20.3 miles today (plus about 200 metres not recorded) for 324.2 miles / 521.8 km Sep total.

I had my running vest with 2x500ml of electrolyte drink and even had a full meal from food stalls in the park (@Babillygunn @gohei ) after about 13 and a half miles. Made me feel much better as the run went on and right now it feels like it helped a lot with recovery too. Could have done more but for shoulder blades/trapezius aching a fair bit and having a prior appointment later in the day.

Nice! Seems like it's working well for you. Will be interesting to see what difference it makes to your runs (pace, effort, recovery) in the long term.
 
I’d love to do the running vest thing to bring hydration with me. But my youngest son would disown me! Last spring when we ran our latest half marathon together, we saw a guy running with a vest about 200m ahead with a half mile left to the finish. My son said to me, “Dad, I have to sprint this one out. I’m not letting ‘tube guy’ beat me.” Lol.
 
Great treadmill interval session today.

Total 14.8 miles and an average pace just under 8 minute miles - can't get anywhere near that outdoors to save my life - even my 5k park runs are slower at the moment lol.

All at 15kph (20 min 5k pace): 15x500m, 2x600m, 3x700m.

Got 2 treadmill PBs too while doing the intervals (with faster jogging in the rest periods than usual) which are massively better than anything I can achieve outdoors.

10k - 46.59 (including the warm up)
Half - 1.41.31

Sep runs final total: 339 miles / 545.6 km.

Again had a flask with electrolyte drink to help - needed it with how much salt was coming out in my sweat lol.

It's a no brainer! I'm going to use the running vest with electrolyte drink for all my runs except the runs home from work which are 4.5 miles. Helps a lot during the run and helps a ton during recovery too after having not put myself in too much of a nutritional deficit. Also today was a huge performance upgrade and a nice capper to a big mileage month, hopefully the first of many.

Haha, I didn't realise there was lameness to using these. :funny: Not that I care, it's too much of a benefit and helps stay healthy during and after the runs and that's what matters. I am a zero ego runner these days (the age helps too lol) - don't care how I look or who overtakes me - I'm on a personal mission to achieve personal targets and it's all been very fulfilling and my health has improved a lot. Just got to stay injury-free and manage all the little niggles and hopefully many months/years of enjoying it ahead!

My son wants to wear shorts and a polo to school when it is 15 degrees outside. So I wouldn’t worry about his opinions of what lengths one must go to avoid looking lame!

Start of a new month! Today's run didn't quite go to plan after eating a bunch of fruit before starting thinking it would help. 10.3 miles in and thought I was done feeling I didn't have much left, and ended the workout on my watch and started walking back (in the rain). A bit later got some energy back and ran the rest of the 2.5 miles home. I'd planned to do 16 miles but at least that last 2.5 miles takes it a bit closer to the target.

I should qualify re the half marathon time that it includes a break after the hour mark to reset the machine and I took a big drink before I restarted - plus I think had an email to check at one point so also took a minute break somewhere. So it's not stirictly comparable to a fully continuous half, but that 10k time is super fast for me (way ahead of outdoor PB) and managed that without breaks and including starting slow for the warm up. Makes me think maybe I'd be faster in races if I just did intervals during them lol, although I'd look a right idiot continuously overtaking people super fast and then getting overtaken again while going super slow. :D. I'll have to see next time if I can run a fast steady state 10k as that should theoretically be easier for most people than running a fast time going fast and slow alternately.
 
Did 4,000 steps around my neighbourhood today, ran so fast that I tired out on the way back home, and my friend/roommate had to wheel me while I was sitting on my walker about 300 steps to our house. That thing is not good for long distances.

Still, that was the most steps I have ever done. The most I can do is 3,000-3,3500 usually.

Well done! Did you run the first bit and then have to use a wheelchair for the last bit? Great to get a new best! Hopefully you can reach that level again.

Those times are amazing my friend.

Your 10k time is just a few minutes slower than what I ran 30 years ago when I ran varsity cross country. I couldn’t imagine breaking 50 minutes right now. Heck, I’d be thrilled if I could break 60 these days. And that half marathon time is on track for my PR as a teenager as well. Those days are so long behind me I cannot even imagine them. But you’re doing it into middle age which is outstanding. Congratulations!

My outdoor 10k PB time is way behind that at 51.56 from 3 years ago and I guess I haven’t tried a 10k since but doubt I would do any better than that right now. Also half marathon outdoors I’ve only done 2 hrs 7 mins. Again haven’t since tried to run one for speed so don’t know what I’m capable of now. Just to give a reality check to the treadmill numbers which included a bit of rest for the half. On the plus side the 10k included a slow warm up for the first k so maybe that time is feasible outdoors eventually.

