The Official Choose A Director Thread

You are darn right. Besides, the Silver Age stuff that has been re-introduced by JOhns has nothing to do with the horrible SR or the Donner films.

Yes, it does. In the "Last Son" arc, Clark was more nerdy-like, the crystal fortress and technology, and they gave Supes more depth with the Christopher Kent storyline; as if Supes wanted a child of his own, a descendant. Plus Luthor was not the corporate one. Face it guys, the crystal technology IS ICONIC now to Supes. Even in cartoons. I was watching an episodes of "Fairly Oddparents" the other day, and they were showing a group of superheroes, a justice league-like, and the guy with the red cape could could fly, had a spit curl and he would throw these crystals (that looked exactly like in the movies) and things would grow such as a Hall of Justice. :hehe:

Even though his script from a while back didnt get very good reviews, I wouldnt mind seeing a JJ Abrams directed Superman film.

James Cameron, Gore Verbinski and The Watchowski Bros. could also do awesome.

Dont shoot the messenger but i heard from a pretty good source that Gore Verbinski is interested in doing the new Superman movie and that WB is in talks with him.

Now, this may or may not happen but I just wanted to share with the board what i heard. I believe he would be a great choice.

Showtime, have you heard anything about this?

See I don't know if the last two Pirates movies were his fault or the screenwriters...

But I don't think I would like to see him tackle Superman.

why not?
he has already worked on a bigbudget movie. so he knows what to expect.

well, it would have the action that most are wanting.

They already "talked" to Gore in 2007 along with the Pirates writers, Rossio and Elliott. The talks commenced due to the critical comments of Superman Returns made by Rossio and Elliott.

Right now Gore doing it? I don't know about that, but they did talk to him previously.

Uh ... no.

The crystal technology isn't all that iconic.

If you go out in the street right now and ask someone if they remember a movie where a guy made things grow from a crystal, they probably wouldn't know what you were talking about.

If you go out on the street and ask the average person to take 4 one block rights and tell you where they are, they probably wouldn't know what you were talking about.:(

I can dig it. He isnt a bad director, I actually liked the second Pirates but havent seen the third.

But, until we get a big announcement, I'm taking this with a grain of salt.

this gets a big fat ehhhhhhh. the first pirates was decent. the second one, without exaggeration, was one of the worst movies i have ever seen....after that, i didnt even bother with the third.

BS! The second wasnt bad at all.

I don't believe this until I hear something concrete anyway. Seems like everybody says that they have a "pretty good source". It's hilarious.

If you want a good Superman movie, you'd better hope Gore Verbinski doesn't get his hands on it. Unless he pulls off the genius of the first Pirates.

It's like we share a brain that's exactly how I feel. Pirates 2 was one of the most painful theatrical experiences in my life right up there with Stephen King's Thinner, the second Matrix and Bayformers. So I avoided the third one like I avoid women with STD's. I would never ever understand how somebody could like that movie I guess I really am out of touch with this generation of teens.

Oh, come on. :)

Not to mention the fact that LS's Clark looked remarkably like Brandon Routh, or the fact that they used the classic movie villains as antagonists (Zod, Non, and Ursa). Heck, they named the youngster after the greatest Superman actor ever AND (IMO) he even resembled Jason somewhat from SR.

The Pirates sequels were obviously thrown together quickly to make a sh**load of money, and I would blame Disney for that more than Verbinski. But the first one was good and it clicked with a lot of people. He's also done The Ring, which is one of the best horror films of the modern age and The Weather Man, one of the few Nicolas Cage films in the last ten years that was actually good. I wouldn't be opposed to Gore taking a crack at Superman.

^^i thought the ring was absolutely horrible, but i know im in the minority about that. weather man was a pretty good flick. i mean, i'd be open to the idea of verbinski, but i think theres better choices to helm the film.

Verbinski wouldn't be a bad choice...as long as the writing staff from POTC wasn't grafted over onto Superman. But I heard that Depp was already signed for another Pirates movie, so I'd be almost certain that he'd be paid through the nose to come back and deal with that franchise as opposed to taking a larger risk in doing Superman. After all, Pirates was one of the main reasons SR was buried. Why jump ship to the losing side when it was you who kicked their behind in the first place? I find this rumor doubtful at best.

I actually liked the last two Pirates movies, in fact I preferred them to the first one - they were darker, more powerful, far more epic/mythic than the first one with elements like the kraken, Calypso, the maelstrom. The first Pirates was just a camp adventure romp.

The last two Pirates movies convince me that Verbinski could do a good job with fantasy material that needs a grand scale.

I made this comment in another thread and it was pretty much off the top of my head. I thougth about it while I was running today, and I'm going to come out and say I think Nick Meyer would be an excellent choice for Writer/Director on the reboot. Is it a flashy choice? No, it isn't. Meyer is not going to bring the same attention that a Peter Jackson, or even a Bryan Singer would. But the man qould bring quality and character depth to the film, and he knows how to juggle character moments with awesome action scenes. His Star Trek movies were the best in the series, and Rick Berman being the *****e bag that he is would not let Meyer have his way with Nemesis. Meyer's one shortcoming is that he won't roll over and do whatever the studio says, which is why he does not have the largest body of work out there, and he likes to have control over the script at all times. But he becomes the film that he works on, and I like that. Meyer loves fantasy/sci-fi/adventure material, so I'm sure he would love to work on Superman.

Before writing Wrath of Khan, Meyer sat and watched all of the original Star Trek episodes, and picked the best story to write about. It would awesome if he did that with Superman: TAS, and with the help of someone like Jeph Loeb perhaps, adapted the Last Son of Krypton episodes for the big screen.
