The Official Choose A Director Thread

Ironically enough, both Pirates 4 and the Superman reboot are in the same position at the moment. That is to say they have the lead and are now finding everyone else - i.e. screenwriter(s), director, etc.

Verbinski would be a solid choice!

They key for him is to get the right screenwriting team to use Waids Birthright, Loebs' Superman For All Seasons, and Johns' current Action Comics story arc featuring Braniac as the source material and as inspiration for the screenplay. The other key is to nail editing of the film and hire a great editor.

I don't know yet whether or not it would be a good or bad thing if he hired his screenwriters from the Pirates film. Hmmm...

It depends what Rossio and Elliot would bring to the table....

Gore would make an interesting director. I can tell you though without a shadow of a doubt, that somebody who has directed movies will be the next director of Superman :wow: :o

It's like we share a brain that's exactly how I feel. Pirates 2 was one of the most painful theatrical experiences in my life right up there with Stephen King's Thinner, the second Matrix and Bayformers. So I avoided the third one like I avoid women with STD's. I would never ever understand how somebody could like that movie I guess I really am out of touch with this generation of teens.

I agree....the second Pirates film is very comparable to the second Matrix film.

The film had some great elements but some VERY bad elements that should have been edited out. The editing was atrocious for Pirates 2. If any editing even happened in post that is! lol

Well. Sorta kinda. Depp was officially announced, Routh hasn't been.

True. Although Routh could still be under contract from his 3 picture deal.

That said, I don't think we'll hear anything official outta WB till they're damn-ready and willing to unveil their entire slate of DC film-projects.

That's the thing, they wouldn't be announcing a new casting choice if Routh is still playing the character, he already is Superman. Easy enough for them.

Clock is ticking.

Correct.

They'll make a big press release officially announcing the Superman reboot and probably the identity of whomever is hired to write/direct along with a "Uh, by the way, Routh is still playing Superman/Clark Kent" type remark at the end.

I've a feeling someone along the lines of Doug Liman will wind up directing.

I liked the second one but disliked the 3rd.

Overall, I liked all the Pirates films. They were fun and entertaining films.....but the 2nd and 3rd films lacked discipline and needed to be tightened up, instead of completely let loose if you know what I mean.

From what I understand, certain creative parts of Birthright were because of editorial mandates (i.e. knowing Lex prior to Metropolis). For compression and time sake, they should leave Lex out of Smallville for a movie continuity restart.

I think it would be a cool idea if Waid developed a story outline of what he had intended sans the editorial mandates. Sidn't Millar, Morrison and Waid developed some treatment on this as well ("Ultimate" Superman)? I think a fusion of Birthright, Man of Steel and the film maker's own vision would work better.

Thats what I think as well.

Mix elements of BIRTHRIGHT, SUPERMAN FOR ALL SEASONS, ULTIMATE SUPERMAN AND JOHNS CURRENT ACTION COMICS ARC with some of the directors vision and something special may happen with the script and screenplay.

Keeping Lex outta Smallville though in the movie.

I'd pass. Birthright always seemed to me as a way to milk Smallville's success.

I'd much rather see a loose adaptation of For All Seasons in restart form. For All Seasons nailed characterization. It could be easily done.

First Act - You show Krypton. Show Jor-El pleading to save the planet and failing. Show the love Jor-El and Lara feel for their son. Don't make Jor-El come off as a man who calculated that Superman would save Earth, a God figure (which is Donner's biggest mistake, I think). Just show him as a man who loved his son so much, that he would go to any length to save him. Then plenty of Smallville in the first act. Show Clark's desire to fit in, but knowledge that he never can. Build up his relationship with Ma and Pa Kent. Climax the first act with the tornado (I love Clark's line in For All Seasons after the tornado..."I could've done more". It shows so much about why Clark does what he does) and end with his goodbye to Lana and arrival in Metropolis.

Second Act - you work to establish Lex and the rivalry. Show Lex's contempt for Superman stealing his spot light, show Lois' growing infatuation, Clark at the planet, etc. Introduce Metallo during the second act. Following a botched bank robbery, prevented by Superman, the thief is shot. The ambulance however is driven by Mercy. Climax the second act with Lex doing something horrible, perhaps two simultaneous acts of terror on the city (exclude Toxin...she wouldn't translate well to film). One of these acts should be carried out by Metallo, who gives Superman a prompt ass kicking. Superman escapes and confronts Lex who gives his infamous speech that says no matter how powerful Superman is...he can't be two places at once. Show how Lex has the mental edge and just how untouchable he is. Defeated, Clark flees back to Smallville.

Third Act - Give two weeks of Clark/Superman being gone. During which, crime over takes Metropolis. Then have the flood in Smallville from All Seasons which Big Blue saves the town from. After which Lana gives Clark a pep talk and encourages him to return. Shortly before Clark returns however, Metallo goes mad. He resents Luthor for turning him into a monster. He interrupts a press conference and takes Lois and Luthor hostage. Superman shows up, rejuivnated by Lana's pep talk. Epic battle with Metallo ensues. He lets Luthor know he is back. Clark gets the scoop on both the battle and Superman saving Smallville from the flood and upstages Lois. End.

That is how I would handle a reboot. But definitely no Birthright.

You know Matt, me and you have rarely agreed, if EVER, but THIS would make a pretty damn good Superman movie. It would have to be 2 and a half hours long of course. But I would accept something like for sure.

An a side note, not sure if I would want The Wachowski's anywere near this, and yes, I even liked The Matrix sequels to an extent.

Donner's first Superman film and what he made of his 2nd before his dreadful firing was brilliant. However, Lester and Singer ruined this world of Superman now and forever. It is time to embrace change, and get new people who will reinvent the character, and maybe give us a physical threat like Brainiac or Metallo.

While I love the Donner films - I do want to see an updating. However, don't totally knock Donner's version or his understanding of the character, he presented the most iconic and best 'Super' sequence in any superhero movie yet. The helicopter rescue wins hands down imo. There is not a sequence in TDK that matches it - simply it stands up today.

For it's time maybe that was an iconic and best 'super' sequence but I don't agree that it's the best of any at this point.

As much as I don't like SR, I'd even say the plane rescue in that tops Donner's helicopter rescue in excitement.

I do love the smile on Chris's face when Lois says "But who's got you?!" while holding onto her and the chopper.

BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!. Dude not even close. The plane sequence from SR was so lackluster & boring I thought Superman droaning on with Lois at the DP rooftop was more exciting. The plane sequence was just a cheap redo of the STM plane save & when you consider it was 2006 when SR came out, the action with the plane in STM almost looked better constructed & more epic in feel. SR was nothing more than a cheap knock off of STM with similar scenes but just not done as well.

You're not a true fan. Go back to Save Superman. :whatever: You and your own fake source. Ha!

While I think the plane sequence in SR is visually fantastic, I'd still put the helicopter far above it, in terms of debut sequences. The plane scene was more exciting, less epic. The actual Superman debut in SR was after he had landed the plane, while in STM, the moment he grabs that chopper, he's there to look up to. So, yeah, lots of props to Donner for that.

Though the docks intro in Batman Begins comes pretty close.

This guy gives you an idea of why Mister Rictus was so angry about getting stuck with Australia.

Birthright is not bad, there is some pretty interesting ideas. Of course, there are stuffs i dont like so much (like Lex and Clark being friends at Smallvile), but overall is pretty good.
