The Official Haze Thread

Something which could have given them a fantastic selection of exclusives had they not been dip****s earlier.

Assassin's Creed, Grand Theft Auto IV, Virtua Fighter 5, Devil May Cry 4 + Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy Verus XIII, Tekken 6, Haze, Resistance: Fall of Man, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, Heavenly Sword, Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction, God of War 3, Infamous, etc.

Wow you're right, if Sony weren't such dips**ts they would have had a fantastic selection of exclusives.

GTAIV in particular would've rescued them from 3rd place.

Well rest easy knowing that it was Ken Kuturagi who made all those calls before he was 'promoted' (actually demoted). It's a shame though, I mean I might not have changed anything about the PS3 (even kept the BR because of the HD media war) but with those exclusives Sony would have been in good shape.

Zenien, clear some mailbox room.

Same here. I mean it's not that it doesn't look good/decent. It's just that it's competing against Half Life 2 and Unreal Tournament III on the PS3, and that's pretty stiff competition.

I haven't seen any screenshots or know basically anything about this game, but some people have been complaining about the games' graphics.

Yeah, it looks solid, but UT3 and Orange Box will be offering so much more.

yea the PS3 has so many FPS coming out this fall. I think Haze has potential, but timing might hurt it since Half Life and UT already have an established reputation and following. Plus unlike something like Timeshift, I havent seen something about Haze thats unique or really stands out.

Eerie. Both my predictions (Unreal then Haze) becoming exclusives have come true, especially when I was never really bothered about them. Caught the Haze trailer though, the Play Dead feature looks curious.

well UT3 isnt entirely exclusive, at least not as of now, but they might as well make it one. The 360 is going to have Halo to occupy the FPS fans and the 360 version of UT3 is already going to be inferior to the PS3 one

Them be fighting words man. Be prepared for a prompt response by a 360 owner.

He's right. Why would 360 owners get mad? They don't even need Unreal. Halo is enough to hold me over for a year or so. S***, I still play Halo 1.

yeah thats what Im getting at. I dont see 360 owners being too upset over this as I dont see other FPS faring well this holiday season with Halo 3 out. The competition is defiently there

wow I think Im actually goign to get this game now bc I just found out its being developed by Free Radical who also developed Time Splitters FP which was one of my favorite PS2 FPS game

Through the Haze

First-person shooters are never a rare breed but fans of the popular genre are certainly being spoilt at present, particularly on Xbox 360 with BioShock and the upcoming Halo 3.

At the recent Leipzig Games Convention, Screen Play took a look at some of the other shooters destined to keep trigger fingers very busy over the coming months.

First cab off the rank was Haze, currently a PS3 exclusive by TimeSplitters developer Free Radical and due in November from Ubisoft.

Our demonstration was conducted by industry veteran, Free Radical Director and all-round nice bloke Dave Doak, who Goldeneye fans might remember had a scientist named after him in the Rareware N64 classic.

Haze is set in the near-future, with players controlling a newly enlisted soldier in the Mantel army battling rebels in South America.

Haze's most significant addition is that Mantel troops can guzzle a performance-enhancing pharmaceutical drug called Nectar which turns them into crazed super-soldiers.

In gameplay terms, Nectar makes it easier to spot and hit targets even in dense jungle, you can run faster, take more damage, better sense nearby danger like grenades or foes behind you, and unleash more damage when using melee moves.

But there are also negative impacts when juiced up. In your bloodlust, it is difficult to tell allies from enemies, you stand out, and you can also suffer hallucinations.

Cleverly, the effects of Nectar also play on videogame cliche. You don't see enemies bleed and they disappear soon after being killed - part of Mantel's methods of conditioning their soldiers to distance themselves from the horrors of war.

As the game progresses, slowly your character Shane Carpenter comes to realise that Nectar is making him psychotic and changing (or filtering) his view of the world. He also begins to realise that Mantle are not the heroic defenders of democracy he thought they were, and eventually switches sides to join the rebels.

Free Radical's aim is to produce a game that explores the morality of a soldier's actions in war, including the killing of innocents, and the ambiguity of who is in the right.

But switching sides to the rebels doesn't just provide a thought-provoking new perspective on the story, but also has significant gameplay repercussions.

As a rebel, you must now try to use the adverse effects of Nectar to your advantage. One of the most obvious ways is to shoot a Mantel soldier's "administrator" on their back, which makes them go berserk and often kill their own squad mates.

You can also achieve similar results by fashioning Nectar grenades from the tanks of fallen enemies, hurling them at foes or creating booby traps.

Another handy trick is playing dead on the battlefield, which means you are invisible to Mantel troops, while rebels can also steal Mantel weapons.

Free Radical's proprietary game engine is very high quality, capable of detailed environments like jungles running at a solid clip with no loading pauses. Dave Doak promises a wide range of environments across a dozen different locations.

Firefights tend to be intense, small-ish affairs, often four-on-four.

Free Radical promise four-player "drop-in, drop-out" online co-operative play and two player split-screen co-op for enjoying the action with a mate by your side.

Transport options include four-man all-terrain vehicles complete with Halo-style rear gunners. Nectar will help you avoid mines in the road ahead.

Excitingly, all the game's single-player innovations transfer into the multiplayer realm, ensuring a very different experience according to which side you choose.

Multiplayer games will also include narrative-based missions to complete, and the game will accommodate up to 24-player online battles.

Screen Play will have news and impressions on other exciting shooters like Crysis and Killzone 2 in coming days.