It seems easier mentally for me to just do it during intervals when not actually trying for a time and on a treadmill than outdoors, over trying to maintain a harsh steady pace the whole way. Maybe that will come as I improve and hopefully all this mileage makes my easier runs become faster over time. Remember, even my 5k outdoors is slower at this moment lol, although I think that in particular will improve fast over the next few weeks and months.

Thanks for the inspiration with your own interval sessions too. I love them now and they are a weekly staple on Mondays. In my first session I way surpassed what I thought I might be capable of and each week has also improved since. Given the longer intervals above at 15kph, I think I’ll able to do a 20 min 5k on treadmill eventually, even if the outdoor time is a few minutes behind that. 20 min outdoor 5k by 50 is still the long term target. :cwink:

I’m knocking on the 50 door (really I have one foot in it) and 20 minute 5k days are about 20 years behind me. I did one at 26 minutes during the pandemic, but all of that was before my meniscus problems. 2019 was also when I did a 2:08 half marathon. That was my fastest that I ran it in my 40’s. But again, I know those days are behind me too.

My biggest hurdle right now is recovery. I don’t have time to sleep. My schedule is unruly and I’m exhausted all of the time. My two boys are very close with me, but their teenage lives take up a lot of time and energy. But I also have a lot of stress as my oldest is looking at colleges for next year and I’m really grieving that he will be going away. Work is picking up and I’m torn because I am having to choose not to run on certain days because I know that I cannot be in recovery the next day because I need to be sharp and not exhausted.

I just need more and better sleep.

I walked most of the way there and back. Just simply sat on my walker seat.

I was pretty impressed, and hope I can reach 5,000 eventually.

Nice, my last couple have been around 26 mins, the last one on a very hilly course so I think I can break through that quite soon. The treadmill 46.59 10k definitely suggests that too - that's like doing 2 5ks in a row faster than my outdoor 5k PB!

Such a shame that that meniscus issue has gone on so long and limited what you could do. Any way that can ever be fully healed? Rehab doesn't help much?

Good to know on the half. Feels like I could get an outdoor PB soon but there isn't really anywhere in my training to try that, unless it just happens as part of a longer run, and on those I am usually trying to go low heart rate. The only times I definitely try and run fast are the Sat park run 5k, the Monday intervals and hopefully a tempo session I will start doing on Weds/Thurs depending how recovered I am from the intervals. None of that is likely to lead to any 10k or HM testing outside of the interval session (by default).

Oh, I'm really sorry to hear on sleep, schedule, stress and sadness about your boy going away. :csad: I hope some of those can improve - I wouldn't get anywhere without sleep. Best of luck for your situation mate. :up:

It wrecked the rest of my workout though and had to stop a few km later, but well worth it in this case.

I love doing pace on treadmills where you can control it exactly and plan what you need to achieve a specific time with the live rolling maths in the head. I know I can get under 20 mins on the treadmill one day now. Just got to find a way of pushing myself outdoors where I’m way too conservative till the end (and often have enough left in the tank to do a half marathon after).

4.7 miles total. Oct runs lagging @ 17.5 miles / 28.2 km (but I’ll definitely take it for the speed improvements!).

I have court tomorrow and was going to skip runs till I get through it since I’ve been so tired lately.
But maybe I might hit a good run tonight.

I did a new park run which has 2 laps but a killer hill near the end of each lap. I was going faster than usual until I met that hill and then people started overtaking me and it took me a while to recover. Also on the second lap it killed the prospect of a fast finish. Outdoor 5k still improving and down to 25.20 on a challenging course (4 mins slower than my treadmill time). I think I'll be in the 24s when I do a flat course next, as long as my toe injury calms down.

Great day though and about 750 people at this particular run so it was a lively one. Also ran 10k home after stopping for a coffee with a work colleague.

20x500m, all @ 16kph except 1 @ 17 kph

Very happy to be able to do them at 16 kph after 15 last week but probably sticking at 16 now for a while to consolidate.

Oh well done! Didn't take you long at all to reach your target. Hope you can do these kinds of numbers more often. :up:
 
13.4 miles on the way in to work today. Always hard the day after intervals!

Takes Oct total to 56.5 miles / 90.9 km. I want to catch up to the 10 mile a day mark asap.
