Ant-Man The Official Ant-Man News and Speculation Thread - Part 2

Well this is just bizarre. Edgar Wright has been writing this movie longer than he's been alive. He started it back in the 60s. Surely Marvel should have known for a while that his creative vision would be different from theirs? Maybe Wright was insistent on not incorporating it properly into the MCU?

But maybe this could be a blessing in disguise. It was always Wright who has prevented Hank Pym from joining the MCU properly, and Feige has adhered to his vision all along. I wouldn't be upset if Michael Douglas also decided to leave the project, and Marvel recast Hank as a younger guy who is the same age as the rest of the Marvel actors. Maybe they could even make Rudd play Pym now?

In fact, it seems like Wright's movie should always have been a sequel or even a reboot, while the first movie should have concentrated on Pym. It's probably too late now to rewrite the script to make it about Pym, but they could always recast, unless of course they decided to delay the movie until 2016. But then, would they even make the movie now without Wright?

It almost seems as if Marvel has put all their eggs in one basket with Wright regarding this movie. It has all depended on him actually being part of this production, and not that they necessarily wanted to make this movie all along and just happened to find a suitable director. If they did want to make it, they could have done so years earlier, or even last year so that Pym could be in A:AOU. Instead, they had to wait for Wright, who isn't even part of this now anyway.

This. :up::up::up::up:

Maybe Ant-Man wasn't generating any type of excitement especially among the geek community?:mag:hmm

the saddest part of it (for me) is that i think Wright was symbolically putting himself into the movie w/ the Paul Rudd casting. i was anxious to see how he'd take to Wight's direction.

That sheds a lot of light, a TON of light on his story. Wright's Ant-Man is the story of someone who looks up to Henry Pym, not the story of Henry Pym. The story is about an Ant-Man fan, basically, who finds out, 'no, kid, you're special, you're an Ant-Man too.' The feels!

I hope they still shoot it. I'd like to see what could have been, y'know?

Now this is nothing against Wright and Marvel, but IMHO that's just not a story I'm as invested in. I want the story of Hank Pym, not Scott Lang.

Wright was doing the equivalent of having first read an Iron Man comic with Jim Rhodes and deciding to make a movie about him and bypassing Tony Stark. Imagine Stark having been turned into an old man from the Cold War.

This is gonna be an interesting Comic-Con. I expect at least one person to put Feige under the gun during a Q&A and explaining this may not be as easy as with Norton since there was obvious animosity there people kinda accepted. Here, after years of goodwill (and allegedly still so), it's just an overall bizarre and intriguing story.

how do you know? you haven't seen either story play out in live-action.

and imagine if that analogy was a good one. for it to work, James Rhodes would have had to take over for Tony permanently (Tony having moved on to another identity); from 1979 to the present. Scott Lang was not Pym's pilot or lackey. he was the chosen successor; by Pym's own account. Pym's Ant-Man costume was collecting dust when Scott started wearing it.

Exactly.

Because Michael Douglas is playing Hank Pym. Scott Lang is played by Paul Rudd.

he's appearing in flashback too. Marvel isn't against using earlier settings; as evidenced by the agent carter series.

I'm dying of curiosity to know what the hell happened here

If the Reddit rumor is to be believed, that's pretty lame if Wright's been dragging his feet and burning through money. But I have to imagine there's some wrong on both sides - I mean at the same time, it's certainly not his first rodeo, so how can faith in him handling a summer blockbuster drop so substantially?

Plus its just common sense: How can you tell the story of Scott Lang, without telling the story of Hank Pym first? Or at least, simultaneously?

Truth is always somewhere in the middle.

What does that mean? You think 75% of the movie is going to star Michael Douglas playing a YOUNG Hank Pym? Listen, I get that Michael Douglas is playing Pym and they could have some flashback scenes and even use some fancy movie magic to make Douglas look like 40 years younger or what have you, but it's pretty clear that the main protagonist and lead of this movie is Paul Rudd's Scott Lang.

Edgar Wright came out at Comic-Con and he cited To Steal An Ant-Man was his favorite comic story ever. That's the story he wanted to adapt, and that story is Scott Lang's origin.

And listen, I have no problem with that. Wright had a story in mind and he set out to make that story. My simple view is, I'm less invested and emotionally attracted to that type of story. Some people could disagree and that's also fine.

But enough of this wishy washy "YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING" garbage. "HANK PYM WILL STILL BE THE MAIN CHARACTER!" No he's not. At most he will be the Anthony Hopkins type mentor that Hopkins was in Mask of Zorro, but make no mistake the main lead and protagonist was still Antonio Banderas as Alejandro/Zorro.

Marvel only releases 2 movies a year. Unlike say WB, where if more time is needed on BVS, they can move another movie into that slot, Marvel can't. So imagine it comes down to Edgar needing more time, and Marvel drawing a line.

Did anyone see Whedon's "salute" to Wright? It was awesome.

He's so hit-and-miss with his stuff that it's not even worth paying attention to him any more.

Yes he's very hit and miss. Something that he'll never own up to. I think the breaking point was the 'Planet Hulk' story that totally destroyed the site's reputation. Disney caught wind of LR after their scoop on 'Guardians of the Galaxy' and I really think LR underestimated Disney's fake spies. Yes I'm convinced that Disney broke LR.
