I really mean no offense when I say that 2/3 of these casting suggestions make me very, very unhappy. This choice is so full of win that it's not even funny.
Here some of my unoriginal half ass choices:
Superman/Clark Kent: Armie Hammer or an unknown who is a good, charming actor.
Lois Lane: Anne Hathaway or Leighton Meester. WB is obsessesed with casting their female leads in this flicks with WB/CW actresses. I think that she'd actually be a good choice for once.
Lex Luthor: Joaquin Phoenix or some other fine somewhat young actor.
Armie Hammer seems like an affable, capable guy, but I can't see a single thing about him that would be appropriate for Superman besides his height. I mean it, not a single thing about him screams... nay, not a single thing about him even whispers "Superman" to me.
Even worse, the idea of Leighton Meester as Lois Lane. What scares me most, though, is your idea that she could be considered as she is, after all, a lead on a (successful?) known CW show. I mean, look at Blake Lively in Green Lantern. It could happen... I like Leighton, but she's got a young face, and I would instantly fear for her coming off as young and ineffectual as Kate Bosworth did in "Returns".
Hammer and Meester together would, in my opinion, reek of casting for the youth vote. Going the MTV route. Casting in a way that could work for a music video or a piece of popcorn brainlessness that doesn't have 60 years worth of rich history, mythology and dedicated following. Superman and Lois aren't just a hot couple from a singular fun story. They are one of the greatest pairings in pop culture, in modern mythology, and, even if you're casting younger as opposed to older, you need to sign actors that embody the characters physically as well as the core essences, the souls.
Idealistic, I know...
Joaquin, on the other hand, could be cool.
