star and the emotional centerpiece of the movie. There are a few new people who shows up and kinda steal the show like Hannah Al Rashid, Sunny Pang, and Zack Lee. It's got some great cinematography, music, and some interesting camera work to make it feel like a big budget blockbuster. Since there won't be a Raid 3, this movie is the closest thing we'll get to one. Overall, for my money, this is probably the best rated R action film this year.

Started this a few nights ago, couldn't get into it, but that might've been because it was like 2 in the morning and I was trying to settle a screaming baby.

Gave it another shot and while it definitely played better the second time, I think maybe this reveled in the violence a little too much for my tastes. Yeah, the violence IS very cartoony and OTT, but also very gross, but also I can tell I'm supposed to be enjoying the violence... so I dunno. I'm conflicted. But it gets better as it goes along for the most part, the action especially, and I can really respect that. It's certainly the best action I've seen in a while.

The story and melodrama did almost nothing for me (and the plot/character motivations don't make much sense if you think about them for more than a minute), it's just kind of a silly structure for the action to take place in, but at the same time, I won't lie, that final shot did get me a little bit. So some basic thing worked on that level, I guess. Anyways, yeah, I do think it compares favorably to The Raid movies, even if I slightly prefer those because I felt a little more engaged by them overall.

Good flick! It's not the best Netflix original movie for me (Private Life and now The Other Side of the Wind are ahead of it from this year alone), but it's certainly up there.

Vast improvement over Headshot. Julie Estelle had the best kill with that air conditioner.

This looks a bit like it's going for "The Raid meets Hong Kong John Woo", I haven't seen Headshot yet but I might give this a try, interesting to see the Iko dude as the bad guy.

"The Raid meets Full Contact"

Headshot was sorta decent. The opening is probably my favorite part... but this? this movie is that opening times 10.

This movie was awesome. Not as good as the Raid films from a story structured stand point, but the action sequences are amazingly brutal and very bloody and the pacing is relentless. If your a fan of those movies you should definitely check this one out.

8/10

Looks like I need to borrow a friend's Netflix for a week.

I can't believe i'm just now finding out about this deleted scene.
