Okay. He's obviously the name that's been thrown around the most. No one has disputed, really, that's he's a very good actor.

Now, even though a lot of us have heard his name so much in connection with Spider-Man that we're sick of it, and it doesn't seem like a sexy choice anymore, does anyone:

a.) Have any particular beef with Jake as Spidey;

or b.) Have any particular casting choice for an adult Peter Parker that they are truly confident in, other than Jake Gyllenhaal?

I never liked the idea him in the role, I duno, I just don't

He is my choice as a replacement for two reasons:

1. He is a good actor

2. Physically resembles Macguire which I think would help ease the transition into a new actor.

imo hes not bad. i mean i agree on both sides here. i kinda want kinda dont. i think id rather have others but id have to think of who.

After I saw "The Day After Tomorrow", I was concvinced that he could indeed play Peter and Spider-man.

I think he has grown on me as an actor. I think he was good in both October Sky and Donnie Darko (overrated, but still good) but I lost faith in him as an actor when he was doing movies like The Day After Tomorrow.

However, he has proven to grow into a very good leading man type actor in both Brokeback Mountain and being a highlight in the disappointing Jarhead.

I do NOT think he is as good an actor as Tobey Maguire and lacks the level of nuance and sophistication to be that kind of a character actor. But I think he is more appealing to the mainstream than Maguire and is a good actor who is very much more cut from the Hollywood leading man mold and less indie character like Maguire.

BUT I think he was willing to do SM2 because his career hadn't taken off yet as a star and it was still early in the hit franchise. The SM movies obviously erached their zenith with SM3 in terms of mainstream appeal and box office. After this the franchise will likely be waning down in popularity(though I bet SM4 is still a mega hit).

He is now a movie star with lots of offers and to play superhero in a film with a 4 or most likely a 5 (I think Maguire, Raimi and Dunst will come back for one more) in the title that is identified and defined by someone else on screen (Tobey Maguire) is less appealing ot him.

Plus, he'd be just as expensive as Maguire has become. My guess is Sony will lok at lesser known names and think Joseph-Loveitt is most likely their back up pick for SM4 if they don't return.

The problem with Joseph Gordon Levitt is that there's no way we'd be able to buy him as an older Peter Parker, after the events of the first three movies. He looks about 17.

I think he's a good choice for the reasons cb48026 mentioned. He's definitley talented, and he looks like Maguire.

To be honest, I would have no problem with them casting relative unknowns to play Peter and MJ assuming Tobey and Kirsten don't come back (actually, I might replace Kirsten anyway...) but I know they won't do that. It could help them save some money so it could be spent on other things.

It's not that I have a problem with Jake G's acting ability. It's just that I don't want to see a different actor finish a series that one has already laid the foundation for. The only way I'm in favor of re-casting is if they revamp the whole franchise and tell Spider-Man stories in a new exciting way we haven't seen yet. And even then, I still wouldn't want Jake G because he IS too much like Tobey. I'd want someone who's as different from Tobey as much as the revamp is different from the first three films... whatever that may be.

If they take their time... like another 3 to 4 years... to do SM4, SM5, SM6, etc, face it tiger, I'm afraid Tobey is going to be too old. I love him to death, but I think that may be reality.

I say no to Jake. Just don't like him for the role.

But when they do recast Peter, let's say for the next "trilogy," PLEASE make him fit Peter's physical specs a little closer... taller (5'10" or 11") and good-looking (I loved Tobey's blue eyes, but the guy had some goofy expressions). I'm not talking freakishly hot, but attractive... like comic book Peter.

That's a girls opinion. :cwink:

Any suggestions? Because I am completely at a loss to find the perfect Peter Parker. I've even looked through the indie guys... nothing.

no.......Keep tobey IMO

Okay, most of us WOULD like to keep Tobey, but let's assume for a minute that he's a sane human being who isn't going to want to keep doing the same exhausting, time-consuming movie series for the next six or seven years of his life at the expense of other projects he also really wants to do.

Okay, given that, if we absolutely cannot have Tobey back, does anyone have any first choice for Peter?

here's a name, i don't believe i'v heard mentioned,(kinda a random, thought) Jonathan Jackson

as handsome as tobey maguire is, hes still a little nerdy, and no matter how you dress him, jake gyllenhaal is really handsome. and if you gave him tweed pants that go obver his bellybutton, suspenders, glasses, a pocketprotector, all that stuff, that would just be over the top.

I saw "The Day After Tommorow" and was convinced that Jake would be a possible choice...

You can do a LOT with makeup and clothes to change a person...

I beleive it's possible to make Jake nerdy...

and besides... who says Peter STILL has to be a SUPER-nerd? Please make him nerdy... but not THAT nerdy...

look at the 90's cartoon... Pete's not that nerdy...

That's why I want Gyllenhaal for the role.

Whoever does it is going to be a disapointment. Tobey's been the prefect Spiderman. The only person who might have portrayed a comic character better on screen is Christian Bale as Batman. Personally I think that Mac guy looks more like Peter Parker than Jake.

Take whomever you want Sony, but DO NOT take Elijah Wood, please!!!

I'd really like Jake to take over the role of Peter Parker from Tobey. He's one of my favourite actors.

Another point for me is: I know Peter doesn't have blue eyes in the comics, but in the movie-world, he is a blue eyed character IMO. It just fits! It seems stupid and it shouldn't be a reason for actor choice, but if not Tobey then let at least Peter remain a guy with blue eyes ^^

ever hear of contacts, anyone can have blue eyes
anyway, it's not like jake and tobey are the only two guys in the world with blue eyes lol

No jake please, I just never liked it from the start.

My choice would be James McAvoy
