So is the Northman’s name Eric?
The Lighthouse is shot in black and white but Mr Eggers said this will not be the case for The Northman.
"The movie is too expensive [for that]" he said in an interview with entertainment website Collider.
Do you know what’s next for you? Are you currently working on something now, or do you know what your next thing will be?
BANG: When I’m done with press for The Burnt Orange Heresy, I’m headed over to Belfast to start prepping and shooting a film, called The Northman, which is Robert Eggers’ next film – the guy who did The Lighthouse and The Witch. That’s based on an old Danish saga of Prince Hamlet. So, that’s what I’m doing next.
What kind of character are you playing in that?
BANG: The old saga of Hamlet is what Shakespeare found and turned into Hamlet. I am the evil brother that kills my half-brother and takes over his kingdom and steals his wife. I’m basically Claudius in Hamlet, he’s just called something different here. The story is also a little bit different. It’s not Hamlet. This is more in the family of Greek drama, you could say. It’s gonna be so ****ing scary and bloody, and really heavy because they kill each other.
Boy Narcissus we haven't talked in PMs for a while. In the meantime, I shall do with reading Eggers' Nosferatu.

Hot off the surprise hit of his sea-mad mind-trip The Lighthouse, director Robert Eggers next sets his sights on The Northman, a Viking-era revenge tale. Back in October of 2019, it was reported that brothers Alexander Skarsgård and Bill Skarsgård would join the cast, marking their first film together since Bill’s 2000 feature debut, White Water Fury. Alas, some bummer news: While speaking to Bill Skarsgård about Netflix’s The Devil All the Time, Collider confirmed that the actor had to drop out of Eggers’ film due to scheduling conflicts brought on by the COVID pandemic.
Here’s exactly what Skarsgård said:
“No, unfortunately. It’s been a scheduling nightmare during COVID. It is what it is. It’s a big shame. Eggers is one of the great filmmakers out there and working with my brother…I don’t want to talk about it, it’s going to make me burst into tears.”
I love that you’re also in The Northman because who doesn’t love a Viking revenge story? What made you want to work with Robert Eggers and be on a set where he tries to do everything as authentic as possible?
KIDMAN: I’m heading off to do that in November. I’m deeply committed to filmmakers that I call auteurs. They’re so powerful in their visions and their abilities. I made that pledge when I was about 14 years old, that I would travel the world and work with different nationalities in different countries and different genres with different stories. That’s my calling. So, to have been asked to do it is a privilege. A lot of the things, as an actor, you’ve gotta be asked to do them. When it’s something that I’m producing, like with [The Undoing], it’s Suzanne Bier and David E. Kelley’s story. I am a part of it and I fit into it. [The Northman] is Robert Eggers’ story and his vision. I hopefully bring something to the equation but I’m there to participate and contribute.
Does that feel like it’ll be a very challenging character?
KIDMAN: Yeah. I’m pretty terrified right now. I sound calm but you shouldn’t see what’s going on inside.
I feel like you know what you’re doing and will be okay, though.
KIDMAN: A lot of times I don’t, but I just jump. I would love to say that I do know what I’m doing but a lot of times, I make very spontaneous and rather bold decisions with very little caution or thought. There’s a lot of abandonment and just going, “Okay, I’ll give it a go.” But if you look at my career, you can see that. Things work or they don’t but being committed to the process is where I’m at.
