Comedy The Offical Saturday Night Live Thread - Part 3

Jim Gaffigan is an interesting choice for Walz and yet it works.

Bowen Yang as JD Vance will trigger him.

"The theme will be Hanukkah" was great.

I wonder if a no name impersonating Trump is going to get under his skin.

Solid premiere even though I'm still salty about Chloe Troast being let go. Loved Jim Gaffigan as Walz. Now they just need to get him to host. Also loved the Samberg and Carvey cameos. I figure this'll probably be one of the last times we see Biden portrayed on SNL so they couldn't resist giving Carvey a shot at it. He's always doing Biden impressions on the podcast he does with David Spade.

Jean Smart did a great job hosting, the Scholastic math book sketch was the standout for her IMO.

Bowen was all over the show, he's definitely cemented himself as a major player at SNL now. Makes me think he'll probably leave the show soon, possibly after this season.

He hasn't said much about James Austin Johnson, at least I don't think. Probably because even he knows it's a good impression. :o

So when I was watching SNL, I thought of the time where Kamala Harris was one of multiple candidates to be Biden's VP in 2020. One of the names I remembered was Stacy Abrams and the thought was "if Biden picked her, who was going to play her?" so I thought of someone who would have played Stacy Abrams had Biden picked her: Queen Latifah.

Having said that when Harris was chosen, we all thought "Maya Rudolph." Another no brainer was Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson. We all probably thought at the time "Ego Nwodim is playing her."

More reason for me to believe that Che and Jost are signing off as Weekend Update anchors after this season. They've had a hell of a run but leaving after both an election year and a milestone 50th season as well as over a decade at the desk is a good time to walk away. I could see Jost staying on as head writer since he's been there long before he was even on Update but Che seems like he's been ready to go.

A lot of people on the SNL Reddit think that Michael Longfellow would be a good fit for an Update anchor and to be honest since he's now officially a repertory cast member it seems like it could eventually happen. He hasn't made that much of an impression in many sketches outside of Update but he's been great whenever he's shown up as a guest on there so he'd be a good fit.

I knew they wouldn't be able to help themselves and give Nate another memorable George Washington sketch but Sabado Gigante, the Water Park, Golf Tournament, Heidi Gardner getting her revenge from the Beavis & Butthead sketch by making everyone break by eating a mile high burger and downing a shake, and THE RETURN OF THE LONELY ISLAND (minus Jorma Taccone)?!?!!! Yeah, this was a great show. I love Jean Smart but THIS should have been the premiere.

That would have been a slap in the face to James Austin Johnson. It's literally the main reason he was hired. Gillis does a good Trump but I wouldn't call it better than Johnson's impression.

What's going on with the higher ups over there with these questionably bad decisions between that and dropping Chloe Troast (which I will continue to be salty about, sorry not sorry)?

Every time Ariana Grande hosts SNL I always think, "Maybe this is the one that will get me to actually like her"...

What a snoozefest after how good last week's show was. At least Weekend Update was funny and Stevie Nicks performed "Edge of Seventeen". :o

I thought "My Best Friend's House" was pretty good, but overall, last week's show was a lot better.

That was probably the sketch I liked best outside of the opening but it wasn't really because of Grande. She's good at impressions like Jennifer Coolidge and Celine Dion but I just don't think she's got the acting skills to carry sketches.

One of those Jennifer Coolidges was so good it’s scary. The other… was fine.

They need to do this skit again with Jennifer. It was a travesty she didn't pop up, too.

She was supposed to host but then the WGA strike happened and her show got cancelled. I'm surprised she didn't host this past season.
