The Official Choose A Director Thread

That's why he'd be better off as a consultant or co-writer.

Geoff Johns should write the STORY and then real professional screenwriters should be hired to write the script to Johns story.

Kinda what happened with BB and TDK. Goyer came up with the stories and the Nolan(s) wrote the screenplays

I personally don’t think it should be a comic writer tackling Sueprman, I want an established screenwriter or writing team taking on the task.

Goyer and Nolan wrote Begins.

The current "Braniac" arc with Krypton backstory in ACtion Comics would work very nicely as a Superman film. YOu could easliy flesh out Superman's origin as well as connecting it to the villain everyone wants to see in the next SUperman film. Plus you can start it in the middle of the action and go back and tell the origin in flashback.

That's why I think the the reboot screenplay needs to mix story elements from Johns Action Comics arc going on now....with Waids Birthright, throw in a bit of Loebs Superman for All Seasons, with come action elements from Abrams Flyby.....and a Superman film of epic proportions can be made potentially.

That's why I wanted Dini with Johns. He's an experienced TV writer, and I think it might keep Johns grounded in what a 2 hour film should be like instead of a 6 or 12 month story arc.

Actually it was Goyer. Nolan added a few thematic elements here and there, but most of BEGINS was Goyer's. Chris Nolan really isn't that much of a writer. His brother is.

I don't know....thematic elements and dialouge are pretty important.

Nonetheless, the Nolan brothers are better screenwriters than Goyer....IMO.

I'm talking experienced film screenwriters. If WB hasn't brought in Dini or Timm at all during the many ups and downs of Superman, they aren't bringing them in now. WB/DC likes to keep their branches seperated.

Yeah, but without a doubt, Nolan was the main man behind the screenplay.

See below.

You're right. Goyer wrote the first pass and handed off to Nolan.

I kinda would like this kept out of the hands of people like David Hayter and Zack Penn.....

Memento and Following, both solely written by Chris, destroy anything Goyer has written.

Who gives a crap what Richard Donner thinks....I'm so sick of hearing his damn name.

Sadly enough, Showtime is correct. WB should have brought in Timm/Dini along time ago and teamed them someone like John Logan or Tim Minear. They did not, and they most likely will not.

If anything, the script should be given to Jeph Loeb. Superman For All Seasons is still a favorite of mine. Team Loeb with an experienced movie writer.

They're not the only choices for experienced screenwriters in Hollywood. Plus, Singer tried to bring in Hayter, WB wouldn't have it.

Writing a comic book script and writing an actual screenplay are a whole different deal. And require a whole different level and kind of experience. I almost demand that comic book writers are involved; as consultants. Leave the actual writing to Hollywood writers.

You know I would normally agree with getting sick of hearing Donner's name but its the fans who glorify him that annoy me and frankly I think Donner would agree that you can make a better origin movie. Choosing to flesh out zod in the comics with Johns shows that he probably doesn't look back on his movies and say "perfection". He knows they were a product of their time. I think Geoff Johns is what this film series needs and he does have experience in film. With the release date being what it is something tells me that there will be a lot of eyes watching the smallville episode that he wrote.

He doesn't have any writing experience in film that I know of?

Do you know why WB was so against Hayter? He'd done a lot of work on comicbook movies. He co-wrote X1 (for the minimum writer's fee), he wrote the original script of X2 before Harris and Dougherty came in and reworked it and he wrote the original Watchmen screenplay for WB. He's also been in talks with WB over the Lost Planet videogame movie adaptation. So why wouldn't they let him have a crack at Superman?

its obviously true the differences between writing for comics and writing for the screen. but, they share the most important thing....quality storytelling. and if someone has quality storytelling skills, the jump from one medium to the other isnt all that drastic, nor is it all that difficult. and geoff johns has a background in the film industry, so he has the experience and understanding of the job expectations.

Maybe they thought that they were just going to get the same thing they got from Singer's other writers. I would make a joke about what that was but almost everyone on here already know how I feel.

It wasn't a case of WB being against Hayter, more of a situation where they were against Bryan Singer bringing in one of his own writers. In other words, maybe if WB had thought of it and brought him in, it would have been a different story.

What is this background in the film industry that everybody keeps talking about? You mean the assistant gigs he had with Donner?

maybe because this was the time when WB wanted to get rid of singer. so maybe it was not that they didnt like hayter but because it was from singer.

who knows :hehe:
