The Official Choose A Director Thread

I agree about the soul vision, but I find the first five chapters of the story to be solid and the take on Lex Luthor to be pretty good.

Wachowskis I'm kinda "meh" on. Birthright I definately wouldn't have a problem with--definately the best origin story thus far.

I usually don't agree with the TS on much (except us both liking Superman), but this isn't a bad idea at all. Meyer is a great writer and director when it comes to seeing an idea to fruition and letting the characters shine (even when it's an ensemble piece...which is tougher for some writers). Plus, he's good enough to work Shakespeare into Star Trek and make it cool. Anyone who can do that is fine by me. Plus, he's economical. If WB is looking for a director who can do much with less...he'd be one of my top choices (next to maybe Joss Whedon).

The one thing we all have in common here. We all seem to forget that, but Superman is why we are here.

BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!. Dude not even close. The plane sequence from SR was so lackluster & boring I thought Superman droaning on with Lois at the DP rooftop was more exciting. The plane sequence was just a cheap redo of the STM plane save & when you consider it was 2006 when SR came out, the action with the plane in STM almost looked better constructed & more epic in feel. SR was nothing more than a cheap knock off of STM with similar scenes but just not done as well.

Steve

ACTUALLY, the plane rescue was a rip-off from John Byrne and Marv Wolfman's 'Man Of Steel'.

It's really similar.

In MOS, Clark is making a daring daytime rescue before adopting the Superman identity and saves a 'Space Plane' which was originally a space shuttle. It was changed because of the shuttle tragedy that occurred before the issue went to print.

If you go back and read 'Man Of Steel' you can't help but notice the similarities.

I loved Birthright and I think it is a Superman film ready to go. As my first forray into adapting something into a screenplay, I tackled Birthright and it was perhaps too easy. All I did was add a villain to be a physical threat to Superman, cut out redundant scenes and make Lois actually intelligent enough to see through a pair of glasses. I am going to do more revisions before I would call it done but a very solid first draft came amazingly quick.

I wouldn't call it a ripoff, per se. It's an obvious homage to a key element of the comics.

How is using stuff that happened in the comics a rip-off? Isn't that what people want to see? The Dark Knight did plenty of that and people loved it.

For it's time maybe that was an iconic and best 'super' sequence but I don't agree that it's the best of any at this point.

As much as I don't like SR, I'd even say the plane rescue in that tops Donner's helicopter rescue in excitement.

I do love the smile on Chris's face when Lois says "But who's got you?!" while holding onto her and the chopper.

Agreed. And the plane rescue is down right epic. One of, if not the best superhero action sequence so far. :o

Exactly. :whatever: ....

Oh, and the Poll's options suck big time for me; they are way too biased. I love the Donner/Singer universe, I think it rocks. It's epic, mythic, classic, and I wish to see it expanded on by adding more comicbook elements.

The plan sequence was the biggest and best set piece in any superhero movie to date in my opinion. Problem is the action story couldn't outdo itself as the story moved forward. They didn't escalate from there.

In regards to ripping it off, does that mean everybody ripped of Fleischer?

The plane sequence is what I use to show off my blu-ray player, TV and sound system. It looks and sounds that good.

I also have to admit, that while I think Joss Whedon is perfect for The Flash, I really want to know what he would do with Superman. Joss has a desire to do a comic book film, but he will want full creative control, like Meyer. That is how guys like them are. I really believe that the reason Meyer has not had a bigger career is that he can be stubborn with studio's, and he has a reputation for wanting complete control or nothing at all. Whedon is the same way, it's his vision or he will not do it.

I do think Whedon could make Superman "cool" again, just because of his writing style and attention to character depth. Whedon would totally do post-crisis Superman, and we would get Tom Lenk as Jimmy Olsen.

Meyer hasn't directed a theatrical film since 1991. I don't see it happening.

Watching the Transformers blu-ray HUD feature and it said that "At one point Michael Bay considered directing Superman Returns." This happened when the John Tuturro character stripped down to his singlet with a logo in front like the Superman insignia.

I know for many fans Bay better not even come close to a Superman film, but I for one would be very excited. At least he would make Superman look good, and at this point that's what I want, hopefully with a decent script.

He certainly fits the 'director' Millar has been referring to.

I would have loved to see a Michael Bay directed Superman film but I know I'm probably in the minority.

here's the thing, Bay on his own scares me. Moreover, SR looked really good, equally as good as a bay movie, but ironically, like many of bay's movies, it lacked a worthwhile story to carry the action and imagery. We'd end up with the same thing, unless he had another 'hollywood super power' pulling the narrative string behind the scenes, as he did with Transformers

This has been my fear with Mark Millar's pitch, the first guy I thought of when he said, "big American action director," was Michael Bay...I'm not sure how I feel about him, I think it can be really great or really terrible...hopefully the script will help him out...

I don't think that it was Superman Returns because that was Singer's (bad) idea.

There's no way SR matched the visceral intensity and large scale action in Bay's best work. Replace the robots in the Transformers trailer with Brainiac's minions and imagine Superman duking it out with them and you get an idea of what a Bay Superman movie might look like. He just knows how to use the camera for action.

Superman should be the grandest, most cinematic of super heroes. It's the golden age for such movies and frankly I can't believe we're all sitting here not knowing where it's going or when it's going to happen.
