I have seen enough TV pilot to understand that Gotham is more like a police serial set in a pre-Batman world. It was meant to be entertaining and obviously targeted toward audience outside of the regular comic follower. This is FOX, not HBO. They need to draw in as big an audience as possible. Hence filling the pilot with known Batman villains and vague allusion to future villains.

Here's the thing, the acting is quite good that even the secondary characters and story is quite straightforward. The show was cynical, fairly well-written with good pace. It'll probably get more complicated and I suspected that this season of Gotham will revolve around Carmine Falcone and his mafia empire.

The one weakness I saw right away is the young fellow playing Bruce Wayne talking like an experienced 30 years old adult. They need to dial it back.

Yeah the whole "I'm training myself to conquer fear" thing was a bit heavy handed. 12 year olds dont talk like that but I get what they were going for.

I'm really pulling for this show. I'm hoping the standard ratings dip next week isn't too severe. I even bought the pilot on Amazon this morning to support it.

It was decent. Pilots are usually one of the worst episodes of a tv shows due to having to set up so much, not getting something right, etc.

But this was decent enough that I'll keep watching.

Yeah, when you consider that A.) FOX is just not that successful of a network anymore (check the ratings for every other premiere on FOX thus far... not great) and B.) it's facing down what is inexplicably one of the biggest ratings beasts on TV, and not only that, but they both premiered on the same night.

The numbers are decent, it lit up like crazy on social media (it might even still be trending on Twitter) and FOX is such a DVR crazy network that I'm sure the Live+7 numbers will look damn good.

I wonder if it being prempted by the MLB playoffs and World series will kill any momentum this show has?

I'm not picking on you, specifically, moviefreak, but this is an invalid criticism that I've heard many times today from various internet pundits.

If Bruce Wayne is typically portrayed (TDK trilogy notwithstanding) as a super genius, the world's greatest detective, a master strategist, a human being capable of defeating meta-humans due to the advantage his powerful intelect provides, then is it really that ridiculous to expect a twelve year old version Bruce to speak in a manner more typically expected of an adult?

I have a five year old nephew going on 45. If you sent his voice through a modulator to lower his tone you would swear he was an adult. Also, check out television and radio interviews with child prodigies like Chloe Grace Moretz who was ridiculously sophisticated even at age 11.

Sorry, it's just a pet peeve of mine.

This.

Many writers, even in the comics, often forget to address Bruce's intelligence prior to his origin, unlike Peter Parker and Tony Stark who are both portrayed as geniuses far prior to the accidents that changed their lives. If Bruce got to where we know him to be, he had to have been born a genius or molded into one at an early age by his parents or both. The will by itself isn't enough to become Batman, hence other peak humans in the DCU that have also travelled the world but don't have Bruce's intellect.

Realistically speaking, Bruce should exceed at things like puzzles and word games far faster than any kid his age. I hope the show displays that side of his youth, and it would be covering new ground in the process.

How much does Fox really care about DVR and On Demand viewings? I know CBS definitely looks at those now.

I agree the acting was bit uneven but that expected of a pilot show, but it was still a strong start. I didn't mind the references to future villains even though I had to explain who Nigma was to some non comic book reading friends lol. But I can see this show turning into something really awesome. The look and feel of Gotham is what I wanted for the Nolan movies, they had that in Batman Begins but ditched it for real city locations for the Dark Knight and Rises.

Fox probably cares the most, considering the live ratings for all their shows keep dropping.

I think its a missed opportunity for WB and DC Entertainment to not make their TV shows canon and in line with the movie universe. Take a cure from Marvel with Agents of Shield. For me, I think Arrow is a good show and won't mind that guy to be Green Arrow in the Justice League movie. I love the tone, and look of Gotham in this show and this could be a great way to connect with Ben Affleck's Batman. Just my opinion but most will probably hate that idea.

I really dont think it's a good idea and im thankful they're seperating the two.

If that actor was in Justice League (Arrow), i would be very disappointed, and i think it would make me worry more about the cast, since im already skeptical on Gadot and Mamoa.

I like the look of Gotham as well (tone: i have mixed feelings). It's best to keep it seperate. I think this Alfred is too much of a hardass, unless he softens up as the show progresses. It wouldn't make sense since this Alfred is 50 and Irons will be about 68-70. The math wouldn't add up since Affleck would have to be playing a 32 year old Bruce Wayne just starting out. Which he is not.

Slightly adjusted ratings...

http://tvline.com/2014/09/23/gotham-premiere-ratings/
Gotham (average grade: “B+”) debuted to 8.2 million viewers and a strong 3.2 rating, up from both Bones‘ year-ago performance (7.8 mil/2.3) as Monday’s lead-off hitter and giving Fox its best Mondays-at-8 series launch since Prison Break in 2005.
It should also be noted that Gotham is now tied with Scorpion in the demo. The show that was facing off directly with the Big Bang Theory is now tied with the show that had BBT as it's lead-in. I think that's pretty impressive.

It's not surprising or impressive since it's Batman related and these days anything Batman will reel the viewers in big time. Especially for a debut. We'll see how it does once the last half of the season starts rolling in.

Really? It's not impressive that a new show facing off against two heavy hitters, all of them premiering on the same night, managed to hold it's own? Really? Give it a rest.

Give what a rest? You're acting like a child. If i dont praise every single thing about the show that you really enjoyed, you take a hissy fit. I've already expressed what i liked about the show, and disliked. Im not here to bash for the sake of it, so YOU give your shtick a damn rest. No, i dont think it's impressive because it's Batman related. I expected it to do well for the pilot. We will see if it keeps it up or not, and if it will drop down quite a bit in the ratings once the latter half rolls around. Jesus. You obviously have some issue with different opinions.

I agree... very impressive. The show completely held it's own last night.

I just hope people will stick around to see it (hopefully) get even better.

Watched the Pilot with low expectations, but within the first few minutes I started to enjoy it very much. Wasn't a fan of Selina witnessing the one of the pivotal moments in Bruce's life or Barbara's role, but everything else was solid. Ben Mckenzie plays a great hot heated Jim. And I loved the little bit we got of Riddler and Joker. Also the cinematography was nailed quite nicely, really captured the mood of Gotham without being anyway overkill.
