Alright, the Iron Man franchise seems to be taking a short hiatus for a while, but as one of the MCU's most lucrative franchises it's highly doubtful they'll wait all that long. Anyway, we'll probably have to wait till after Avengers 3.

By then the character will probably be recast, so where should the franchise go next? Some possibilities are:

Armor Wars is a possibility, not only is it one of the character's most iconic storyline, but some elements have even been featured in Iron Man 2.

Another one of Iron Man's most iconic storylines, Shane Black wanted to use it in Iron Man 3, but Marvel didn't allow him, with another actor i think it's the perfect oportunity to start evolving the character and maturing him, the present trilogy hasn't made that much since the character barelly learns from his errors, besides that, the next actor can't just repeat what RDJ did, a more serious take on the character while still keeping the charm and witt from before sounds like the best step forward.

And finally, they could go with the imortal version of the Mandarin. The latest Marvel short seems to point out that there is another real Mandarin, probably an imortal warlord, so in the next film they could go with this version, maybe he could even revive Fin Fang Foom as some ancient creature.

So, thoughts? Ideas? What is the best story for Iron Man 4? How different should the next take be?

Another villain possibility is to introduce Justin Hammer's father

Possibly as more serious and ruthless than his son. Since the first trilogy was about Tony facing people that he and his family helped create, then the next films should be about more external threats that Tony must suit up in order to face.

Well, he would be partially responsible for Armor wars if that storyline was used, but this time the villain could start off as not so personal to Tony.

Iron 4 basically being a remake of Iron Man 3, but with the real Mandarin this time!

Seems like one of their options, i'm not a big fan of this new twist, but since it was already introduced, then they better use it. Otherwise, i would have liked to see Killian continue as a villain

Robert Downey, Jr. Now Open To Doing "Iron Man 4"

It's starting to look like we might have Robert Downey, Jr. in "Iron Man" movies for some time to come.
The actor, without question the linchpin and most important and popular character in the ever-expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe, has appeared in three solo "Iron Man" films and one "Avengers" film to date.

Through 2018, Downey has only signed up for two more "Avengers" film, leading many to conclude that he was done with solo films starring the character.

However, he was quoted by Fansshare as saying that although he has hinted in the past that he might be ready to stop portraying Tony Stark in solo films, he has had a change of heart and that an "Iron man 4" is a distinct possibility.

He says he would be willing to continue in the role as long as the script was good enough.
He explained, "I would really hate for someone else to think they could step into my shoes. I know things are looking like that they could go on for a long while. As usual in my book, it's all about quality control and delivering a product that you can have this kind of reaction to. If they keep doing that, maybe I'll keep showing up."

There will eventually come a time when Marvel will have to replace Robert Downey Jr but it looks like we could still have him for a few more years yet. What do all of you think?

Well it would be nice if he faces the real Mandarin in some way as the film's ultimate villain, even if he faces another lower villain first.

Spymaster should infiltrate his circle of friends; meaning masquerading as Pepper, Happy, or Rhodey.

p.s. Terrence Stamp should play Justin Hammer senior.

It's funny, I read "Spymaster" as "Sylvester" and I was like, "Stallone?...hmmm."

"Eh...Tony howz it gooiinnng iz me, Pepper, ya' know?"

If he weren't Magneto, Ian McKellan could've worked.

Another possibility is Jesper Christensen (Mr White in Casino Royale). I once saw a picture of him with white hair (I can't find it on the internet now) which he had for a role (don't know which one) and it made him look much older. He looked very like Justin Hammer in it.

What year do you think IM4 will come out?

I think 2017 - 2019.
That sounds right to me. Give Downey a few years break, and then bring him back in Phase 4 for a final showdown with the real Mandarin, who has orchestrated everything in the first 4 movies.

Iron Man 4 is inevitable at some point. It just probably just won't have Downey in it.

After the success they've had this year Marvel are getting to a point where they probably won't even need RDJ after Avengers 3.

Eh, for some reason the movie "#4" always take a lot of time/waiting than usual well except for Harry Potter/Twilight/Hunger Games.

I personally want to see an Iron Man 4 film because I want to see another villain from Iron Man's rogue gallery.

I agree with you, do not get me wrong, I am beyond thankful to have gotten 3 great Iron Man films, and if they did not do anymore than I would be ok with that, however, if a 4th film were to be made, than count me first in line.
With so many of shellheads rogues yet to be brought to the big screen, like Madam Masque, Spymaster, Ghost, Titanium Man, Crimson Dynamo, Living Laser & Firebrand, I would be thrilled to see those translate to a film.

The Crimson Dynamo was already brought to the big screen. The movie version of Whiplash was really just the Crimson Dynamo with Whiplash's name.

I believe according to the special features from Iron Man 1, that they were going to call Iron Monger Crimson Dynamo.

I wouldn't watch it without RDJ. I'm sorry, but I feel that he portrays the character best. They would need to get someone real good to be on par with him, I think. There might well be an Iron Man 4 or a total reboot of the franchise, with the way Fantastic Four are going, but it won't be with RDJ. He wants to do his own movies and take a shot at directing. He has loads of other projects besides jumping from Sherlock to Tony and back again. As much as I'd love him to be THE Tony Stark, THE one and only, they will reboot it when the next installment comes to light.

A lot of guys make their own Iron Man costumes but for me, I'd just buy mine.
Take for instance this Iron Man Costume that can be purchased online.
I expect to win the Halloween party with it.

Other than that I'll be very sad to see RDJ but it's really just a case of age these days unfortunately. If an actor gets too old, they just get replaced. It's an inevitable end inclusive of Wolverine.
However I'm more excited for a Black Widow movie. Had enough of Iron Man for now lol.
