The Official Green Lantern Review Thread - Part 1

Reading those reviews, what it sounds like is that WB were afraid to make this an all-out space epic/drama and felt the need to keep bringing it back down to Earth, and have the Hector Hammond drama with his father etc. and thus spend less time on Oa.

A sequel could potentially explore Oa more and develop the alien characters introduced there. It still sounds like there is still a lot to do in terms of exploring the GL world. Here it sounds like just an introduction. It sounds like WB were afraid and that is the concern because we may miss out on that now if the box-office underwhelms.

I've considered another worrying implication of Green Lantern potentially failing. Not only could it screw up WB's plans for future DC adaptations, it could also hurt DC's own relaunch of its comic line. This big, bold move they're taking - launching with 52 new #1s in September and starting a big ad campaign to draw in more mainstream readership - could really have benefitted from Green Lantern being a big hit and capturing the public imagination in the DCU beyond Batman.

No they haven't.

Iron Man is the only one of the Studios' films that works front to back. The Incredible Hulk got killed in the editing room (Thanks, Marvel). Iron Man 2 doesn't work as a Tony Stark follow up (Thanks, Marvel). Thor works, but only because of it's great cast.

So basically, they're 2 for 4 right now.

I'd argue that while Incredible Hulk and IM2 may have had their issues...ultimately they're both still good films from a general audience perspective. Ones that could have been better...but they're still good.

I personally enjoy the hell out of both of them. Incredible Hulk has a special place in my heart thanks to Ed Norton and the emotional core of the movie I though was great.

How about someone new?
odds are they will go with someone tested so I offer them they're own.

between 2 blades and 2 batmen films
I really enjoy his good work.

Disagree there.

I don't,
Using the Matrix as the best example, a lot of films loose their luster after the exposition and mystery and wonder present in the first.
some times X2/Spidey/bats, there is great expansion but even still many enjoy those first installments based on the wonder factor. This in my opinion is the basis for sequels being held in lower regard as far as the general audience is concerned.

I can't imagine a property with more expositional wonder factor that the first green lantern had. Plus that cool Cadet vibe it could have exploited. For this I say the green lantern origin had more cinematic potential that it's awesome sequels still have.

*correction, inception is probably at the top of the list for the exposition wonder factor of the first. I'd love to see them try and make a sequel to that lol.

I think Cap is going to be great.

That's the movie I'm most looking forward to this summer...it looks like it has the chance to be as good if not better than Iron Man. So here's hoping!

That's the way I feel too.

I would agree with you on the Incredible Hulk...if Marvel hadn't killed it in the editing room. Honestly, put 20 of those 47 minutes worth of deleted scenes back into that film and the Incredible Hulk would've been the best Marvel Studios' film period.

Iron Man 2 has gotten worse and worse, for me, in only a year and some change. Frankly, as a follow up to Iron Man, it doesn't work. RDJ is entertaining and Scarlett Jo is fine in her role but that's really it. It's too damn goofy to be a follow up to Iron Man.

Holy crap, so I don't want to read the over 20 pages I missed last night, that be somewhere in the area of 600 or more post... But yah, doesn't look good.

Glad that I was indoctrinated by Marvel at a young age and am not overly invested in DC properties or I'd be very sad right now.

As a comicbook fan I want all these movies to do well, but if the lead up to the Avengers seemed this bleak I'd be heartbroken, as it is I rather an epic Nova Corps movie now, and I think Marvel Studios has the rights to it, so there is actually hope.

Hey, maybe GL won't fail lol.

Green Lantern is my favorite superhero, and even if this ship sinks, I'm gonna go down with it. It will be getting my money Friday night.

I don't think he does to be honest

X1
X2
X-men first class
SM1
SM2

Vs
IM
Thor

X1 really wasn't a good film at all. I tried rewatching it...ended up turning it off. My memory of it was a lot better than what it actually is. SM1 is ok. SM2 is great.

Personally, my favorite marvel films are IM1 and IM2, Thor and The Incredible Hulk.

sounds like putting all their eggs in one basket, sort-o-speak...which isn't a smart move.

I prefer the Ang Lee Hulk. Also think the first X-men film is better then IM2 and TIH. But, this will go in circles so...

I feel bad for Lantern fans. It appears that there were too many hands in the cookie jar on this one.

+2 tickets here with the wife.

Hopefully the females and popcorn goers can get this one a nice gross despite the terrible reviews. That'll be the only way we will ever get more.

time for DC to start handing movie making chores to other studios?

I wouldn't say that. With Green Lantern, you need Sinestro to turn bad and the Sinestro Corps to emerge before things get REALLY good. Even when believing the first film could be great, there was always the notion that it would be the sequel that would be the true awe-inspiring space epic.

Exactly.

Hope it happens. :csad:

I Read IGN's Review... Yikes!! They totally bash Hector Hammond. Kind of Sad this Movie is getting bashed by critics :( i guess i will wait for this movie to come out on DVD

As a Green Lantern fan, I can do without others' pity because of the crap load of negative reviews so far. I too will go down defiantly along with the sinking ship if I have no choice.

I think this film will do fine, I mean if Transformers 2 can make bank surely Green Lantern can as well despite it's problems. For me I think I'm going to enjoy the film quite alot, there's loads of times I like movies critics don't. Just remember when you watch this film and if you start to feel disappointed just think to yourself it could have been worse it could have been Jack Black up there instead of Ryan Reynolds.
