The Official DC Comics THE SPIRIT Thread

Really?! What are you an English Professor? O.K. sometimes I make spelling mistakes when I rush and I am not a professional writer, nor do I play one on TV; but when I earned my both of my degrees I passed all of my writing requirements with flying colors. I suppose I'm being childish even defending myself, but I'll take the risk. Furthermore, since when are we being graded here?!

Hah, CConn, the grammar Nazi! haha!

Anyway back on topic, I just had a thought.

The Spirit (along with other characters) appeared primarily in the strips in newspapers. DC has revived him in comics and I am starting to notice other, smaller companies doing the same with other newspaper characters like The Phantom, Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon. It looks like the Spirit might be have kicked off a revolution. I for one appreciate this because it gives comics readers who may only be familiar with the BIG 2 a chance to look at older historic characters. I wonder if someone will buy the rights to Dick Tracy and get a new series going?

The downside with this pulp revival of sorts is that Dynamite has the publishing rights to them and every damn Dynamite book is 4 dollars. On top of that, I heard Buck Rogers kinda sucked and I wasn't too impressed with their Tarzan, Phantom and John Carter books.

I dug Matt Wagner's takes on Zorro and Green Hornet though. And I'm really excited to see how Garth Ennis takes on The Shadow.

In regards to the Spirit, I'd love to see DC do something with the character again so long as they give him a good creative team. Honestly, with what Francis Manpaul is doing with the Flash, I'd love to see him tackle art duties on a Spirit book.

Zorro was good. Green Hornet Year One was good... didn't like rest. Tarzan was okay. They are doing a Flash Gordon that is an origin and that is amazing. The Shadow will be okay (nothing like what DC had in the 70's and 80's). The Phantom series was best by MOONSTONE!

We need a new Spirit series that is just like what Cooke did with great art. The Spirit needs to be revamped in a good way.

Your signature's tons better now, Bats. Image is kicking ass currently. :o

I'll have to check out the Flash Gordon book. Whose the creative team on that one?

The Shadow should be good. Ennis seems to have a good understanding of the character and Aaron Campbell, who did the Green Hornet: Year One art is doing art here. So it'll look nice.

The only DC Shadow stuff I've read is the Denny O'Neil stuff and I found it to be alright. Not great. Same goes with DC's 4 issue attempt at The Avenger, that Jack Kirby did 2 issues of. I don't have much of an interest in Howard Chaykin's 80's mini though I do wanna check out the Andrew Helfer/Bill Sienkiewicz/Kyle Baker stuff and the Shadow Strikes book, too. Some of the Dark Horse Shadow stuff is neat, too.

If DC did a new Spirit series, I actually would LOVE to see Matt Wagner write and draw it. He seems to have a great handle on all pulp characters. We'd get great artwork and great stories.

I think Matt Wagner would be great on the Spirit. Ironically, I am a Batman fan and thought his Mad Monk/Monster Men stuff was mediocre. I also never really got into his Grendel stuff. Liked everything else he did though.

In regards to the Spirit, that VOL. 5 book that DC put out (USLAN's run) was refreshing. Straight crime comics. That's what we need to see more of.
