Claremont is one of the few writers that can actually write a decent Gambit
Not in Forever he hasn't. He's a Gambit/Pete Wisdon hybrid at the moment and looks awful. :( Apparently he only fights when he wants to, too. It's awful and deeply depressing.

alternate reality and I dont put much into those as they arent 616 and dont need to stay true to the characters. Forever itself is a big fail and many characters seem to be off as it stands. For what its worth when CC does get a hold of 616 Gambit, he tends to do him justice. Ever since he returned to the X-men back in 2000, I think Gambit is the one character he probably did the best with and the second Gambit got away from his pen, the character took a nosedive for the worst, which he has yet to recover from

Fabien Nincienza wrote Gambit's first ongoing and it was wonderful. :)

Who do you guys think could write a good Gambit?
lol...well I already stated my preference. As much as I liked CC's writing for Gambit, I dont want him anywhere near the X franchise again. Too many other characters to screw with

I totally forgot about Nincienza. I thought Layman's Gambit was pretty good too. But Nincienza is a better writer overall.

Claremont wrote a fantastic Gambit...but I'm in agreement that he should stay away from the main X-books.

Of course he is, lol. I'm pretty sure he was the one who created Deadpool. :D

I think Layman wrote Gambit's lightheartedness pretty well. But i also wanna see a darker side of Gambit. His contradictive personality is one of the things that make him so interesting.

For those curious, here are scans of the whole Gambit/Death switcheroo from the Legacy annual. I assume all this will be relevant later:

I've got the feeling that Gambit's one-issue takeover of Legacy coming up won't explain nearly as much as we'd like about this... if anything at all.

I will say that:

1. I like that Gambit's very aware of this part of him and how to control it, to an extent (you save a lot of story telling time by skipping the character's own WTF moments).
2. He certainly seemed to display zero guilt or compassion for the telepath after his warning was ignored, which is a good throwback to Gam
bit's early days. When he fought without treating his opponents lightly.
3. Being able to revert to Death will, at least for awhile, keep writers from being able to call Gambit a one-trick pony. He never was a one-trick pony -- he's just looked at as one by writers and readers who dislike the character to begin with. The new mystery takes that complaint away.

Glad to see him coming back to x-men team
not me. I think he's come to a point that he's moved on from the X-men, at least the traditional teams. It hasnt felt as if he's belonged in a while. I dont see why he'd want to be around these people and why they'd want him around either. After all these years, he really doesnt have any friends or strong relationships with any of them. Rogue is his only tie and at this point, thats weak at best. He was once close to Storm but she's been busy being queen of Wakanda and before that they havent interacted much since X-treme

Sadly, this is true. The writers have so mishandled Gambit the last decade or so that he really has no ties to... well, anyone in the Marvel Universe. He and Storm were such a great pairing... and Marvel ruined that. Then again, Storm's character has reached levels that I can't even read anymore, so it doesn't matter.

Gambit, if he were going to be used, (and assuming his solo isn't coming back) would fit in on some of the lower-tier teams floating around in the Marvel U. I mean, the guy's a free agent that has a large, dedicated fanbase. So you could move him without creating continuity issues and immediately drag new readers to a smaller book.

But right now mutants are really being held captive under the X-Banner... Sigh.

yeah and if Marvel were smart they would have realized that this was the best time to launch Gambit into a new solo series. With his recent exposure in the Wolverine movie, appearance in MUA2, the cartoon, etc... its something that could have been capitilized. And it shouldnt necesasrily focus on the X-men or his own past, bc I like that idea of him expanding out into the MU kind of like Deadpool has. At this point, keeping Gambit in the X-men is only holding him back especially in an Emma/Scott world where 100+ characters are fighting for panel space

I hope gambit gets his solo series back then all of my favs will have a solo series for beast the S.W.O.R.D series and for rogue X-Men Legacy and for Cable well Cable.

I think if our beloved Cajun was getting his solo back we'd have heard about it by now. :( Just sayin'......

Well you know marvel i never expected my beloved furball beast to leave the x-men and get hos own series.

While it's certainly not in the cards right now... always a possibility in the future. Marvel has to at least remember that he carried a relatively successful solo series in the past.

But yes, the future in that regard looks bleak. The first thing they'd have to do is find a writer that looks at him and sees more than Rogue. Far as I can tell, none of them exist at the moment. Maybe in a few more years, when the 90s readers-turned-creators start to break into the professional writing ranks a bit more.

 Since when has Beast had his own ongoing like Remy has?

Ah, that is great news. He is in my top three. :D

He is getting one.;)
No he's not. He will be one of the lead characters in S.W.O.R.D. but it is not a Beast solo. Gambit actually had several solo series which focused on him, his relationships, past and helped fill in some gaps regarding him we didnt know. Beast isnt getting anything like that
