O.K. the boards have been alittle boring the last day or so, since the casting anouncement didn't happen...So I thought I'd start a new thread.
Not to mention the fact that MM is the most under-exposed member of the team and the coolest in my opinion. I thought it was about time he got some attention.

So here is a place to discuss every one's big green oreo lover. Costume suggestions, casting news(yeah right)/suggestions, how big a role he SHOULD play in the film, favorite comic moments (I'd be happy to hear those, because in all the JLA books I've read he's always a background character).

First of all I'd like to say that George Miller scored big points with me when he had the script re-written to include Jonn. I was very disapointed when initial reports stated he wouldn't be in the film.

Costume wise, as much as I like his classic comic look people complain about his nakedness which isn't really a problem for me. I guess I'm used to aliens being naked in films, and MM shows some modesty by at least wearing the trunks. But the current comic look works too, except I don't like the pointy head. His face on JLU was perfect, cuz I don't like the human bald guy-just green look either. On JLU he looked alien but not cheesy.

I think he should definately be cgi, and I would go with Carl Lumbly(JLU) for the voice.

What I'm most excited about in JLA are MM's action scenes. In my opinion he's the most powerful member of the team, (not the strongest-that'd be superman, and not the most dangerous-that'd be Batman) but the most powerful all around. That along with the fact that he is an unknown to the general public makes me think he has the potential to be a big breakout character for DC if he's used to his potential in the film. He has so many outragously cool powers, I can't wait to see him tearing through Omacs like they're nothing.

The Manhunter needs to be in JUSTICE LEAGUE. I'd prefer not to see him depicted as a physical powerhouse though. I don't mind him being strong, but nothing close to Superman. I'd rather see his emotional angle explored, I.E what the extent of his powers does to him, etc.

Costumewise, I'd like to see the basic elements of J'onn's costume kept, the cloak, the "X", etc. I can see him wearing some kind of Martian armor and cloak that morphs to become his regular clothing along with him.

J'onn doesn't need to play a huge role in the film, but it'd be nice to see him play a key one. Something that leads right into saving the day. He should look very alien, even in human form, and his look and perceived inhumanity should be a part of his arc. I see J'onn's voice as very alien, not human sounding at all, something eerie and compassionate/intense...with a lot of resonance.

...^^^ Isn't the Martian Manhunter as strong as Superman though?

What I've heard, it seems weird that MM doesn't fight Superman, and it's just the other main two characters(Batman and Wonder Woman).

He's not quite as strong as Superman, at least in terms of punching and lifting. He's not far behind though.

What's the point of him being as strong? That's not the interesting aspect of his character. There are TONS of superstrong metahuman characters. J'onn's most interesting element is his alien nature, but his great compassion for his adopted world despite their occasional misunderstanding of him.

i'd like him to be more under-powered, with a focus on his telepathy, shape-shifting, and phasing powers.

As a huge fan of J'onny, I'm still on the fence regarding if I even want him in the film. I'd love to see him in full life, and it really wouldn't be the JLA without him, but I've also seen other people's favorites butchered in translation from page to screen.

also, i want him to have him a more alien look.

i think Lawrence Fishburn can be both the voice and the body for MM. i always thought that if there was one superhero role Fishburn was born to play, this would be it (of course the alter ego of John Jones is a different matter entirely).

I'd have to disagree with under-powering him. In Justice League cartoon he was severly underp-powered in the first couple of seasons. He was largely embarrassing in fights where he could be knocked out by anything as strong as a kick to the shins. But thankfully, that was rectified in JLU. In the comics too, he's shown to be quite powerful and I think he should stay this way. With regards with all his other powers, and especially the phasing, I would love to see this.

MM is such an interesting character. I really hope that Miller doesn't underuse such a central figure in the creation of the JL. Miller has already won me over by re-writing him back into the script, so there is hope for the cahracter.

I too would love Lumbly to voice him. Fishburne would have been interesting, but seeing as he's already voiced Silver Surfer, I don't think it would work.

I just hope they don't skimp on J'onns abilities. He's definitely not afraid to use telepathy, shape shifting, phasing and his incredible strength all in one confrontation- I'd hate to see him standing around talking for the whole film, and then just do one cool thing somewhere durning the big climax near the end. He's too important in the JL for that.

That's because the writers sucked at using him appropriately for the most part. Not because he was underpowered. Remember, Superman got the crap kicked out of him constantly, too.

As long as they don't give him Heat Vision. It makes NO sense for a character weakened by flame to have Heat Vision.

How about we give some other actors a chance besides Lumbly, who frankly just isn't an impressive voice actor at ALL (granted, his dialogue was usually terrible), and Fishburne, who will soon be voicing damn near everything?

Maybe someone who isn't so obviously, how do I put this, an African American with a deep voice used to pinhole J'onn to that style? Perhaps an interesting voice, period, that can be altered to sound like an eerie alien, and not a human being doing a voiceover?

J'onn is DEFINITELY underappreciated, that's without a doubt. I think he should be shown as something of a badass in the movie, simply because he's one of the only big JLAers who will never get a movie, plus of course he's the soul of the JLA. I definitely want a big twist as he morphs into our villain's deputy or some such thing but isn't revealed until the very end. And yes, thank you Geoff Johns, I want the line:

"I am my planet's sole survivor-"
*Kicks requisite amount of ass*
"There is a reason for that"

What's that quote from? I wanna read that issue.

True, but sometimes it's just fun watching him beat people senseless.

I'm a big MM fan too.

What about Benjamin Bratt as J'onn? He can play understated very well and can have a certain sad look about him that JJ requires.

IMO MM will be the hardest to make for a live action movie.

all of this are interesting casting choices. but you can use the computer for the MM's sound.
i want an actor that knows how to act and move. the make up departmen will make sure that he will look good. lets nto forget that the make up department cna make you look like anything.

it doesnt need to be a big black guy.
and lets not forget that things can chagne. The Thing was supposed to be CGI. but they changed their mind. silver surfer was supposed to be an actor in the suit. they wanted a stylized silver surfer. they changed their mind and they used a lot of CGI SS for a realistic alien that refelct the enviorment around himself.

How about Peter Cullen, AKA: voice of Optimus Prime, for the Martian Manhunter?

That's cool and all, but I much prefer seeing him rip people's minds to pieces.

I hope that they make J'onn like they did in JL/JLU. That is awesome stuff. Would like to see him and Superman beat up on someone.
