Why exactly did Harry call himself Venom in that game? I don't think we ever got an actual explanation
I dont think it honestly matters. I can't remember off hand if it was explained or not, but I also don't think it needs to be overtly thought out either.

I disagree.

In SM 2, Harry doesn't wanna ruin Peter's life or sadistically torment him the way Venom usually wants to do in most other media. He want's to "heal the world". It doesn't really make any sense for why he'd choose "Venom" as his name.

Actually, many healing remedies and medicines we use are made from venom of various animals. Particularly Spiders and snakes. So it's still appropriate

Venom by it's definition is not what you think of first when it comes to medicine, It's usually the exact opposite. That was also never mentioned in the games story.

It really feels like the writers of the game only called him that because that's what his name is in the comics.

It would be for a scientist. Which Peter and Harry both are. Or an exotic snake handler who raises dangerous animals to sell to venom labs. Maybe that was something in the story and the scene got cut, I don't know. But regardless, it still appropriate for his motivations

Too bad they didn't have a scene like this

Harry: "We are Venom"

Peter" But i thought you wanted to heal the world?"

Harry: "We do"

Peter: "So why are you naming yourself after poison?"

Harry: "Lots of cultures use Venom for medicinal purposes"

Peter: "It's still not exactly the first thing one thinks of when it comes to medicine"

Harry: "Quiet you"

You're overthinking it.

Maybe they did and it got cut for whatever reason. I am not involved in the behind the scenes on the game. But regardless, it didn't need it. Game was perfectly fine without this scene. I honestly didn't even think of the fact the name never got explained until this conversation. Most people probably didn't either. Cause the game was great

It didn't feel strange to you that he called himself Venom for no real reason? Most versions of the character name themselves as such because of they're vendettas towards Spider-Man ("Were poison to both Peter Parker and Spider-Man. We're Venom") In the game, it really felt like the only reason they called him that was because that's his name in the source material.

I'm not saying it's a fatal flaw but it's a pretty noticeable oversight.

No I honestly didn't notice it. Again, I don't think in the end it actually matters or not. It isn't like suddenly it's a bad game cause a scene didn't take place where he explains his name. Doesn't fundamentally change the storyline or anything. So I file this under nitpick territory

I guess it sticks out more to me because of the other flaws in the games story (like the whole Symbiote invasion plot line)

In the end, this is a Raimi Spider-Man thread, so not getting too far into the weeds, but that's something where your mileage may vary. So agree to disagree there

Some of this seems a bit overly convoluted, but there’s some interesting ideas for SM3 with Harry/Venom and Vulture.

I think I'd rather just save Venom for Spider-Man 4 and let 3 end with Peter either starting to get wary of the symbiote or shedding it.

I read this last two pages and for some reason I misinterpreted Spider-Man 3 as amazing Spider-Man 3 and then Insomniac Spider-Man 3.

Does anybody else just randomly think back 20 years ago when these films were coming out, and realize how much time has passed? It's both comforting and sad at the same time. It was such a different time in both this genre and film as a whole.

For me it's 95% sad lol

I don't think it makes me sad, but it makes me miss the old times when I realized so much time has passed. Its kinda weird, I feel like since 2003 (when x2 came out), I've always been waiting for the next Marvel movie and to see a lot of these Marvel movies being over 10 to 20 years old is wild. A lot of these Marvel movies also remind me of the different points of my life.

There was a point around 2016 or 2017 where, despite being a big fan of the MCU, I felt like that spark of excitement for me was starting to fade which I think was due to the amount of MCU movies, and just how it felt like a machine pushing out movies. Obviously, some were amazing, but seeing the amount of hype for some that were just middle of the road at best ended up making me get a bit burnt out. I was yearning for the old days when they were more director driven, and without the weight of a larger universe at play. At the same time, I loved the MCU and own several of the movies too, But there was a magic to the pre-MCU days that I think some people still take for granted a bit. In a span of just a few years, we got the first 2 X-Men films, the Raimi trilogy, and TDK trilogy. The later two trilogies I'd take over any comic book film of the last 12 years. It's also so surreal to see new generations come in an evaluate these movies. Most of them grew up with the MCU, which is just crazy to think about. Like i personally can't imagine not knowing what a pre-MCU world looks like, but I guess that's one of the big things about new generations. It's all new perspectives.

When No Way Home was coming out, and the rumors of Tobey and the cast returning, I honestly thought it was a dream come true. I'm so grateful Disney made that film happen so I could see my "friends" one more time.

The golden era of comic book movies was back then. Raimi Spider-Man movies, the TDK movies, X-Men 2, Iron Man, The Avengers etc.

The Arkham games came out back then too. We didn't know how good we had it.

Yup. And the late 2000s felt like Bat mania. Hot off TDK, we got the Arkham games, as you said. It really was peak comic book heaven. I'm not sure if we'll ever get that again.

The one thing I miss the most from back then is the viral marketing campaign for TDK. It became year long countdown event to the movie that had never been done or replicated since. The Hype was blowing up with traffic over people trying to get those dang cakes lol.

Yeah to this day I have never seen a marketing campaign for a movie as massive as TDK's. Not just online but out there in the real world too. Crowds of people were going through the streets dressed as Joker, carrying I believe in Harvey Dent banners etc. It was crazy.

That movie was a juggernaut in every sense of the word. I don't think we'll ever see that kind of hype for a CBM again. Once in a lifetime experience.
