From creators Steven Zaillian and Richard Price, The Night Of is an eight-part limited series that delves into the intricate story of a fictitious murder case in New York City. The series follows the police investigation and legal proceedings, all the while examining the criminal justice system and the purgatory of Rikers Island, where the accused awaits his trial.

The Night Of stars John Turturro and Riz Ahmed and was directed by Steven Zaillian and James Marsh. It is executive produced by Zaillian, Price, Jane Tranter, James Gandolfini, and Peter Moffat; co-executive produced by Garrett Basch, Nancy Sanders and Mark Armstrong.

Filmed in and around Manhattan, the HBO series is based on the BBC’s “Criminal Justice,” created by Peter Moffat.

First episode is now on HBO Go and On Demand.

I just saw the first episode and I have to say, this is season 1 of True Detective good (and what season 2 should have been btw). Acting, cinematography, and story is just incredible.

I do love Steve Zailian, I'm getting onto this ASAP.

Oh, that's good. Going off of the trailer, it feels like it fills that void since there's no third season of True Detective this summer and Season Two of it was sort of lackluster, in my opinion, so good that this is a suitable replacement for now.

Loved the 1st episode, really intense and gives you a feeling of claustrophobia.

I haven't watched it, I will wait until it airs. Good to know it was off to a great start. :)

Not bad, but I wouldn't put it up there with S1 of True Detective.

I wouldn't either, but damn was it still great. I still could have seen this as a season of True Detective though. Shame we never got to see Gandolfini in the Stone role but Turturro is just so damn good like always.

And the actor who plays Box. Stellar. What a great voice too.

I was about to say I've never seen him in anything before until I checked and **** you're right. He's in a lot of stuff I've seen. :funny: Good to see him get a main role here though. But yeah, this could have definitely been a season of TD, even the second season of TF where it plays on the idea of the idea of the detective. Pizzolatto said it doesn't always have to be about a detective and this fits into his idea that he didn't want to repeat the buddy formula. You got Stone, a lawyer and Box as the detective surrounding a possible murderer and investigating that. There's your three leads that Pizzolatto wanted and didn't completely work out.

I'll just say right now he didn't do it, but I'm sure they're gonna make me think the opposite over the course of the show.

Yeah at the very least this is what season 2 of TD should have been. I too think he's innocent but it's going to be interesting to see what actually happened when he was out cold.

I hate to say it but yeah, this was a better central idea than season two's which had a lot of terrific elements such as Velcoro, the location, the themes, imagery, dialogue, but in terms of overall concept, this makes more sense. Imagine Ray Velcoro (the best and most interesting character in S2) as the detective in this show instead of Box and Pizzolatto could have attained what he wanted with his ideas with this storyline.

I still love season two and hope for a season three and haven't given up on Pizzolatto, unlike some people online who were quick to dismiss him and treat him like a leper after one stumble but ****, this mini series looks to fill the void.

The premise of this show reminds me of something else. Can't put my finger on what it's called though. But this isn't new.

He's joined by 230 other characters, nearly all of them New Yorkers. The show's authenticity in this respect was important to director Steve Zaillian, who spoke of the city's role at a screening:

“We shot everything in New York. Every interior, every exterior, for 150 days. And it shows. You can’t fake it in Toronto. I’m really proud of that. I’m proud to have made a New York movie. We shot everywhere. We shot at the courthouse. We shot at the prisons. We shot in the subway.”

Zaillian added that "the movies of the ‘70s are my favorites... It was a conscious thing while we were making this."

Watched it again yesterday, and I cant help but think he actually did it (wondering why did he wake up downstairs in the kitchen instead of next to her in the bed)

I too feel the void this summer that is lacking True Detective and Hannibal.

Saw the preview and half to ask is
it worth getting invested in?

so the next episode is only next weekend? :(

Could be worse. TV critics were sent the first 7 episodes a couple of weeks ago and have to wait until the season finale like the rest of us.

Great first episode, kept me riveted even with his bad choices.

The BBC series that it is based off of had a second season with a new story, this could be HBO's replacement for True Detective.

HBO. It's not TV. It's blue balls.

Yeah. Naz's slew of anti-pragmatic choices after seeing the dead body were both infuriating and gripping. You know he's a good kid and you wan't him to avoid getting crushed by the legal system but him being a good kid led to him giving the police chances to pin the crime on him.

about 30 minutes into it... I'm in.

Promo for Episode 2

So good, had some Fincher Zodiac vibes.

I love seeing Mr. Robot and this respect and represent NYC so well...
