The Official Hype Fitness Thread 6.0 - Part 8

I had only had one day of running since the illness but managed 16.5 and 4.6 miles on that day (Tuesday).

On Saturday I did 6.8 miles jogging to and from a trail parkrun which I took very easy in case of illness but it went fine (about 26 mins - pushed a bit harder in the final mile after feeling ok).

Also didn't do too much as had a running event in a faraway park planned for the Sunday. I turned up late after getting lost and missed the half marathon start time but they allowed me to instead take part in the 10k. I've never run a race-10k before and was very happy with the time (49.48) given that is 2 fast-for-me 5ks back to back. Total running getting there and getting back between trains was 14.4 miles for the day.
 
I got in just under 2.2 miles today. I felt good for the first mile then hit a wall with the second. I used the fact that I still have work to do as an excuse for bailing out early on the run. But in reality, I’m still trying to build my endurance back up.

But it is so good to get out there again!
Really glad to hear you are getting out there again regularly, and managing the runs as you see fit day by day. This is the way to do it. I wish you the best luck in how it progresses and as you know, be super-sensible and always think long term with this.

Every time you manage to do a run of any length and survive to fight another day with no excessive ill effects, it's a huge success. That's more important than getting too ambitious. The more you do this other parts of your body and system will start getting stronger and more resilient while you carefully manage the parts that are going to be more of a challenge.

That's a great time, considering you had a period of illness leading up to it.
 
16.5 and 4.6 mile runs today. Could be a big week after that longer than usual Monday run (I’m supposed to do intervals on Mondays usually, but not after the Sunday event).

Thanks. For me it’s a great time regardless of anything! I always had a big mental block with 10k compared to 5k and half-marathon. It’s like you’re still supposed to go fast like a 5k, but for a much longer time! At least I chill out for a bit on half marathons.

Seriously, your times now are not that far off from where I was 33 years ago when I was a cross country runner! That’s really remarkable and you should be really proud as you’ve put in some serious work to get those times down. I’m really amazed.

I got in a little over 3.75 miles yesterday. Everything still feels stiff and heavy when I run, but I’m really enjoying it and I’m just happy to be able to run again.
 
Very similar runs to round off a very high mileage Mon - Thurs ahead of having Friday off. 16.5 and 4.6 miles on Weds & 16.4 and 4.6 miles on Thurs. Up to 84.3 miles for the week with the weekend to come! All those were super-slow runs recovering from the race on Sunday though.

Really glad you're able to get out there. Enjoy every bit that you can. My recent illness was a strong reminder how amazing it is to have health and not be bedbound incapable of doing anything (even if for a very short time). We won't be able to do this forever so should enjoy every time we are able to get out there and do anything.

That's awesome to know. I know you were very fast as a youngster so wasn't expecting to be anywhere near those times.

I remember that 2.5 mile run that started it all where I felt like I was absolutely dying just trying to complete it, and now I realise how easily I cruise those kinds of distances at the begining of 16-21 mile runs, even after having been beaten up by big workouts the day before. I love how the body can adapt so much long term with consistent training. Getting PBs isn't my main goal but a nice additioanl bonus if they come. I will enter a lot of races (just bought an annual membership meaning I can turn up to a whole bunch this year) for the experience, love running with a ton of other people. in different locations. My main focus is to be able to do this as long as possible so all my strategies are long term and attempting to be sustainable with no rush while minimising injury risk.
 
So, before the skies opened up here, I got in a 2.2 mile run this morning. I tried to step up my pace a bit more as I’ve been back at it for 2 weeks and I figured that I can go a little better than my typical jog that I’ve been doing post injury. I went at it at about a 10 minute mile pace, which I’m happy with given that I’m still getting over the two meniscus tears and the arthritic tendonitis.

Illnesses are awful. Take the time to rest up fully.
 
I went just shy of 2.5 miles last night. My knee was crazy sore. We have had a lot of rain the past few days and it has been aching a lot.
 
On Saturday I did a slower 5k parkrun of just over 25 minutes, wasn't quite feeling it from when I woke up. Then took Sunday and Monday off. Today did 17.05 miles to work and 4.6 miles on the way back.

I hope its over soon. I was very ill recently but after taking a long time off to recover even after getting better, it didn't take all that long to get back in the swing of things and get back close to where I was. I hope it's the same for you.

For the meniscus tears it is supposed to subside over time. But there’s arthritis will probably have flare ups here and there for my lifetime. But there’s arthritis doctor said that it can be managed with anti-inflammatories and injections. He also said that running actually releases fluids in the knee that lubricate the joint and helps over time. But the cold adage about “feeling the weather” and arthritic pain increasing with rain and barometric pressure change is a real thing for some people. And I am apparently one of those people.

Was this arthritis inevitable with your genetics and running history or could anything have been done about it?

Also how did you tear your meniscus? On a one off event or grinding down over time? I want to make sure I don’t do that as with the longer runs I did feel some slight repetitive knee wear so will keep an eye on that.

That fluid is something I feel circulating when anything is a bit stiff or painful and it helps a lot after having jogged the first mile or 2. Synovial fluid I think is the one I’m referring to, not sure if that’s the same as your doc was talking about.

Yes. It is Synovial fluid. I just didn’t know how to spell it. :)

My doctor tells me that most of my soft tissue injuries are the product of repeated use fueled by really bad genetics. He did say that of all my activities, the tear most likely would have been exacerbated by playing basketball as the jumping probably is harder on the meniscus than running. The fall that I had last November was probably caused by the knee going weak due to the meniscus tears. He didn’t think that the tears were because of traumatic injury. Still, he says that even with arthritis and potential of additional wear and tear on the knee, running is still far more preferable to being sedentary. So he said “if you enjoy running, then run.” But he said that I have to realize that genetically, I’m probably more predisposed to soft tissue injury, especially based on my history. So I have to go into activities realizing that and planning on more recovery as I get older.

Apparently the effect of barometric pressure on arthritis is somewhat disputed, but my doctor said, “there’s enough people out there that have experienced increased stiffness and pain accompanying weather changes, that the correlation shouldn’t be ignored, even if it’s not always quantifiable or definitively clinically proven.”

Hmm, I wonder what my genetics are like then as obviously in my 40s I am pushing it on the repetitive long distance - and don't have the long running history which might have shown me which areas might deteriorate long term yet. Glad to hear him say that about running, and makes sense on basketball which must be a high stress event with all the high jumps. I used to do long jump and triple jump in athletics at school and they felt like they were putting a lot of impact on the joints.

I hope you are able to manage this well incorporating the receovery needed while still being able to enjoy an exercise you are passionate about and which can otherwise help keep you healthy into older age. Also I want you talking about it here for years so I can feel like I've got a long term running buddy for support. 😂

5.7 miles with a few strides towards the end on the way to work today. Friday is usually my day off from running but I did less yesterday and have to work in the office today (only usually work a handful of Fridays in the office in the whole year). Felt nice to get a few bursts of pace within a casual run.

March runs: 195 miles / 313.8 km Very good considering only 1 day of running in the first 7 days. High hopes for a new monthly mileage record in April or May before it starts getting too hot again!

I check barometric pressure from a weather app I have. I’m trying to track it vs pain that I might be experiencing.


2.25 miles today. It felt good for the first two miles, but I walked the last quarter mile.
 
I usually have a rest day Friday but had to go to the office so ran the direct (short) route there and back. 5.7 miles on the way in and 4.5 miles on the way back.

On Sat I did a trail 5k parkrun in 24.23, new best on that course. Altogether close to 7 miles on the day.
