Comedy The Offical Saturday Night Live Thread - Part 3

Now that I have seen Vance, I can see them putting a fake beard and moustache on Colin Jost.
Speaking of Jost, this is probably the most newsworthy summer in a while for them to bring back Weekend Update Summer Edition.

Now the question is will she be able to play Kamala Harris for four more years if she wins?
Well, Jim Carrey stopped playing Biden right after the 2020 Election. I don't think they're ever going to put themselves in that situation again anyway after Baldwin played Trump for 4 years. It's not fair to the cast who have to struggle for screen time as it is without someone being stunt cast as the President for 4 years and unlike Baldwin who lives in NYC, Maya lives on the west coast. It's also worth noting that if Harris wins, SNL doesn't go after Democratic Presidents nearly as much as Republican ones. Trump was low hanging fruit and barely a week went by during his term without Baldwin showing up as him on SNL. By comparison, Biden and Obama before him were parodied on the show much less frequently. Bill Clinton is maybe the only exception and that's almost entirely due to the Lewinsky scandal.

I'm sad to see her go because she's legitimately talented but at the same time I can't really say I'm surprised because she was struggling for screentime during this past season, among a few other cast members like Molly Kearney and Michael Longfellow.

It's also interesting timing with Kamala Harris being the Democratic Presidential nominee and if she wins, Punkie surely would have been the one to continue playing her in the cast.

And now this:

Molly had some great moments in their first season but was struggling a lot this past season just like Punkie so this comes as even less of a surprise.

Unfortunately this is going to happen when the cast is this stacked. I hope no one else leaves since this is going to be a huge season but I'm also curious to see how many they add.

Ego most likely. I don't think they're going to pull a James Austin Johnson and hire a new cast member for their Kamala impression.

Actually I think they may keep new hires to a minimum for the 50th season. I've seen it theorized on Reddit that there'll be a ton of cameos from past SNL cast members from all 50 years of the show which would already push the cast to the background as it is.

Yeah, I think they go with Ego, but there will be backlash on that front from black people on Twitter, saying that Ego is too dark to play Kamala or something like that. Ego would knock it out of the Ballpark as Kamala.

LOL I can 100% see them getting Steve Martin for Walz.

It’s so funny that the instinct now is that they HAVE to get someone who isn’t a regular cast member for these roles.

That’s kind of a new thing, isn’t it? It’s not like in the 90s, they were going “Hey, Bill Clinton is the nominee, let’s get Tom Hanks!”

Interesting that he'd decline because I can practically guarantee that if (God willing) Kamala wins, they probably wouldn't use Walz much at all post-election. You can count on one hand the times Maya and Punkie have played Kamala on the show since she took office after the 2020 election. Democratic VPs don't get much attention on SNL. Joe Biden was an exception when he was VP solely because of Sudeikis.

Unless he's just messing with us to keep it a surprise and he actually agreed to play him.

The main reason I guess is because it's a ratings boost. There were times in the past where you'd have John Goodman playing Linda Tripp but they were few and far between. The gimmick really started to take off significantly with Larry David as Bernie. In that case it was too perfect an opportunity to miss. Then of course came Baldwin as Trump which in hindsight I don't think they would have tried had they known he would win the election. To me that just seemed like "This guy isn't gonna win anyway, let's have fun with it" but we all know what happened next (see also: South Park having Mr. Garrison stuck as Trump for 4 years).

I think they've eased back a bit on the celebrity political cameos in recent years because the cast has gotten so large. I'm also more okay with the guest stars being SNL alums like Maya where it's basically a homecoming for them rather than an A-lister like Matt Damon playing Brett Kavanaugh because while it's still funny, they really don't need the attention more than one of the struggling cast members.

In the case of Walz, I'd have been fine with Steve Martin because he might as well be an honorary SNL cast member himself but the whole joke there is just "Hey, he kinda looks like Steve Martin" which is basically the same premise as Maya's Kamala.

Jonathan Majors, maybe? Didn't he host in 2021?
I'm pretty sure if Majors was causing trouble when he hosted SNL, that would have been aired out along with the rest of his dirty laundry. No reason for anyone from SNL to keep that a secret that after all of his other issues came to light.

I'm completely stunned that Chloe Troast got the axe after one season with such a breakout year. She had three fantastic sketches with Little Orphan Cassidy, the one where she played Mama Cass in the Emma Stone episode and "Get That Boy Back" from the Gosling episode. I thought she was going to be the next Cecily Strong. She showed even more promise than some of the seasoned vets and according to her IG, she wasn't asked back. WTF is going on over there? They literally kept 20+ people on for years and now they get rid of someone who's actually talented. I really can't think of another one season and done cast member who had a better season than she did.

The hiring of Emil Wakim solves a problem SNL has had for years: someone of Arab descent playing Arab characters.

Aristotle Athari is Iranian American and was in the cast a few years ago but was let go after one season. Let's see if Wakim fares better but I suppose it doesn't even make a difference if Lorne is cutting promising newcomers anyway.
